FF7 Album promotion & discussion, next event : NES Tribute Album !

Hello guys ! Several points to talk about here !

Intro

It's not finished but we already can say "we made it" and i'm really happy about that !
Thanks to all of you who during a year cheered up this project !
I hope you had fun making it ^__^ i did !

1) How many CDs

We will have more or less 1h40 of music for this album, the problem is a CD is 1h19.59 maximum.
So we can :
1) Make 2 CD's
2) Make 1 CD more bonus individual tracks
3) Make 1 CD and deleted some songs (but which ones ? based on what ?)
4) other ?

2) Bandcamp

Here is what's written on this site : "Your Bandcamp account comes with 200 downloads per month of tracks or albums that you're giving away (meaning you’ve set them to free, or let-fan-name-price with no minimum and the fan enters zero). Once each month, we look at your download credits, and if you have less than 200 remaining, we bump you back up to 200. Your next bump is on 12/28/13.

If your download credits drop to zero, your music will still be available, but your free tracks and albums will automatically switch to paid. You can avoid this by either a) buying more download credits for a modest fee by clicking "get more", below, or b) selling music (we add 1,000 credits for every $500 USD in sales)"

So i don't think it's the good place for us, maybe just make a .Zip file with cover and track liste and the songs and put it on mediafire ?
Also there is french Torrent website (T411.me)and i think to put it in (more mediafire) to make people discover it by searching for "Final Fantasy 7".

3) Cover

For now we got this :

I like it, are you guys ok to use this one ?
Does someone has an idea for the "back" with the trak list ?

4) Promotion !

As soon as i have all the tracks i'll made a small trailer with pictures of gametabs, numbers about the album (x number of tracks, x number of musician...).
I'd like you to help for this to be known and put the video and your private channel too, even if you didn't entered for the project you can do it, but you're free. If you don't want to use it on your channel there is no problem ! I'll put a download link here with the vidoe and feel fre to use it or no :)

5) NEXT EVENT

Ok so i think of a "Seasonal Event" !
We will make an album (or EP, can be just 5-6 songs) for winter, spring...)

So i need you to vote for the next theme !

1) NES

(+10)

2) FFVI (+1)
3) Chrono Trigger & Cross

(+5)

4) Zelda
5) No more album !

If you got any recommandation, ideas, criticisms, seak your mind ! :)

PS: i voted for NES :D

Hmmm personally I'm for just putting it up on some torrent's and just trying to get everyone that contributed to give a shout-out for the album on the various Social media sights they have.

I don't know if I will have time for the next event, I have far to much on the go that I put off. But if that changes I may hop in. Learned a lot from the last one

1) Are you talking about physically printing cds? If so, how would expenses be covered? Would you do a kickstarter or something?

2) I don't really have anything to say on this subject

3) I can't actually see the cover, but I would be interested in seeing what sort of cover, backing, and inside stuff you have for the cd, even it will only ever be in digital form

4) Careless and I will make a video for our song and we'll link it.

5) I like all those options, but if I had to vote, I guess I'd say Chrono Trigger/Cross.

Don't worry if you don't enter every time it's a problem :) Anyway the deadline would be march 15 (2014) so you'll maybe have some time at this moment :)

1) No, virtual CDs, but i like to respect the time of a CD ^^ A Kickstarter ? What is it ?
2) Okay
3) ok a little bug, i can't upload any picture for now :s I was not planning makign an "inside" as it's only virtual, but if someone can do it, let's do it!

Hi Hashel, nice to see you again :) Now let's answer your points:

1.) I think two cd's with ~50 Minutes are OK, insteat we may can choose a few songs to get on a "B-sites" cd.
2.) I have my own web server. If you like, I can upload and mirror the album. *
3.) Where can I see the cover? ^^
4.) I would share it on my channel and maybe on my private facebook and so on^^
5.) NES (I heared it's named famicon in a few countries) would be a realy cool project.

