Epic sampling project!

musenji

Joined: Feb 02 2010

In an effort to find more guitar material, I am alphabetically (by tabber) going down the list of every fingerstyle tab on the site.

Mostly I'm just going for tabs of music from games I have played. However every once in a while I try out a tab from a game I haven't played.

I've saved 28 tabs so far, and I just got to RareWare! (in the C's). This is a looooong project.

Sadly only 8 of your tabs are from games I've played, so our ships passed rather speedily in the night.

I'm currently beached on Colin Spade Island...and with 40 tabs to get through, it looks like I'll be stuck there for a while.

Whoo! Off the island. That took a while.

Also as a result of seeing a few of my favored tabbers tabbing Xenogears/saga games, I finally decided to order Xenogears. Never played it before.

I understand the soundtrack is really good--and it has 40 remixes on OCRemix.

Enjoy those 250+ songs he has tabbed out! At least most of them aren't crazy hard. Kabukibear will be an interesting set :)

Keep in mind that I'm only reading tabs that the tabber has labelled as "fingerstyle". So no electric guitar stuff.

And, I'm only reading tabs from games I've played. So:

Nope, unfortunately I have not played any of those three games. (Well, I think I played Mario Party once, but I don't remember the music at all.)

Hslesperance? Well, it turns out that most of his tabs aren't fingerstyle, so I skip them for this project.

Yeah he's a fingerstyle beast and a large portion of his tabs are from games I've played--so his section will take QUITE a while.

Hmm, thedstring. Maybe we could make a deal.

I have some tabs that I think very, very few people have actually played through (that's most of my tabs actually). For example, my absolute favorite self-created tab:

http://www.gametabs.net/dragon-quest-iv/unknown-castle

I'm incredibly proud of the arrangement (originally I didn't even suspect it *could* work as a solo, and it turned out to be musically rich), and practiced for a full month to get it to performance quality.

The recording got a healthy amount of love:

http://www.gametabs.net/recording/musenji/unknown-castle

...but as you can see, it doesn't seem anybody actually tried the tab for themselves (aside from Auri who I know ran through it once or twice and gave a bit of feedback to me on the side _@_V).

Thoughts? Maybe we could do a tab for tab trade with some level of discussion about them?

In the meanwhile, I'm confronting the first boss, and hope that I'm not allergic to pollen.

Nice! I probably can't help so much with music theory then (been a while and only took one year), but over the course of this project I've found quite a few spots, even on the best tabs, where a much easier fingering is possible keeping the same notes, or only trading off one musically redundant note.

Thus it is that my de facto standard comment during this project has been "Great! Although..." hahaha. It's amazing how many overall-fantastic tabs have that one spot where a small change makes all the difference.

Now it's back to the Stamen47 flower garden. Didn't even get through all his tabs yesterday. I made it like 1/4 the way through lol.

Speaking of this, I just looked back at Stamen47's Zanarkand tab. I performed it note-for-note once, but with a LOT of fingering changes, all of which made it much, much easier to play without sacrificing a single note. I want to impart this knowledge to someone in the form of a full tutorial, haha. It's too much info to put in just one comment. Although I guess anyone who wants to figure it out could just watch my recording, it's now buried in the site and I kinda wanna give a guitar lesson, lol

I've never done one of those Youtube tutorial thingers. Seems like too much work to put it all together and do all the editing. Maybe I could make up a tab with the fretting changes, and all of the left hand fingerings marked, and just leave a comment on his tab that anyone who is really serious about playing it could send me a PM.

Hopefully I'm not totally cut off from the world! I just felt like I needed some guitar inspiration and new reading material. And as I'm most inspired by big, interesting projects I can really dive into, this fit the bill nicely.

Now that I'm doing it, I'm thinking, "why didn't I do this before?"

What are your camping trips like? I imagine if I went camping I'd be doing a lot of hiking and nature-seeing, as opposed to scrolling through 2400 guitar tabs on an internet website. :p

I'll admit, sometimes I read the first few measures of a tab, glance a bit further and am like "nah, I don't care about this song enough to keep going".

Thedstring has made me question every time I did that. (I should note that I only did it a few times, a lot of times I pushed through.)

Because I thought I didn't care about Bran Bal or Terra from FFIX, but I couldn't just go and skip a couple of his if they were eligible, cause we had that discussion earlier in the thread.

So I try the tabs, and find out they're just awesomely fun to play (Terra especially iirc). Go and check them out, for sure.

...I suppose at some point I should provide a list or resource of tabs that seem to be hidden gems.
