Easier tabbing trick

Yo people, I have a tabbing trick that I want to share with you cuz it's surely gonna help you to tab some harder stuff.

It's so simple, I'm sure a lot people already came across this idea. But I'm sure this hint is still gonna be helpful to a lot of you folks. Anyway, here goes. You'll need a youtube video downloader and the VLC player. Download the vid your gonna tab from youtube (I presume it's gonna be from youtube) and open it in the VLC player.

Now, there's this little window in the right-down corner that says "1.00x". It is used to set the tempo at which the vid will be played. I'm sure you get where this is going now... When you get to a messy part that you just can't figure out, just slow down the vid and make it easier for yourself.

This is how I tab lonlonjp, per-olov, sungha jung etc... But be warned, it's still not gonna be easy and it'll still take quite some time to figure out some parts. And your still not gonna be 100% certain at some parts. This trick is just used to make the tabbing easier, not easy.

And one more thing. This method can be a pain in the ass if the video and sound are not well synchronized. Cuz the more you slow down the vid the more the video and sound will seem to go apart. But it's not such a big deal. Unless your tabbing lonlonjp's super mario 3 overworld. That was the most unsynchronized vid I've ever tabbed. XD But I still made it. Persistence rulz. :)

Anyway, I hope that this will help someone and that this is not something that EVERYBODY ALREADY knows and does. :P

I'd like to hear your opinions on this.

I'd like to expand on this a bit. What you posted above is the most useful and reliable method for tabbing pretty much anything, but I have a few other tools that I'd like to share. I usually tab out all parts to a song, and these programs help me when tabbing parts other than the lead. Don't expect magic with these tools, but they might help.

Get Lost, Singer: http://tonebytes.com/gls/ This is a VST plugin that is used to remove vocals from songs. The usefulness of this plugin varies a lot depending on how the song is mixed, but sometimes it can isolate rhythm (or even lead!) guitar parts very well. There's a good video here, which shows off an alternate method of vocal removal, as well as what's going on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioFGjlQKb1A

FL Studio/Edison: FL Studio comes with an audio editing tool called Edison, which can be used to slow down, filter, loop, and process an audio sample in a number of ways. It can calculate a song's tempo too. Most interesting to me though is the spectral view, which according to its help document, "shows time on the horizontal axis and frequency on the vertical axis. Brighter or more saturated colors (depending on the spectrum gradient options) represent louder frequencies."

Here's an example: http://i.imgur.com/bRwLH.jpg The spectrum is pretty clean in this song, but others can get pretty muddy. Regardless, this view shows a lot of useful data. It looks a lot like a MIDI piano roll. I put an arrow on one of the sustained notes. When you place your mouse cursor on this note, the frequency of the note is displayed in the hint bar at the top left. The program displays that it's a C note, 4th octave. So by mousing over each note, you can see definitively what it is. This helps with figuring out unusual chords or chords that aren't easy to hear, as well as bass lines and rhythms. Again, don't expect this tool to cleanly identify everything for you. Many songs appear washed out in color, but you might be able to pick out some useful data.

Edison is my primary tabbing tool because it's quick and easy to process the audio, and the spectral view gives a visual element to what I'm tabbing. Also because it's native to FL Studio, Edison's output can be easily sent in real time to the GLS plugin and other EQ's and filters to shape the audio to make it easier to hear parts I'm trying to tab. I think FL Studio's demo comes with full access to Edison, so try it out. If FL Studio is not your thing, I'm sure there are other programs that have similar features. I know that Audacity is a popular free program, maybe someone who knows more about it can comment on these features.

Ultimately you're going to have to rely on your ears to pick out the correct notes for tabbing, but these tools might make it a bit easier.

Whoa, I didn't even know tools like that existed... For me VLC is all I need cuz I just tab single fingerstyle guitar pieces, so there is just one line and nothing else. But I'm gonna tell my friend about this and I bet he's gonna be stunned cuz he's tabbing stuff where there's a whole band and he often has problems figuring out stuff like rhythm guitar or something in the background. Great advice mate, tnx.

You mean you give him notes and he gives you tabs? (yes, my musical term knowledge is poor :) Which formats can he read? Notes are usually in PDF, aren't they? Is it 100% accurate or does it have some mistakes? And what would happen if I'd give him a piano sheet? I'm really interested in this. And since it doesn't seem to be freeware I'd like to know what exactly it is. Or does "transcribe" mean to listen to a song a tab it out? God, I really need some basic musical lessons... XD Although, you said you never took any as well, so maybe you feel a bit of my pain. :) Anyway, it would be surreal if a program could tab a whole song, so I guess it's still about turning notes into tabs...

Transcribe! is the name of a program that was made for the process of transcribing! which means to write the song out, you can use it to make tabs or sheet music

im not sure why you're calling the program a him, but no you cant "give him notes" XD you use it on sound files, it supports many formats and it has many features for altering the song to make certain parts easier to hear

its pretty much what all you guys are describing, only it was specifically made for this purpose alone

Hahaha... Sorry, in my country the word for "program" is in masculine so I just forgot to switch over to English and referred to it as a "he". :P And holly crap, something like that actually exists? I've gotta try this out. Thank you guys for the recommendation and for having patience with my lack of musical (and lingual) knowledge. :D
