1. Robocop - The film of my childhood. Despite the cheesey name, this film combines everything that makes up a good movie imo. Emotional depth, good music, great acting, mature content, memorable characters and conversations, moral ambiguity, politics, economics and dark humour. Okay, so it's tongue-in-cheek and occasionally silly, but then it was made in the 80's. Needs a reboot. 2. Revolver - One of the few films I had to watch more than once. It's literally two films in one, but with the same story. The first is a fast-paced, stylish Snatch-like gangster movie with interweaving plotlines and sudden jumps that make it hard to keep up with. The second is a deep, spiritual exploration of the self, and an attack the way in which our thinking and lifestyles are governed by the immediate and ultimately worthless rewards of conformity. Linked to that is our inability to think outside the system that we have chosen to be governed by. Throw in loads of symbolism and you have one of the greatest, and worst reviewed, movies ever. It also features Erik Satie's Gnossienne No. 1 in the soundtrack :). 3. A Scanner Darkly - You'll be seeing a pattern now. Artistic, deep, disturbing, hard to follow and generally awesome. It seems to drag on a little at times, but that just adds to its uniqueness. The film was non-profit, so is one of the few that didn't have to appeal to mainstream audiences. 4. Alien - Amazing film. I generally find horrors cliche and uninteresting, but I'll make an exception for sci-fi horror. Everything is captured so perfectly - the fear, the sense of isolation, the surrealism you would expect from glimpsing the future, the sound effects and the overall maturity throughout. Unlike nearly all horrors, the alien remains 'alien' to the viewers right up until then end. You never gain a full glimpse, and you never learn it's weakness. The movie doesn't degenerate into a action thriller as you remain very much afraid and uncertain. Also, Ripley rocks. 5. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Yet another film with artistic intentions. Just like Alien, it really capture the sense of isolation you would feel in space. Challenging to watch, and very interesting. 6. Ghost in the Shell 1-3 - Not a big fan on anime generally, but these movies were fantastic. Dark, disturbing, deep, artistic, challenging etc. The sort of films that stay with you forever. 7. The Fellowship of the Ring - Any setback by the low age rating and fantasy-flufiness is offset by the stunning visuals, great directing and gorgeous soundtrack. Not a big fan of the book, I found this film was a big improvement. Besides the action and awesome visuals the film has surprisingly deep social and moral content. Another film of my childhood. 8. The Matrix (1999)- What nerd with a background in martial arts and pc games wouldn't like this? Beautiful film. Everything is well thought out, with so many layers of philosophy and symbolism that it's impossible to fully apprecriate in a single viewing. The choreography, while not especially realistic, flows so seemlessly and harmoniously that it's hard not to get a kick out of. 9. Shutter Island - I know it's controversial to add a recent film to this list, but there simply aren't enough good psycological thrillers around. In my opinion much better than Inception (which was also good), it's challenging to follow and tackles a lot of moral and social issues. The acting and overall presentation is second to none. 10. The Dark Knight - Dark, gritty, thrilling and ridiculously well made. Like other films on the list there exists in it a moral and social dimension that I love in films.

awesome effing list bhael! i considered adding the dark knight and shutter island to my list but the others just seem more fitting to my style of films. inception was an excellent film. DiCaprios latest movies have all been super kick ass, dude is a seriously good actor. blood diamond anyone? also, have you read the space odyssey novels? i still havent read the final odyssey, too damn hard to find, but the first three were excellent. why am i thinking a scanner darkly starred keanu reeves? i know i havent seen it, but i remember thinking i wanted to. @the matrix. see the animatrix?

8 honorable mentions: 1. The Road -- Stark, cruel, and sorrowful. viggo mortenson is more than aragorn son of arathorn favorite "bad" movie: Hobo with a Shotgun -- for three reasons: This quote being 1: "I'm gonna clean off this blood--WITH YOUR BLOOD!". 2: ricky from trailer park boys got his head ripped off. and 3: the hobo's hilarious spiel/analogy concerning bears. really though, this movie is so bad its fucking amazing, despite being the cheeziest grindhouse movie in creation.

Con Air is my guilty pleasure. It's on TV often and I always watch it for some reason :/ Don't really have a top 10. I'll just say Shawshank Redemption Oh, and Wayfaerer is the Road movie good? I enjoyed the book even though it's depressing as hell

it is actually REALLY good. i had no idea it WAS a book. its hands down the starkest, cruelest and most surreal post-apocalyptic movie out there. HIGHLY recommended. conair is a bit of a guilty for me also; probably cause the man who raised me used to watch it with me when i was really young on tv. i like it for nostalgia reasons, and some scenes were kinda cool i guess.

