Well, I'm not hearing what you hear, but new strings usually make some weird noises that might be identified as "rattling"-sounds. So I guess you shouldn't worry unless it doesn't go away after a week or two. |

It is hard to say without any more details. You didn't even say what kind of guitar, so this might not apply. If this is fret buzz, the neck could have too little relief now. Relief is how far the neck bends away from the strings--a little bit is normal. After putting a new set of strings on a guitar, you should do basic setup or have a music shop do it. On an electric that's: 1. Adjusting the truss rod until you have proper relief, If the new strings are a different kind, or if you've never had setup done on your guitar, you'll want to do all of the above. Don't adjust the truss rod yourself unless you know what you are doing. (You can learn about it online, it's not that scary. Just don't break your guitar!)

Oh, my bad. It's an electric guitar I picked up from Wal Mart (Rocker Tool is the brand I think) with the extra set of strings that came with it. The string actually buzzes loudest when I hit it open, but it's still pretty loud when I hold a fret. And the buzzing is even MORE distorted when I plug it into the amp (it buzzes even when not plugged into an amp). I'm not sure what you mean by having setup done on my guitar. Anyways, I broke the string trying to fix it, so I'm going to go get another E 6th before I try re-stringing. And considering I messed up just re-strining, I probably won't be adjusting the truss rod myself, but I'll look into the action and whatnot. Thanks. |

Hey man. I had exactly the same problem after my first(botched) restringing, I had ended up fiddling with the bridge and lowered it, that's what caused the rattling. Moving it back up, away from the body a tiny-fraction sorted it for me. Don't know if you have a adjustable bridge, but I'd give it a careful shot before forking out for a setup at your local (Even if you mess it up a little, charge will be the same to get it sorted out, usually). |

Setup is just adjusting those various things. And yeah if you don't want to try adjusting the truss rod, try raising the bridge a little. (That's assuming it's buzzing against the fret.) That sucks breaking a string, but at least strings are cheap :-)

Well, the rattling has become a LOT quieter since I actually finished the re-stringing. I'm thinking it might be my guitar adjusting. As for the bridge...I don't know if it's adjustable, but I did end up removing one of the pieces of it at one point (by "piece" I mean the part the string sits in) when trying to remove the past-mentioned broken string. I put it back, but maybe I did it wrong? I know there is this little spring on the screw that may not be getting the same tension now. Still, seems good for the most part right now. Thanks for the help peoples ^_^ |

I WAS going to write a reply with help, but TrangOul said it pretty well. I would also recommend checking the strings to make sure they're aligned correctly. If the string is a bit off on the truss rod or the bridge, it might do that.

Also if you go from one gage string to another you may have to add some relief as well |

Good rule of thumb with adjusting your truss rod, never more than 2 full turns of key. Most typically work there way down/up with string gauges by small increments so should help keep you safe. @TrangOul Oh it's been a while sir good to see you still lurk :P |
Now that you mention it...

I just changed my guitar strings for the first time, and everything went through properly and it's back in tune and whatnot, but my strings buzz/rattle. I'm sure it has something to do with having just re-strung, but any suggestions on what exactly the problem is?
