http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-SR506-Soundgear-6-String-515058-i1732... They just had a labor-day sale, so that'd have been under $500. Maybe try out some basses and wait until another sale? (There's sales all the time, so it's worth waiting around for them once you've picked out an instrument you like.) EDIT: Haha, Guitar Center just sent out an email saying "Your 15% off coupon code is extended". I think that means the LABOR15 code for 15% off will still work tomorrow.

You didn't say how many strings, so I just found a bass I like :-D My preference is actually for five strings, but I learned on four and then six before I got my five. Four is pretty good, though. How about one of these? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-SRX3EXQM1-4-String-Bass-w-Quilt-Maple...

I have two Fender Jazz

I have two Fender Jazz basses, a 4 and a 5. But they were both out of that price range, so I didn't mention them, hehe. I do love them XD There's the standard, which is passive and less flexible, but sounds really nice, and the deluxe, which is active, so it's more flexible tone-wise and more modern-sounding. There's MIA and MIM (made in America and Mexico) models, and the MIM ones are a bit cheaper but also sound different. You should also check out P (precision) basses. A lot of basses are styled after P or J basses, and you'll see basses with P-J pickups (one pickup's like a J-bass, the other's like a P-bass). I have a cheap Ibanez fretless with P-J soapbar pickups and it's alright. This was my first bass, and I really loved it: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-American-Standard-Jazz-Bass-Guitar-10... Except mine was a 2003 model. They had a button on the volume knob from 2003-2005 which puts the pickups in parallel and makes it sound a bit more like a P-bass. BTW, if you like a more expensive bass, you can get a nice one cheaper if you look at used basses.

Ah, one of the made in Mexico

Ah, one of the made in Mexico ones? I like those, though keep in mind they aren't the same thing as a normal P-bass. (You can try both to see if you can even tell the difference. I remember thinking the MIM was heavier. I think it uses different woods. Can't remember.) Anyway, yeah, you should definitely check those out. I think the Ibanezes are lighter than those, if that matters.
