For people who like anime based on music,
NC's scene with rach's 2nd piano concerto is a good enough reason to watch it, good recommendation. Piano no Mori, it's only an OVA and is shorter than the manga. Sakamichi no Apollon for jazz, too bad it had BL vibes here and there.
For people who like anime based on VNs
(inexact quote but there are good animes based on VNs that have no hentai.) Steins;Gate >:? Umineko is supposedly well-liked by some. I tried the sound novel but it was eugh, so I stayed away from the anime. Ef tales, but I didn't like it. For ones that have eroge, just check bakabt. More than half of anime based on VN eroges are hentai. There are a lot of good plot-VNs (has eroge in most cases) but that's off-topic. I'll still bring up names for those possibly interested in good reading material, the OSTs are generally very good as well. Some of those impossible to anime-ize due to how huge they are would be Aoishiro, YU-NO. Ever17 or Kara no Shoujo for example. The amount of branches and the size of the story would make it too difficult, IMO how KEY did it with Clannad (OVAs for diff routes) isn't great, and for those VNs it wouldn't even work. Some like Sharin no Kuni, Saya no Uta, G-Senjou no Maou, Tokyo Alice, Brass Restoration, or Family Project (haven't finished this one though, so not sure yet) could get an anime even without the eroge since the plot is where it's at and they aren't as complex construction-wise. Animating VNs is more of a challenge than making an anime out of a manga obviously. Just look at what they did with Muv-Luv which is a horror VN. They kept some horror in it, but it's nothing like the VN ;A; Was looking forward to it and got horribly disappointed after some episodes, as it started out pretty interestingly. Same goes for Fate/Stay Night. The anime mixed elements from the three routes and it ended up bad compared to the VN itself, even if there's an OVA for rin's route (which I didn't watch, I would just re-read the VN). True Tears anime has a VN, but Salem checked and it's different from the VN, so I'm putting it in another category.
For people who like psychotic-themed anime,
Aoi Bungaku Series stories 1, 2, 5 and 6. Paranoia Agent Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku (dat seinen) Jin-Roh Akira NHK (sorry bogikavo but the anime is bad compared to the manga) (NGE EoE just for the mindfuck and due not understanding wth you just saw, but everyone here knows that already) Get to Eva rebuilds instead.
For people who like slice of life anime,
True Tears (bawww) Minami-ke Bamboo Blade (although more comedy), etc, lots in this genre. Nichijou (not really slice of life, but great comedy) Mayo Chiki! though harem/comedy as well
For people who like high graphics anime,
Kara no Kyoukai OVAs Eve no Jikan Wonderful Days / Sky Blue (korean anime) Evangelion Rebuild (great visuals, still has asuka, and less angsty shinji, good formula. Supposedly #3 is mindfuck from start to end, can't wait for BR release). Instead of watching Rahxephon, I'd rec the eva rebuild movies |: That anime is almost as bad as NGE pace-wise and angsty-prot-wise, so fuck it. 5cms/s director's latest anime, I didn't bother watching it though, but seems good visually. Aoi Bungaku Series stories 2 to 4 (the rest are more 'trippy/artsy' 2 (iirc) of the One Piece movies are incredible visually, forgot which though. I believe OP Z will be quite promising as well since the anime is already building it up (not following the manga after Fisherman arc). Fate/Zero For artsy(/trippy) animes: 1 of the OP movies' 2nd half had one of the best artsy visuals for an area, but like I mentioned before I don't remember which. Mononoke Count of Monte Cristo/Gankutsuou Aoi Bungaku Series stories 1, 5 and 6 Paprika/Millennium Actress Jigoku Shoujo Mushishi at times (dem babies under the house is prob one of the most surreal horror scenes in anime imo, different from horror like Jin-Roh's wolves scene) Trapeze SE: Lain at times Petshop of Horrors Bakemonogatari at times (Nise was too much fanservice, dropped it even if visuals were good). Could add Setzubou Sensei as well. Yojou-han Shinwa Taikei Cencoroll ? Pandora Hearts only up to Chesire Cat's arc. The end is horrible. Mawaru Penguindrum, watched part of it when high, then I realized it was crap. Good visuals though. Shinsekai Yori at times, but it's not too good plot-wise although interesting when well-done. Doubt the 2nd half will be particularly good/worth it.
For people who are finding anime that are based on game,
Brave Story gets that 'anime takes place in a game' feel, but it's not actually based on one. Ennea said
No I never really watched gintama, the first 5 episodes bored the shit out of me. Never touched it since then. I like seitokai no ichizon as non-sense humor if we're still at that.
Gintama is quite good, but it's just too long. Had good parts but eh too long. It's too long, god damnit. Seitokai no Ichizon is good, waiting for S2 to finish before I watch it. For non-sensical, Seto no hanayome (as mentioned by we11) including baka to test (+ it has hideyoshi) Pani Poni Dash Detroit Metal City FLCL There are too many for this genre. For F/SN/Tsukihime/etc fans, Carnival Phantasm. The classics are mainly brought up already. like Baccano (Mash mentioned), Monster/CB/SC/GITS (kara mentioned), CB/Mushishi (ennea). Needs more Black Lagoon mentioned though. And Maria Holic/Happiness! for traps. Side-note: Eureka 7 or TLGL/TGLG/w.e weren't that good for me, but eh, difference of tastes. There are other good titles but meh, I'm off to continue Monte Cristo.
For people who hate anime in its entirety and fail to understand why people actually watch it and need a few good examples why its rubbish,
Hametsu no Mars. God damnit another essay, I knew I should have stayed away from this topic. At least I made it shorter by not including a seinen list.

Well, it's probably not very difficult to fix, if you decide to.

I have a friend(not me, because I don't watch anime) who just downloaded Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Hopefully it's good.

Hmm, what have I watched that's recent? I like the new Slayers series. Even if they're well, er, somewhat variable in quality. They're kind of heavy on the rehash side, too. Still, I'm happy to have five seasons instead of three xD Karigurashi no Arrietty (Arrietty the Borrower) was really good. It's pretty easy to understand, too, in case any of you are learning Japanese. I've watched 14 episodes of the new Full Metal Alchemist cartoon so far. It seems pretty good, though the series looks pretty long--64 episodes! I'm not sure I'll make it through the whole thing. My attention has been waning for the second half of SAO. It started off kind of iffy, then I really got into it, and now I don't really care too much again. That last episode was creepy as hell, too. Ugh. Are they going to end the series or keep going?