3)Could re-work how the top 2 lines look? FF7 in white would stand out more, could find better for 2nd line like trying out the green that stands out at bottom right. gametabs.net is good as is.
The contrast between the sword+fg lifestream compared to bg lifestream could be more progressive at the bottom cut mainly imo. Looks good when your eyes are unfocused but when you pinpoint that spot it stands out & seems too odd for me to be ignored.
Back cover should be bg-ish if you go for such a format:
Disc 1 | Disc 2
Tracks | Tracks
etc
If you get more creative like Tiger Lillies's RotAM back-cover (cant find pic, will take photo of it when I get home monday) the image doesn't need to be simply scenery.

NES, +5
Chrono Trigger & Cross, +3

1) 2 cd format (double album)

SixStringDealey

Joined: May 16 2013

1) 2 cd format (double album) has a professional look to it. (even just in the formatting of the track properties, so as to appear like proper cd's when playing in itunes, mediaplayer, etc. track progression should be considered. maybe by order of each song's appearance in the game, or the actual OST, or something else that sounds cool. xD)

all of that said, digital is what's in. :P

2) maybe soundcloud is a good option? (i've only used it to listen to a few things, myself)

3) the cover's not bad at all, but if there's an interesting improvement, go for it. :P

4) i'll gladly share whatever we come up with on the social junk that i use.

5) i'll join the next one if there's a tune that suits me. :P i have a suggestion. you've suggested seasonal albums. maybe those albums could literally represent seasons, or something along the lines of elements. (a compilation of watery or fiery music for example.) participants could choose their elemental/seasonal tune of choice from their own favourite games, creating pretty interesting albums. :D

then again, tunes all from one title are pretty cool, too. i think a sonic theme could be pretty good. (if so, dibs on chemical plant zone or whatever from sonic 2 xD)

Thanks for say you'll share

I don't think it's possible to download from soundcloud :/

I like the Element idea !
So the 3rd album (spring album) will be "The 4 Elements" !
We could cut the album (or doubble album) in 4 : Fire, Water, Earth, Air/Thunder.

Exemples !

Fire, themes from fire temples, volcanos, deserts, burning cities, fire elemental character or boss...
Water : themes from underwater stages, temples, rainy cities, boat travel, ship battle...
Earth : themes from caves, forests, mountains...
Air/Thunder : themes from flying cities, flying bosses, thunder elemental characters, fileds of thunders, airship travels...

But that would be for Marsh ^^
It's a great idea, people can make cover from any game they want, and those themes are in most of the games !

Given the choice, I vote for NES.

Chrono Trigger and Cross have been done to death, which is not to say we should never do it. But...I have so many classical recordings of NES already! Including this which would be an official submission for me:

And then I realized that the chord progression from Chrono Cross's Another World is the same progression as the chorus from Peace of Mind by Boston, and life was never quite the same.

1. i think digital format is good for the album, one big digital CD

2. bandcamp and social media seems ok for now, and Hashel "kickstarter" is basically a fund raising thing that helps get money for projects. recently Keiji Inafune and his team from Inti Creates (the awesome makers/contributors to the Mega Man, yes, MEGA MAN) used kickstarter to raise funds for their latest project a game called Mighty No. 9, the spiritual successor to Mega Man. they raised like a gabazillion dollars and met their goal in less than a month or something i heard hehe. don't quote me on that. back to the topic

3. the cover looks amazing! to play bowser's advocate, is the dude who made the original art ok with it being on the album? and the songs that we all made and remixed are ok to be distributed?

4. i was thinking of voting for Chrono Trigger, but I want to explore other games and possibilities, what do you think of a Free for All theme or something of the like?

First of all this is an awesome project Hashel and I'm really excited about hearing the end result.

The piece of art for the front cover was created by myself and I'm chuffed to bits you asked to use it. As you wanted to modify it to fit with your needs I'm happy to release the original files for it to make this easier.

