Tune Contest #71: The Wind Boss

Avaruussaha

A boss with such an original name, that everyone just refers to this fight as the Wind Boss.

So far, the group has made landfall on a floating island, and encountered the elder folk of the place, whom successfully persuaded the group to help the island remain levitating, as it has done for as long as anyone can remember.

To keep the island afloat, they take part in the ritual orchestrated by the elders, navigating downwards via a series of caverns, eventually stepping into the astral domain of the... What was the name again? Whatever, wind boss.

At this point, the local people escorting our group, chanting and humming in strange tongues, disappear. The real ritual, a test of power, has been initiated. There is only one direction available for the group, as strange winds push them on through a (fairly pointless and grindy) maze.

At the end, the heroes stand in the middle of a large, round platform. Winds of seemingly random strength and direction blow around the space, keeping everyone on their toes regarding balance and threathening to push them over the borders into vast emptiness. Soon after arriving at this place, the wind boss engages, thrilled at the sacrifice offered to him/her.

---

TL;DR: a boss fight theme.

Possible extra spice:
I imagine this being an annoying fight, thus resulting in many google hits for "wind boss". The amount of reloads required for this have made this tune iconic (in a bad or good way, hey, at least the fight is annoying, maybe the song is too) and well heard.

Hmm... This will be challenging. I've never tried to make up anything for a boss battle, but I'll try and come up with something.

Right now I'm picturing a Wind Elemental, affectionately nicknamed Whistlin' Willy lol, with a notoriously annoying attack pattern who likes to inflict Frozen status with his icy cold breath.

Now that I think about it, makes sense for the boss to be a Minotaur, since the heroes just emerged from a labyrinth. Maybe a Wind-wielding Minotaur Mage.

I'm still kinda stumped for tune ideas so I was watching Labyrinth for inspiration... But all I've figured out so far is that the boss definately sounds a lot like David Bowie lol

Alright I finished my entry! https://soundcloud.com/user-326023606/tsnohbdweis-wielder-of-wind

At first I tried to come up with a fast-paced boss theme, like the type Avaruussaha posted *thumbs up*, but I failed at that so I took a different approach. Whether it really works as a boss theme is up to Ava, though. I tried to make it windy by having the flutes and brass enter in the second half.

The idea behind this theme is that the boss is another test the heroes must pass before they will be allowed to meet the Wind Goddess. Their hearts were tested when they consented to the elves' plea for help, their minds were tested in the navigation of the maze, and now their power is being tested by a gatekeeper.

The boss, Tsnohbdweis: Wielder of Wind, takes the form of a minotaur who fights with a warhammer and wind magic (though he may not truly be as he seems). His role as the final gatekeeper is to probe the heroes for "impurities" through battle and to measure their true strength. He'll tell them they've been set up and sent to him as sacrifices (a lie) and fight dirty trying to antagonize them into fighting out of hatred, fear, and desperation.

I imagine it as an epic fight that has a higher meaning behind it that will become more apparent as the fight goes on. Whoever figures out how I came up with the name gets a cookie ;)

Thanks to BigHeadClan and Loyde_Sorrow for giving me advice with Reaper and Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra a while back :) I tried to put that to use this time around.

it's not the Chorus of Olivia Newton John's Physical is it BigHead? hehe

In all seriousness though, all the entries impressed me in one way or another so far - i've been playing Ys games lately so uptempo pieces come to mind on seeing the words 'wind boss'. Once i have a little play around with some of the composing software available i might even try my hand at an entry, but that won't be for this contest - for now i'm content to sit back and enjoy all your creations :)

I gave myself an afternoon to do a song. Sorry for some questionable mixing. I've felt a bit bad not being involved lately, but such is life.

Her hair began to swirl wildly. What was once a fresh and rejuvenating breeze, was now as a cavity, souring the sweetness she took for granted. The wind cawed and snarled, causing her body to feel heavy and cumbersome. She heard a voice rumbling like a hurricane hidden in the gales. This felt different. This felt dangerous.

