They really do. If you enjoy music at all I highly recommend you go out and by yourself a pair of halfway decent headphones.

I got a new pair of headphones for Christmas. They're Sennhesier HD 280 Pro's (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-manufacturer/sennheiser/sennheiser-hd-...). I freakin love them. They're completely closed and circumaural, which a lot of people frown upon because closed headphones have a reputation for not being as true to the sound as open pairs. The good thing about closed though is the isolation you get when you have them on. Nothing comes in, nothing comes out. And these particular headphones do a great job of giving you that isolation and remaining as true to the sound as possible.
Prior to this I was using an extremely craptacular pair of headphones which were probably not even worth 5 bucks, and the difference is so huge I now question what I've been doing with my life for the past few years. I'm hearing things in music that I've listed to for years that I've never heard before. I can't even imagine what it'd be like if I had a decent sound system, and didn't listen to music off my laptop all the time.
Moral of the story - if you have crappy headphones now.. GO GET GOOD ONES IMMEDIATELY!
