Guitar Frets

hey guys, i have an electric guitar and while i was cleaning it the other day i noticed that my frets/the wood material has these little holes in them, they sort of look like small cracks or fissures. i was wondering if this was normal or if the frets should have been completely sanded or smoothed out, anyone have any idea what i'm talking about?

and does anyone know a good cleaning kit to recommend as well? i had taken out all the strings to change them and cleaned the frets with q-tips xO

the frets really should planed well, but its not unheard of to see little fissures here and there. if it doesnt intervene with your action or picking, and if it doesnt cause any buzz, then it shouldnt be an issue i dont think. my old yamaha RGX121Z had some in it, and my dean has a couple, and theres no issue from it at all.

it isnt "normal" per se, but it isnt exactly unheard of either.

also, q-tips work just fine, thats what i always use for cleaning my frets. for the strings you can get this product called fast-fret or fast-glide/slide or something like that (im too lazy to get off my ass and look atm, and its basically just a little tight-knit brush with alcohol on it and a cotton rag to wipe it down when youve put it on the strings. amazing for acoustic, i cant think of a better must-have product for acoustic players, but it does the same job for electric as well.

dirt-cheap too, only like $15, give or take, and most music stores carry it, and if not, im sure it could be but on back-order.

hope that helped S&S!

thanks guys, yeah i was worried that the humidity or my sweaty fingers might have corroded the material, but i guess its supposed to be like that. wayfarer you use alcohol?? doesn't that mess up the finish or something?

also i found these and am going to buy

dunlop

and super glide

as far as the lemon oil and red oil with toothbrush i'll keep it mind but i think the stuff up above so far will do the trick

Yeah some woods are like that.

BTW, "fret" actually refers to the pieces of metal, not the wooden areas between the metal. So I think you may have confused your answerers :-)

If the metal has holes in it, you can take your guitar in for a setup. It'll happen to any guitar eventually.

Yeah I was worried once before about those little crack looking things. Seems pretty normal in rosewood fretboards. And I think that the dunlop lemon oil works really well.

Hey, I have the Dunlop lemon oil stuff, too! And rosewood fretboards.

Of course, I don't really know what I'm doing, but it seems pretty nice to me. Also, I like that Finger-Ease stuff.

Finger ease is really nice stuff, especially on guitars where the back of the neck isn't very smooth and hard to maneuver around.

i went bananas and got the lemon oiler, the fast fretter, a spray polish, and i'm ordering a can of spray ease. i tried the fast fret applier and it works really well, my fingers dont cling on the strings when i slide around on the fretboard, and it gives the strings a nice shine.

i haven't tried the other stuff yet because i'm thinking of bringing my guitar in for a set up, i tried fixing the intonation but i suck, so i'll have one of them expert guys do it and then give my guitar an all new lemoning/polishing afterwards hehe