Battle Against The Wind God Njord

Here we are

Alright, here we are! I asked myself what says/represents wind (excluding actual wind, of course). The anser I arrived upon was a Wind Quartet. I didn't just want to a typical battle theme, although that would have been a bit fun to do. That's not to say that I didn't have fun doing this Wind Quartet battle theme. I did. It's something different and I've never heard a game use a Wind Quartet for a battle. Maybe a String Quartet... but anyway, here we are.

I couldn't really decide whether or not to add some percussion (other than the Wind Gong) to it to spice things up a wee bit. Maybe it does need some more... I dunno. Maybe a shaker or something... Anyway, yeah.

Oh, the mix isn't really all that good. The dynamics are dirty (yes, I just said that) and some other problems... I'd fix it, but I gotta long day coming and I need to rest to prepare for it! I really should have gotten this out of the way days ago instead of at the last minute. Yay procrastination! xD

Now to listen to the entries I didn't listen to!

Alright, here we are! Creature of Storm

This is pretty much what I got by thinking of how a high-energy wind theme would sound combined with elements I would use in a boss theme. Add some strings and woodwind instruments and a drumbeat, and a lighter 'calm of the storm' like segment in the middle, and bake until golden brown.

Honestly I could have fleshed this out a little more, but I didn't want to back out so close to the end, so I did what I could to pump this out on time. Some more practice with my techniques and software, and I should be making awesome things in no time! But for now, my best attempt, and while it could be better, I think it came out alright.

I present you with the ingenious rating method for this time:

Mystical windy method

I summoned my inner artist and let the flow of each track guide the plastic pen on my drawing tablet, painting the vivid image in my mind for each entry.

The final reviewing process was done with the dood-... paintings themselves.

david_cookie and his windy boss encounter
[Lower right] What a fierce mechanical bird god. The ferocious cry it emits from time to time is sure to get some reactions from it's opponents.

Avaruussaha, Gust disqualified. Did not make it to the canvas either.

MechaKrauser, Tsnohbdweis, Wielder of Wind
[Middle left] Kinda strikes more as a pre-battle hype tune, in this case the picture clearly depicts a brave hero challenging strong winds to get to the fated fight.

tiger child, A Gusty Encounter
[Up left corner] I managed to portray the stage of this battle. You clearly have to hop on some pillars all the time not to be blown away by wind, because it just makes sense. What I couldn't see, though, was the opponent. Or maybe I just cant draw, that cant be, right?

jit, Whistle Guy
[Up right corner] Creepy, and the bleeding wind eye is creepy. It is also slowly raining ash, even though the winds are blowing hard all around.

Big Head Clan, Battle Against The Wind God Njord
[Up middle] This Nord guy just appears out of nowhere as a nordic viking tornado being, dangerous stuff is flying all around and keeping out of harms way is most what this battle is about. The pattern is quite predictable though, so it is easy to cope.

Lloyde_Sorrow, Battling The Wind Boss
[Dead center] ...I'm sorry. This CLEARLY is a card battle against the wind boss, and not just any card battle, but our favorite Match Match. And theres lots of them, for more repeated loops of the great theme that goes with it.

Shrinx, Creature of Storm
[Down, middleish] Have a look at that! I think I got a whole story of the battle in just two minutes. Keep the big baddie occupied while someone climbs a funky ladder to do something with the orb of windy power.

--
So, who is the winner?
It is Shrinx, Creature of Storm. For painting the clearest image of a whole encounter in my mind.

Lloyde gets a honorary mention because of the Match Match match. I did say 'annoying fight', and the described card challenge bossfight is truly such a bad idea that I can't leave it without a mention.

Hopefully someone is satisfied with my approach regarding this. Shrinx, yer next!

Congratulations, Shrinx and a good job to all who entered!
Thanks for the honorary mention! I did have an annoying and repetitive fight in my mind while composing the first couple of days. I didn't imagine it being Match Match though haha!
