Donkey Kong Spider capo tab

I've been trying to get the hang of using this thing, so to practice, I came up with a short arrangement of Mining Melancholy from Donkey Kong Country 2. This isn't submission since I highly doubt the way I tabbed it is practical and I think it's unlikely that many actually have this type of capo, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to share with you guys anyway.

If anyone does an appropriate capo and wants to give it a shot, check the score information for some explanations I guess.

It would help if I knew what kind of capo you were talking about.

The tab just seems to say capo at 5th fret. Do you have a picture or something?

Basically, it's a capo that allows you to cap each string individually. The song starts off with all of them clamped down on the 5th fret and somewhere in the middle you have to unclamp two strings and then reclamp them again eventually.

Auri is right! I have a crazy capo! It is an old-style ghetto Third Hand Capo, though, and not a new-fangled Spider Capo... but they're basically the same thing XD.

Your tab looks pretty good. There is no real universal way to represent some of this kind of stuff in a tab and it can get a little confusing sometimes. However, your tab is pretty much the same way that I set up my Third Hand/Spider capo tabs. Perhaps you could put the tuning, the fret that the capo is on, and the strings the capo uses at the beginning of the tab in a marker instead of having it contained in the score information. It kind of makes it easier to see/understand on first glance.

Here is an example of a tab that I made a long ass time ago mostly for clamping/unclamping exercise:
Third Hand Capo Song Tab

It is pretty bad, but I liked playing it XD. It uses a regular/partial capo in addition to a Third Hand capo. Again, it is old and I could probably clean it up a bit more to make it more presentable, so keep that in mind.

I also have a Donkey Kong Country tab that uses the Third Hand/Spider capo! But, I didn't fully complete it as I didn't think anyone on gametabs would ever play it anyways lol.

I've been thinking of writing up some sort of general guide of how to write/read tabs that use a Third Hand/Spider capo for a while. Now that someone else on Gametabs has one, it might be a good idea!

I've had this thing for like

I've had this thing for like a year and never really put it to much use. I figured it was time for me to stop slackin' lol. So far, I think it's really fun, but challenging at the same time.

But anyway, yeah I guess it would make more sense to have that information visible immediate as opposed to how I did it. I'll do it that way next time, well if I decide to actually submit songs that put a spider/third hand to use. I am interested in doing it, so we'll see how that goes.

Obviously, my tab isn't too demanding when it comes to clamps and unclamps, but it's a start. I plan on revisiting this one when I'm more comfortable and making it more like the actual song. I think the beginning would be heavy on percussion and harmonics or something. Or maybe I'm getting too far ahead of myself XD. I've got one in the works that makes more use clamps. I'll probably throw that one up here too when/if I finish it. For now I'll probably just give yours a try, then work my way up from that lol

Also, I think it's really cool that you've included a double clamp of sorts in the 7th and 8th measures. I think that the spider capo might lend itself a bit better in that regard with the way it has its little nubs. The third hand kinda requires a bit of a grip to turn the knobs effectively.

Anyways, I really like the way your arrangement sounds. I'm looking forward to any revised version in the future. Hopefully that happens sooner than later! XD

Hm I never would have known that the third hand would have an issue with simultaneous clamps lol. Maybe grease could act as a solution? I dunno. The double just happened to work out with the song's progression and I figured it wouldn't hurt since I'm somewhat comfortable with singles as a result of "Memories of the Future."

While the spider may be better suited for that kind of thing, it still has it's down sides. Since the nubs are thinner in comparison to the third hand, they shift over pretty easliy, so when reclamping they may not be aligned with the string properly. I'm sure that's a simple thing of control, but it does get frustrating. From pictures of the third hand, it doesn't look like that would be as much of a problem.

Yeah, grease is pretty much a must when I use my Third Hand Capo. The grease makes it almost effortless to turn the knobs, while without it they can be more than a little resistive.

I understand what you mean about the shifting. It happens with the Third Hand, too. However, although it doesn't happen very often, it is very annoying when it does lol.

Also, Memories of the Future is so awesome XD
