Tune Contest 65 ~Reflective Dungeon~

tiger child

Joined: May 31 2012

you've found your way to a village in a remote part of the world map. it is a small and peaceful place. the folk who live there are earthy and caring. children are playing in the streets. tall tales are told as truths about the surrounding mountains and woods to the north and the east. but all is forgotten when you look to the west, towards the great greenish blue sea. it takes you immediately. the mountains disappear as do their stories, the journey you've had so far is nearly forgotten. there is a calm in the water that draws you to it. an old man standing near a dock says something to you, that you brush aside as the whisperings of someone aged and ignored.

"there is a secret in the water," he says - neither a warning or a dare.

you walk to the edge of the dock, and look down. the water is simultaneously warm and welcoming, and hollow and eerie. you look back to the old man. he watches you silently, only giving way to a shy grin. you look back to the water and lower your head. there is only a small amount of movement in the sea as it pushes always to the land. you lean further down, take a deep breath - pushing out your cheeks - and push your face into your mirrored mug in the water.

you open your eyes, and you're under the water looking back at yourself in the sky. pockets of air still clenched in your mouth. you let go. you can breathe. you sit up, as the world seems to revolve around you until you are upright. you turn around as you stand. everything moves slower, with great purpose. the water hinders nothing. you turn back to see your reflection, only to discover its absence.

there is no going back. something brought you here for a reason. to this reflection of yourself in the sea. a melancholy dungeon to traverse within yourself. to find something hidden within your soul. hidden even from you.

track length should meet, or preferably exceed 1:30 whether it loops or not.

submission deadline - JANUARY 26

Jk... So the theme is.... melancholy... dungeon?
Like Aquatic ambiance or Stickerbrush symphony from Donkey Kong ? Or Ice Caverns in "most rpg's" or a forest one ?

there is an air of mystery to interpret what the dungeon is exactly and what you're searching for. i can push more specifics, but i like the idea of y'all filling in some details. but, if i wanted to lay more information out, the idea is that it is a dungeon within the main character soul/mind/subconscious that manifests itself within an enchanted sea that they are drawn into by their reflection, where something hides that he/she must delve into in order to progress the story. a key item, perhaps. anything, really.

just take it and run!

Got a few cool little riffs/chord picking going but it's been a bit of a struggle to mesh them all together.
I'm fairly confident I'll have something to submit though :-)

Hey guys.
It's not really about this contest but i have a friend who works on a game.
Made with RPG Maker Vx. He is kinda "famous" in the french making community (he won 3 years in a row the "Alex d'Or" for "Best Characters".
Anyway he would like to have an original main theme for his game.
And maybe take the melody to make 2-3 different songs, like the same melody but for a battle theme or a love song etc...
Anyway he is not in a rush so you can take the time.
If someone is interested let me know, i'll give you a way to join him :)
Thanks !

I get exactly where you're coming from with this theme and I dig it :)

Maybe I can somewhat simplify it for those who can't really grasp the imagery --- Imagine a personal quest that magically takes place underwater, where you can breath and explore a cave/dungeon that presents answers or questions for the main character to ponder for their personal growth. You can think of it as actually happening or maybe just being a dream, basically leaving it up to the individual to determine what experience happens in the cave/dungeon.

Hope that helped a little :-)

i dont know that the

i dont know that the complexity of the theme really deters people. i think it's just more circumstantial. i mean, the last theme was simply FLIGHT and it went on for a thousand years, and still only managed what, 3 participants?

and even if we see our tracks as bad or whatever it is, i think it's still good to do it! it's an exercise in creating and practicing skills. and that part is never bad.

also, if you want, you can let your friend know i'd be interested. it's been a slog getting things going since i moved in here, so it could be the right thing to snap me out of this haze.

I think you painted a good picture of an occurrence that I see happening in a game.
I'm reminded of Chrono Cross, FFVII and Secret of Mana.
But in a nutshell it reminds me of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke Skywalker went into that tree on Dagobah where he fought Darth Vader but it was essentially himself. It presented deep things for him to ponder or understand.
All in all I think it's a great theme and it's really just the lack of active members to participate in any tune contest.
