Tune Contest 59 - Evil Character's Theme !

Hi friends !

So the theme for this 59th contest is... BAD GUY THEME !
What i'm expecting is to have your song + few words, lines, about that immaginary "Evil Guy/Girl" you created in your mind ! :)

Why is he "bad" ? Tortured past ? Experiments ? Madness ?
I'd like to hear a bit of his personality in the song, as you can hear madness in Kefka's Theme or megalomania in Kuja's Theme (yeah, i know, FF, always FF...) !

I remember the original Character's Theme contest was really awsome with wonderful entries, so face that legacy and make great songs :D

At least 1 minute long, any style, any instruments, deadline to the 6th june !

Congratulations Hashel! I really enjoyed everyone's submissions in the last one.

I have a nice quartal harmony piece I just started working on that I was hoping to use, but it doesn't fit the theme at all. So, since it's an evil character theme, I think I'll try to incorporate 12-tone rows for this entry (which means I'll definitely lose lol.)

Edit: Also, I installed the Sontatina Orchestral Pack to Sibelius and it works, but was a bit wonky with an existing project. So, I installed Reaper and imported a midi, but there was no sound. I'm not too interested in learning a DAW atm, so I did not read the tutorials. I mostly just want to import a midi, then export it with the Orchestral sounds (which do work in Reaper.) Anyone have a suggestion?

Jammed for a few hours on this, until my fingers started to hurt, then I scrapped the idea. Oh well, theres time.

@ Natenmn I'm not familiar with Sibelius at all, so I'm not sure how it works with the orchestral pack in question.

In Reaper you create a 'virtual instrument track' and apply a virtual instrument of your choice into its FX list. In the case of the pack mentioned above, you need a soundfont player, and load one of the 'instruments' included in the SSO pack into that. It gets a bit more complicated to get everything working correctly I'm afraid. I'm not sure about others but it took a bit of troubleshooting to get my stuff right (which I can go more deep into, but if you don't think you want to put the time into it right now, I'm not gonna jump the gun right here).

Simple thing you can try is downloading (and unpacking) http://vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plugin=Strings&id=355 to your plugin folder, create a virtual instrument track and select the thing you downloaded in the FX list. Put your imported midi on that track and play with the settings.

^ Avaru is correct you will need an VST. player of some sort and then select the instrument for each track you imported with the Midi.

Once you have all your .dll files this video explains how to get it all running in reaper.

I got all of the sounds for Sibelius working finally, but that SSO pack is so much nicer that I'll still probably try to use them with Reaper.

Thanks for the advice Ava and BigHeadClan! I really appreciate it!. I'll try out everything you posted later today when I'm able. Again, much thanks! You're both scholars and gentlepeople.

Don't know if I got it right, but I think that's it!
and don't know if it's an original character, but my final boss have the two sides of the theatre masks representing each of his personality. Got a lot of inspiration from dark themes for vampires, and etc... I'm not very creative in creating characters so... I can't offer more than this :)

I really thought more about his skills, like when he changes his mask his skills and moves change, etc...

The song is prepared for a looping!

Still doesn't sound very evil to me but here's something:

Untouchable, the character in question has been cast out from the uptight backwater village community for plot related reasons. Now he is a hermit living in the mountains, and still hated down in the village. The good guys are hired to get rid of this poor soul, and as the 'evil' hermit is drawing his last breaths, the protagonist should be thinking why did this person need to die anyway?

I feel that I could have polished this up a lot more, but here is my entry:

The Fall

Story: Generic story of some awesome hero turning evil, returning to his hometown and single-handedly slaughtering everyone there. Once he kills the first villager, he fully embraces his evilness. He sets fires, and does other evil things.

About: This is for string quartet and timpani. I'm not really sure if it's playable, but it all fits within the respective instruments' ranges and good string players can play some crazy hard stuff (not that this would be hard, as I really don't know), so it probably is playable lol. I do have a presentable score if anyone is interested in looking at it.

