how do you do vibrato on a guitar? i thought that only worked on stuff like violins where the notes aren't sectioned and you can slide them...

You can sort of do it the same way as a violin, however the vibrato comes not from shortening the string, but tightening of it when you do it that way. Usually though the string is wiggled perpendicular to the neck, rather than parallel.