First the largest resolution jpeg (about 3500 x 2500) is available on my deviantart site by clicking download on the right hand side here :- http://ma5h.deviantart.com/art/Final-Fantasy-VII-321121960

If anyone would like the original XCF (GIMP) file so they can change things on a more fundamental level then it is on my external harddrive packed away (I've just moved house) but if it would help I can search it out for you. Just let me know via Deviantart as I check that fairly regularly and I can pass the file on.

Many thanks and good luck!

But, again, songs on NES are shorter and therefore there could be more of them...I would also hope that people wouldn't make, for example, a five-minute long track of a 20-second repeating song...

IMPACTO

First of all, congrats to hashel for leading and finishing this. That's one of the few succesfull projects in Gametabs. Kudos

I don't think you should go for fancy stuff for the release. Just a .zip folder on mediafire and it should be way enough. If everyone promotes it on the various social networks, it should make its way on its own.
Also, its the first project of this kind we release, so I think its for the best to keep it simple and humble.

As for the next albums format, I don't think small albums (5-6 tracks) are doable, as a lot of members will probably participate and it would lead to some selections (which is never nice in an open community). Or collabs...

As for the theme, I'm gonna get awfully personal and shit but if you don't mind, keep reading.

I did not participate in this project because I've been quite busy recently, but also because the theme of the project did not touch me at all. I have no feelings for ffVI, game and music, nor uematsu in general (would actually love to elaborate on how much I hate this game, but it's off topic).

As already stated, its the kind of theme that has been done, done, done, done, and done again. Like CT/CC, Zelda, Mario, etc...
Even NES is a "done to death" theme. What is it gonna be? Mario, Zelda, Megaman, FF, Castlevania, Tetris, ...
It really looks like I'm trying to shit on "mainstream games", but does anyone here feel confident enough to do a fresh and original take on one of those classic soundtracks?

I really would like us to bring up lesser known/younger game franchise. As the gametabs community, I feel like we should make something to demonstrate that game music is something important, and not only by staying in our old classic/nostalgia filled games.

Of course, we won't get much interest by covering jazzjackrabbit or skyroads, but recent titles got awards on their ost and it would be a shame not to take advantage of that.
What about SuperMeatBoy? Bastion? Skyrim? Skullgirls? Games even get their OST released on steam, and that shows that there is an interest from people for vgm.

All that to say, I would prefer a free theme. With tracks that go from classics, to younger stuff, just to show that we are not stuck up asses blocked in their timeless classics.
(Though, as Hakoria stated, I'm not against a Tim Follin theme :p )
If we have to choose a theme, anything is good for me and I'll follow the community. As long as it is not a 1 game theme.

tl;dr: NO UEMATSU

Really interresting to read

Really interresting to read Rex !
As a Uematsu Fan Boy, i do'nt understand why you hate him, but... taste...

I think the "4th Elements Theme" is a good idea, you can find elements , or somthing with rock, grass, mud, fire, lava, sun, heat, cold, ice, water, air, thunder, rain... in most of the games, old or new.

An other fact is some of us CAN'T make a tab themselves. For exemple, i need midi file, or at least a music sheet (but it takes me a loooong time because i'm not confortable with music reading.
So making a "independant games" theme, for exemple, would stop some of us to make covers.

I'll try to make more open themes, but it will be for the 4th album ^^

I won't make any selection for the next album, as i didn't for this one, even if you are a beguinner, you can enter, it's representing the community, not the "elit"

It's a fair point Rex, although FF XII is the newest game I've ever even played, and FFX before that, so I wouldn't be able to take part in the fun. :(

(actually technically snailiad is the newest game I've played, hahahah)

With the NES theme, it wouldn't be just one game...maybe there could even be a limit of one track per game...and maybe it would have to be a lesser-known track. Who knows? Voice your concerns, and maybe we can address them within the format.