It has a form roughly of: A,B,A,C,B,A... though each part has some sort of variation.

This one is mostly tonal, centering around d-minor, but it moves around enough that I was hesitant to put a key on it and just left it open. I used a lot of chromatic mediants and chromaticism in general. The middle section is my favorite.

I used a 12 tone row matrix that I created (it moves around some transpositions, inversions, and retrograde inversions for variety and movement), and I don't think it turned out that horrible sounding lol. It fits nicely and might represent the fear/uneasiness of the villagers... maybe the inner workings of the mind of the evil dude. I dunno. Anyways, it would be the B sections that use this.

Awesome natemn, it even

Thanks, Ava! I really liked yours a lot, as well. I agree that it does sound like The Walking dead sorta. It's really cool and has some sort of ethnic, ethereal, something else feel to it. It's awesome.

Also, it does sound evil, but like you implied, it seems more like the "good guys" were the evil doers and didn't realize it util after they killed the hermit. Makes me think the town is more shady than they seemed at first. I dunno, I think that's why I liked it so much... I was able to see a clear story in my head.

It's a bit sad some of you didn't had the time to finish, but i'm myself really buzzy.
Some great songs once again, good work everyone :)

Masquerade (Giovanniac) : Nice one, sounds like a good theme for the phantom of the opera too, fits really well that masked character !
The Evil Brodorion (Brody) : Nice use of the laugh, the rhythm guitar gives a little something more, excellent sound quality too, well done !
Untouchable (Avaruussaha) : This sounds so melancholic but with a feel of pain and anger. I like the way that this evil guy is just a victim of a plot, nothing's really good, nothing's really bad, everything is somwhere inbetween, and the song fits it really well !
The Fall (Natenmn) : The story and some parts of the song REALLY reminds me of FF7 and Sephiroth ! It's a really good piece, "long" but not repetitive, i wa sjust waiting for a bit more of power in the 3rd part but that's really good !

The winner is Avaruussaha !
It's strange cause it's the more "relaxing" song, but there is a feeling in there that can makes you feel really uncomfortable and you can feel all the rancour and ressentment of the character :)

Avaruussaha has been killing it. I just updated the results list and didn't realize until now that Ava has been winning every contest he submitted to! The acoustic guitar on your songs are always really nice and create a melancholic atmosphere. The melodies tend to not grab my attention or be too memorable, but maybe that's intentional for certain songs, becuase you proved you could make a strong, catchy melody on the racing theme. So maybe melody could use a bit more focus, but overall you've been making great songs that all deservedly won and I look forward to more.

I barely started a song for this contest (only 4 measures on 1 instrument) and might continue to work on it some day. Was thinking we had 3 weeks as usual, but it turned out to be only 2.

And I was planning on posting on OCRemix to generate some interest in the tune contests. We tend to have only about 5 on average. I'm not aware of any other ongoing contests online geared towards VG music, except maybe Kwakfest. Even on OCR they have a lot of competitions, but they tend to be remixes of game songs rather than original music.

Other sites that might be worth plugging are DwellingofDuels, Newgrounds, VGMusic and any other suggestions.

So what does everyone think; should I reach out to some other sites or do we want to keep this contained within the Gametabs community?

Uhh... Killing it indeed, at least the list for theme ideas I'm supposed to have this often.

Generating more traffic around here certainly wouldn't hurt, I've yet to dwell into other sites of similar interests so there's not much I could say about it though. Well, it's hard not to know OCRemix, there's some rad stuff there.

Melodies really seem hard to come up with for me, and most of my stuff ends up quite ambient (so not necessarily by choice). I've been trying to work around it, but it still is a slow progress. This time I had 2 other projects for this theme, with more planning so to say... Ended up with a completely unrelated quickish jam due to time lost because of watery poop week.

Good job everyone, but it seems like I had a week of suffering to draw inspiration from this time around.
