Hey guys!

I've been doing a lot of work lately on moving to the new Discourse forum, and I'm getting really excited about it!

I wanna get a discussion going about it and get your thoughts on some things.

First off I just want to let you all know that:

  • You will be able to use your current account on the new forum
  • All old posts will be migrated over to the new forum Old posts won't be moved over, but will still be accessible in read-only form where they always have been.
  • Private message functionality is going to move to the new forum and old ones will NOT be moved over.
  • All profile information will be handled by the new forum eventually. I haven't figured out wether or not I'll be able to move everything over yet.

I also want to get feedback from you all that will answer the following questions:

  • How should we change the category structure?
  • What are some new ways we can leverage the new forum? I can tell you right now that we can move the Requests section over to it.

I'm wondering, will this new

I'm wondering, will this new forum a new place or will it be directly linked to gametabs main page the way it is now?

There will still be a link to it on the main page. But,it will be hosted on a separate subdomain. xxxxx.gametabs.net. Haven't decided what to go with yet.

Hmm, on thinking through the technical challenges a bit more, I think it's a better decision NOT to move old posts over. But they will still be accessible where they are now in read-only form.

I'd say it could be better to "simplify" categories, using just alphatical games, platforms, instruments and only most common tuning (standards/drops/downtune/some open tunings). Maybe random option for fun.
I feel like having too much categories is a bit confusing.
Also, I dont know if this will be possible, having a side-column on the right with small preview windows of the uploaded recordings might be nice :p

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, but I wanted to keep the scope of the discussion to just the forum in this thread.

All the other stuff will come later ;)

I think a chatbox on the front page could be nice. So anyone can just pop in without having to make a forum thread for small talk. Maybe even something like chatango.

Forum achievements and titles would be fun. Incentive to get people to post more and it's pretty video game-like. Might be too ambitious for day 1, though. But maybe after it's up and running smooth...

Not specifically Forum-related, but I always thought it would be neat to have tab recommendations from the mods and senior members of the site promoted on the front page or somewhere. The ability to share your whole favorites list with anyone via a link would be neat, too, and I think would be handy in the forum.

Also I hope there will still be a hyperlink maker in the new forum. I am lost without it lol.

I'll check it out tomorrow, I

I'll check it out tomorrow, I haven't had to test a website since getting my degree kind of a nice throw back and refresher. :)
