SNES Fingerstyle Project - Official Submission and Judging Thread

archard

Joined: Jan 11 2007

Here's the thread for submitting your arrangements to the SNES fingerstyle project. Simply upload the tab and put a link to it here. Our 4 judges will then evaluate it and post whether or not it's acceptable. If 3 out of 4 judges accept it, then it will be included in the book of arrangements.

Requirements for being accepted

  • The tab must be arranged for classical/fingerstyle guitar
  • The tab must be an arrangement of a song that appeared on a Super Nintendo game
  • The tab must your own original work
  • The tab must not be a direct guitar transcription. Meaning that there has to be some level of arrangement to the piece and it can't simply be a transcription of a piece written for guitar. Transcriptions from other instruments, like piano, are acceptable.
  • The tab must be neat and well presented, and it must be outputted in PDF form
  • The tentative deadline for this project is June 30th.

Remember it's about songs from SNES games. Unfortunately, Alundra is no SNES game and therefore its songs do not qualify for this project. It's a pity: Alundra is an awesome game with an even better soundtrack. :S

I am wondering about the PDF format...what I mean is we should have all the pieces set up teh same way so we need to decide how that's going to look. I'm just saying because some people might use different programs to create their pdfs and we'll end up being all over the map on the look of the individual pieces. Finale and Guitarpro create PDFs, I don't know about PowerTab, but we need to decide on which to use. For those who don't have the programs maybe they can get it from other forum users or can email their arrangement to someone who has it and thet can create the pdf?

I personally prefer the Guitar pro PDF's.

They look the best to me, as they show tab and Notes. I'm not sure finale shows tab?

EDIT: I take that back, finale does.

Honestly, I doubt it really matters the exact format as long as they show they same thing. The book doesn't have to be perfect IMO.

This is a good point. I think we should go with Guitar Pro. If you can't get Guitar Pro, just give me a PM and we'll *cough* ...figure something out...

This is for the "SNES Fingerstyle Arrangements" project, but also has the original melody at the beginning. It is very similar to the original song. I just played it by ear so some parts may be wrong as far as where notes may be played.

Good Beginner song, btw. ;D

There are a couple versions on the game, but the BGM editor in debug mode states this song to be "Eight Melodies", not "Sound Stone" or crap like that.

just a note, this is not the "Eight Melodies" song from Mother 1.

Archard, two things.

First off we should probably put something up on the front page for this project as not all tabbers might be current forum members. If you want I could create this.

Second off I might need more time with vacations coming up. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one in this boat.

Good idea, feel free to do so ron.

And yes, I know not everyone is gonna be done by June 30th. Don't worry, it most likely be extended... I just like to have some sort of timeframe up so we actually get it done :P

So the tabs we create must be unique instead of a note for note type of tab? Can we submit more than one song? Also, you should have some proof readers to check for errors and stuff. It would also help with the format.

And yes, we do have four judges to check over all submissions.

Precisely. If the song itself was originally played on guitar, then transcribing that to guitar would involve no creativity whatsoever. I want all the tabs to have to have some level of creativity or arrangement. If the song was original played on piano, for example... then it will at least involve some sort of imagination.

Maikoi92: Solid. Good job.

Thanks for your comment archard. I have made a couple of changes to optimize playability.

Also I think notes sound a bit more profound or melancholic if played on the lower strings lower down... For example seventh fret a-string rather than second fret d-string :P

Thanks for the kind comments TheDoomOfAllFires and archard.
To be honest tho, I've been waiting for someone to criticize the chord:

C |5
G |2
D#|2
A#|2
F |4
C |2

found in bars 7 and 11 of the GP5 document. The chord fits well and sounds right if you play it on guitar but if your're using the "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" it just sounds like horse faeces.

But when you say it sounds fine, are you reffering to the way it sounds on guitar, in the midi or both? I know that it is a valid chord, I just assumed that people would play the midi to get a preview of what the arrangement sounds like and be turned off by the way the chord sounds because of their synthesizer. In the midi that chord sounds like thunder for some reason.

@ candyman's piece. Very nice sounding, but it's kind of awkward to play on the guitar tuned 2 steps down ;P

If you don't like the tuning BohmaN, you can always play it in standard tuning ^_^. I personally prefer to play it in standard tuning with the capo on the 4th or 6th. The only reason I list the tunings is so that the piece is in the correct key.
Also, I love the peice you chose "Forrest of Illusion". A nice little melody that I had almost forgotten about. Curious to see what the longer peice will be.

It usually takes me a solid month or two to learn pieces to performance level (my performance level, which isn't that good) but I suppose I should be able to be seen playing my own works. I'll get started after next week tho as I have a few exams comming up this week.
Thanks again for all the comments. I always have a lot of fun arranging pieces but the comments are the icing on the cake.

Here's my next arrangement! A little longer :). There are a few tempo flawes which is probably because I decided to pussle it togeather in 4/4, which was probably dumb. ^^ If you have any tips on improvement I'd be happy to read them :).

What do you think about the last part? Does it fit in? It's in the orignal... ;P

I love the tune, but your arrangement looks like it still needs some work.
It starts off pretty good, but when it gets to the end part I'm not sure what part of the tune I'm playing anymore. I'd start by ironing out all the "tempo flaws".
PS: The section in the middle reminds me of that walla walla bing bang song. ^_^

Do you think I should write it in something else than 4/4?

I thought the piece sounded nice, I hope my arrangement does it justice. I added a bit of a simple intro, and there shouldn't be anything too hard for an average kinda player to tackle. Then again, I didn't get too imaginative and while I could have made it more colourful I thought I'd just keep this one simple.

BohmaN: 4/4 timing works works well for the piece so there is no reason to change it. The last part also has no reason to be left out. It is part of the tune, and when people want a tab, they usually want to play the tune in it's entirety. The note timings is what I'd be working on as i think there is a lot of room for improvement there.
ItsAllMeaningless: Tabbing pieces that are already up should be cool, as thats what i did and nobody's scolded at me yet. Haven't played Harvest Moon but the tab flows nicely and nothing sounds off about it. Except maybe that rest in bar 19, unless that's supposed to be in there ~_^
Binarynova: Why hide in a corner for? the tab sounds good. think it could be improved if you added some chords to help flesh it out a bit tho.
Maikoi92: I've had my eye on this peice for a while but wasnt sure what to do with it. I'm sure a lot of SOM fans out the are gonna love this one. One of my fav tunes from the game.

Yah, the guitar doesn't quite 'carry' the note like w/e they were using in the orginal. I tried adding in a little something there but decided to leave it be. But an idea just struck me! Add in a vibrato and it really helps to flesh out that bit. Here's the modified verion, I left 24 alone.. just sounded better without it still - even tho its a longer pause.

Take 2!

Thanks for the critique!

[edit: Nevermind that, it just sounds kinda bad in the midi... on the actual guitar it sounds alright]
