I know its probably a bad idea... But I'm starting with XIII for Xbox 360. I think I am going to play them backwards. I think it will give me an interesting perspective ; ) |
Sounds like a great idea...

Sounds like a great idea... Just do yourself a favor.... Don't get too caught up with XI |
nah, they're all their own

nah, they're all their own games. iirc only X had a sequel in regard to story with X-2 and you didn't have to play one in order to enjoy the other. Maybe one of the titles between 1 and 5 was a sequel... I don't remember, been too long. Other than that you can't really go wrong starting anywhere in the line. Just know what to expect if you start with the new title and decide you want to play the older ones after. I had friends who started the series with VII (the first title for the ps after the jump from nintendo) who refused to play the older games because of the "poor" graphics; even though VI and IV had amazingly great stories. Favorite titles in order: VI, VIII, VII, XII, IV, IX, X, the rest. Going to need to go pick XIII up here soon >< |

If you start with VI every FF you play will be not that good, start with VII, XII, or V which are the not so good FF.

I guess it depends on your preference (gameplay vs storytelling) and your resistance to 16bit graphics. :P |

I have a hard time playing the PSX ones because they're so ugly, with their jaggy low poly count, crappy textures and models etc., but the pixel art has held up pretty well over the years I think. The NES ones look dated (though I like them anyway), but the SNES ones are nice to look at IMO. I wish games didn't all go 3D before the hardware was capable of doing it properly :-(

I think FFX would be an ideal starting point, the story in engrossing, music is phenomenal, and it's not too much of a graphic or development setback from newer titles(it's arguable better in many ways). Plus it's available everywhere for cheap and it's my personal favorite :-) |
You should definitely play

I started with 4 (or orginially II in North America) for the SNES and that is still my favourite one. Truth be told, I have only played 1-7 and so I would not be able to tell you how 8-12 are. Yeah, I'm a big loser and got Final Fantasy 13. That game is hardly a Final Fantasy but the battle system is pretty fun... and the graphics are nice to look at. But yeah, to actually answer the question, I would start with any of them. I picked 4 at random and still love the Final Fantasies I have played. Except 7. Yep. |

If your looking for an in-depth and compelling story. GO TACTICS. The whole battle system is unique compared to the rest of the series and the plot is just epic. Otherwise, You want a love story that ends happy. Go 8 You want a love story that will end up making you sad. Go 10 You want the coolest world map theme ever. Go 6 You want a medieval setting with higher end graphics(for its time). Go 9 You want the game that is mostly talked about. Go 7 You want a game that just came out. Go 13 |

No Flaming!
OK, So here is where I think this all went wrong and I think maybe some of you will agree with me...
Started out on the (NES) with games such as Zelda, Mario, and Megaman.
Then...
I bought a (Sega Genesis)
Friends: "YOU GOTTA PLAY FINAL FANTASY!"
Then I bought a (Nintendo 64)
Friends: "YOU GOTTA PLAY FINAL FANTASY!!"
Then I bought a (Playstation 2)
Friends: "YOU GOTTA PLAY FINAL FANTASY!!!"
And by that time the Final Fantasy series was already at like X...
So then I'm thinking to myself... "Why in the hell would anybody start a game series on like the 10th game.
Anyways what I'm trying to get to here is.
What game Should I start on?
Why should I play FF?
Ive already played Chrono Trigger and I'm pretty sure FF cant beat that game. or can it?
I really wanna play Final Fantasy games because I think I am missing out on some great Music on the site here and I wanna be able to hear the music and get attached to it before I start to play it.