1. The Shawshank Redemption -
musenjiJoined: Feb 02 2010 |
1. The Shawshank Redemption - powerful, thoughtful, uplifting. Stephen King's finest achievement on film. 2. Braveheart - Epic. Grand scale deep story, beautiful landscapes and music, and some pretty awesome "gotcha" moments. 3. Good Will Hunting - Feel good inspirational, but not superficial. My favorite Robin Williams "dramatic" role. 4. Crossroads - a. it's about guitar. b. I don't normally pick up on such things, but the pacing of this movie/story is perfect. c. my favorite climactic scene in any movie, ever. 5. Lord of the Rings - if this counts as three, cool. Fellowship: they got the Balrog right. That's all I care about. Two Towers: the music. Return of the King: epic, epic battles. Honorable mention: the special features that come with the extended version DVDs. Actually I haven't really sorted out my top 20. Often I will say of a movie, "it's in my top 10" without specifying where--though that would usually mean it's not in my top three, otherwise I'd say that instead. It's not in my top ten, but honorable mention here: FFVII Advent Children: because it was awesome to see an FF game finally brought to life, after getting my hopes up for The Spirits Within BS.

i agree with some disagree with some. i thought spirits within was good, not great excatly, but nonetheless, i wouldnt classify it as BS though. AC was really good i think, just cause i got to see sephiroth and aeris and vincent fleshed out. also i stil say the green mile is sai kings finest achievement on film, but its all about preference eh? the LotR appendices were very interesting and would have made a great documentary otherwise. i think stephen king should consider fleshing out the dark tower series... he probably doesnt think the world will handle it

Yeah, I intentionally mirrored the form of your entry for Green Mile, but changing "haunting" to "uplifting", to emphasize the difference that makes me like SR more. Though, been a while since I've seen Green Mile. I don't remember if it has uplifting elements, or what the general theme is. (I take the theme of SR to be "hope keeps you free".)

Yup, I've read all the books. Very different to the film, but awesome. Arthur C. Clarke is easily my favourite sci-fi writer. Haha yeah it stars Keanu Reeves. You should definately watch it. The Animatrix is brilliant, but a very different film to The Matrix. I apprecriate the great story and stylishness, but imo lacks the power of The Matrix.

whats everyones favorite movies of all time, and the reason why (without giving anything away)
1. Edward Scissorhands -- The way the characters are presented, and the awkward little moments in the movie in dialogue and sequences; solidified as a classic for me.
2. AKIRA -- The ending. The mind-fucking, brain-twisting ending, and the series of events that led up to it; the execution of the plot and character couldnt have been more superb.
3. Fight Club -- Possibly the greatest mind-fuck film of all time, if not, at least among the greatest; one scene in particular always stuck with me--that wall with "MYSELF MYSELF MYSELF" written on it; just brilliant.
4. The Lovely Bones -- I have to avoid ranting. Beautifully written and developed, character building is EXTRAORDINARY; i was a little apprehensive at first with mark wahlberg playing the father, but he pulled it off astoundingly; it was the fathers depression that caused the man-tears to flow in this one.
5. Princess Mononoke -- Gorgeous script, built around mythology, drawn excellently, voice-overs where amazing, and the characters were fun to watch and think about even after the movie was over; one of the most underrated films of all time, even in anime standards.
6. Pan's Labyrinth -- The epitome of high fantasy; del toro paints a perfect picture of civil war spain, and an even more colorful picture with his scripting and directing; one of the greatest films of all time.
7. The Green Mile -- Powerful, throughtful and haunting. Stephen King's finest achievement in film.
8. The Orphanage -- THE creepiest film ive ever witnessed. another awesomely powerful and somewhat emotionally charged film from guillermo del toro; the ending is just breath-taking.
9. The Neverending Story -- what can I say? haha. the damn movie is just so much fun to watch time and time again; sure the soundtrack might be a little MEH, but the movie and the characters are memorable above and beyond some other movies in the genre.
10. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy -- Not JUST swords, shields, and magic, dwarves, elves and wizards. the morales presented in the movie about honor, loyalty, friendship, freedom, and hope, and just a few among the many reasons why these films are so breath-taking. the landscape is just grogeous (new zealand truly is middle-earth), the character casting could not have been better, and though many things were left out for reason of longevity, the storyline stuck fairly true to what was depicted in the novels. Tolkien would be proud of the world being envisioned here.
