someone already said Kirby's Dream Course for snes, but that game needs double recognition at least. best use of the kirby franchise ever.
evo: search for eden was a great game for the snes too, though i'm not sure of the level of recognition it got.
blood omen: legacy of kain was the first game i got with my playstation 1 (still have it, too) and it is one of my favorite games still. good voice acting and writing (simon templeman is still the evil voice in my head); the music was awesome and atmospheric, so different from the midi synth music i was used to hearing in games.
speaking of which, i would love to find tabs of some of this. i know most of them wouldn't translate well or at all, but solemn dirge (willendorf) especially would work well, and ones like elzevir the dollmaker and avernus cathedral could be arranged quite nicely.
The Adventures of Alundra
Okay, this game isn't really underrated, in fact most reviews are quite positive. I just think that too few people have ever played or at least heard of the game. Go play it, it's Zelda for your PSone!
Exactly the game I thought of when I saw this topic.
YES!!!!! This is one of the most underated and unknown games out there... With that said, Skullmonkeys was good too ;)
I would nominate Legend of Legaia on the PS1, the Shin Megami Games, and the Touhou Series on PC.
I would also consider nominating Dark Cloud 1, ICO, and Okage: Shadow King (all PS2 games)
And to whoever said Gitaroo Man, I have to agree ;)
I have always loved Bubsy 1 and 2 for the Super Nes.
Also, Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse was good too. The music for the forest level was really great. Coincidentally, if you muted the game, it went really well with the music of Captain Beefheart.
i wonder if someone play Outlander Stalker for MegaDrive. i dont find that game anywhere.
his style is like zelda, the game has the same creators of shining force 2.
Turok was really solid, but for a different system (older one, forget). I would say an underated game would have to be Heroes of Might and Magic for PC...game offered a lot of replay value.
I play that one to this day (Heroes 3 Complete, Gold edition). It is the most frustratingly, simple, addictive strategy game ever! XD
Truly underrated game, I think I heard about it once, then a few years later I saw it sitting on the shelf at Gamestop used and fairly cheap, so I picked it up. I sure am glad I did. Great story and some great settings spanning from Roman centurians in the Middle-East, to Cambodia, to Charlamagne era France to a modern day mansion in New England. And one hell of a scary soundtrack. And what I would consider one of the greatest gameplay innovations; the sanity meter. The more tramatic experiences your character goes through, the lower the sanity meter goes, meaning your character will start to hallucinate and see some pretty trippy stuff. The game will even mess with you the player, I will admit to believing my memory card had died a couple times because of this game.
Truly underrated game, I recommend every true gamer should have a copy to play, at midnight with the lights out of course.
I haven't seen anybody talking about Cave Story for PC... it's an awesome game...
Not good graphics, but the storyline ~for the win~....
And the weapons reminds me of the good old Contra... (the reaaally old one)
Saiyuki for the PSX. Probably my favorite tactic game along with Valkyrie Profile. The music during battle was a bit annoying, but otherwise it just kept me happy, and the characters as well.
Sailor Moon: Another Story for the SNES. I didn't really understand the game, but it was still good. The music was AWESOME LoL
Quest 64 is rather underrated because it requires a controller pack and the beginning really sucks. Near the end of the game, the soundtrack totally picks up, but hardly anyone ever gets to see the end. This song, which is my first transcription for this site, really gets me emotionally:
IMO Max Payne was awesome in every single aspect. By the time it was released the graphix were outstanding. The story was nicely made, although it could had been longer, and the Bullet Time was a cherry on the top. I waited long and hard for Max Payne 2, and when i finally played it through... Well, it was good, but not as good as the 1st one. The story was OK, graphix were nice, everything was OK, but not epic like Max Payne 1. But the ragdoll physics gave nice laughs.
Zone of the Enders. Go out and get it right now. I think Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner is better in terms of action tho. Much more killing of the badies in that one. Some other good ones are:
The Bouncer (PS2)- I had some fun with that one even tho its pretty short
Shadow of Destiny(PS2)
Legaia 2 (PS2)
Illusion of Gaia (SNES)- I actaully dont see people talking about it that much
Earthworm Jim (SNES)- Its fun shit
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (PS2) - Ive actaully never seen anyone talk about this one
Gungrave 1 and 2 - Good ol fashioned killin games check it out
Theres probobly more but im too lazy to think about em

I'll second that. Illusion of Gaia is one of my all-time favorite games. All the locations were very 'historical fiction' and at the time when I first played it I was all about Egyptian history, Easter Island, the Aztecs and Mayans, etc. That game came at just the right time and mixed my love of gaming with my love of world history.
Illusion of Gaia and Crystalis are two of the greatest top-down action-adventure-RPGs (;p) of all time, imo.

Pikmin 1+2.
Not entirely underrated but it's pretty down there. I can't say I've met too many people who've played this game. Hopefully, with the inclusion of Olimar in SSBB, his games are getting a little more recognition.
Story is moderately humorous (Louis is awesome!) and the gameplay is interesting thanks to the varied enemies and Pikmin types. Additionally, the game boasts some lush, beautiful environments. (The water looks especially nice.) The controls are fluid and identical between the two games which is appreciated.

Agreed to such a massive extent it's absurd. And yeah, Quest 64 was a really good game.

Later in the game it became pretty tough XD
It's a real jewel, everybody who owns a wii or GC go get it NOW! :D

Greatest Snes game ever. Well tied with chrono trigger and fire emblem. The only problem is that you have to get a patched version to play it because it was only released in Japan. Totally worth it. Beats a majority of today's srpg's; it's an sprg but when your units get into fights, it's basically like final fantasy. And the graphics are very good for an old school game =).

Final fantasy 9 - underated
lets try overated???
final fantasy 12 rubbish battle system, music had no emotion or feeling, average story, gay protagonist. Balthier was the only highlight.
Call of duty 4 - underated
GTA4 rubbish