Personally I'm unfamiliar with castlevania music.

There is a Stroooooong market for retro games right now. If people can do it well, I think it will be received well. What if we picked a list of the top 25 NES games of all time, and limited it to one track per game.

And yeah, maybe we should say "nothing that's been beaten to death, unless it's a REALLY fresh take". Like for example, Kabukibear's Jazzy Super Mario Bros. theme. that is TOTALLY fresh! (although I definitely would have less repeats than this midi)

i'd just like to point out that i have zero issue tackling original takes on classic soundtracks.

additionally, i don't really mind any particular theme. there's something great to draw from in any direction you could go. really to me, it'd be more a concern with continuity. the looser the theme, the more all over the place the submissions will be, making a straight through listen of the final product less appealing in general. you want there to be a smooth transition between pieces. i'd almost be more interested in an album that has a broader pool of music to draw from (something like NES, SNES, GENESIS or major series) but is more honed in on a style of arrangements - creating a more cohesive set of songs. of course, that could also majorly limit the number of people wanting to be involved. so scratch all that.

it looks like it will flow fairly well and the order being somewhat familiar is a cool touch. the bulk of epic tunes as the 2nd cd hits that energetic climax is really good, then it calms down as it comes to an end. very nice!

i'm not too worried about theme. i will just wait and see if there's anything that looks like my kind of tune. if not, i'll wait for the next one. NES is cool for the range of variation, but you've got to love some CC/CT. and zelda. :P

You just outlined the Sonata-Allegro form, hahahah

"Oh, do the melody a couple times to establish it, then do a variation on the melody because that's interesting to listen to, maybe put a virtuostic ditty in with the variation, but then bring it back to the melody again to close it all up."

-Composers from 1675-1900

Was thinking Passacaglia form.

"Oh, taking this 8 measures melody of Schubert.. now I'll make a 20minutes-long piece of variation after variation (no single repeat) that will also become one of the most complexly-written & difficult pieces to play."

-Composer from the early 20th century, Godowsky

:p
Minus achieving the near-alien difficulty and details in such a re-arrange, it just shows that 20 seconds of a NES melody can be far sufficient material for some here who wish to tackle those related forms while re-arranging.
And yeah, repeat ad infinitum with no variations is a big no. I doubt anyone here would have done that anyway.

@Rex: Newer/Indie games is interesting, good on you bringing it up.

@hashel: not really a hate for the man. It's more a hate for the infinite recognition he gets for his work, which I think is horribly overrated. But yeah, tastes...

The elements theme is cool, but I would see it more as one big album with four sides (CDs).
Kinda weird to have a "fire album", "water album", etc...

As for the tabs, that's pretty true. Though with some sheets, a previous cover from someone and some help from the community, it can be manageable.

For selections, yeah that would be suckish but necessary for small albums of 5-6 tracks.
Or we squash everyone in collabs, which can be cool as well.

@musenji: GO PLAY NEW GEMS. DID YOU LOST THE TRUE SPIRIT?

Yup, NES is not necessary all that well known. There's a lot of very good tunes that don't get much love. What I wouldn't want to see though, is another NES cover album which tracklist is: mario, zelda, megaman, castlevania, ducktales, FF, ... I honestly love those soundtracks, but it's been done to death.
I really think we would win to, among with classics, make some way for lesser know tunes as well.

For NES, castlevania 3 has the best ost imo.

Indeed, covering some mario overworld or the zelda theme is kind of obbligatory for a vgm album.
Didn't want to offend people here with my fresh take stuff, there's plenty of tabs here that are really original and beatifully arranged. It's totally possible to make cool arrangements form overheard tunes.

@Hakoria: I'm convinced we have to bring the newer scene on, and it doesn't even need to be indie. Major titles nowadays can have really good ost.
The good thing with indie is that the devellopers are much more aware about fan work on their games, and will probably give more recognition if done right.
