Some things that have bothered me

Hey, I've been around on this site for some time, and there's some issues I found over the years. While obviously it's not perfect, we could certainly strive to be. But enough with the cheesiness; let's just get down to the issues.

1. On the requests section, there are way too many threads, and many of them are unanswered. Even the ones that have been fulfilled are still there. While it isn't exactly a bad thing, I think requests that are completed already should be deleted to make more space for other unanswered threads. And it allows other threads to move up a space too.

2. There should be three subsections to the requests: a Midi and a Mp3 one. And one more for completed requests, for people who may still want to discuss the tab and all. From personal experience, midi files are clearly the easiest to work with, and it's just a hassle to have all the midi and mp3 provided threads all grouped up. What I'm suggesting is that people who provide either music file should post in their own individual subsection to ease the tabber's life.

3. There should be some collaboration work on request threads backed by mp3's. Many times I have found myself almost tabbing mp3s and giving up halfway because it got too bothersome. I'm willing to split the work with someone. But there lies another issue that the other tabber might be better/worse than me at tabbing. But even so, a mediocre completed tab is better than no tab at all. For example, I could be tabbing a song that's around 2 minutes and split the song evenly with another person. I mean, most songs have a repeating theme, but we're talking about video game/anime music, and most of the time it's different throughout the song, until it loops itself.

Now, I'm not trying to be a downer or anything, but those are some of the things that bothered me on the website. I hope this comes off as constructive criticism for you admins. Also, other people may have discussed about this already, but I'd just like to say it again.

I always appreciate and encourage criticism and feedback, either positive or negative, so thanks for posting this. It's like when a teacher asks if the class understands, and she gets nothing but blank stares. How will she know if she's done a good job teaching? Never be afraid to say what you think.

That being said, a reform of the requests section has been discussed and I will be doing something about it. I like your suggestions except for number 2. I don't think anyone's gonna go through the trouble of taking requests for MIDI or MP3 files. It should the responsibility of the requester to provide a MIDI or MP3 file. Which is why in the new system that I've been thinking about, a link to some kind of sound file will be required. Requests will also be able to be 'flagged' as either fulfilled or unfulfilled, which satisfies your first suggestion. As for your third suggestion, I think the new system I'm thinking about will encourage collaboration, but I dunno. I can't force people to do anything. The Works in Progress section should be used for collaboration, but no one seems to be interested in it much.

About the 2nd suggestion... I'm suggesting that the requesters themselves post their requests in their own subsections, based on what music file they have of the requested song. I've seen many people having mp3-backed threads, but most of the time they aren't answered. Or, a moderator for the request section could move them into their own subsections (if they're willing to do so).

And yeah, I see the problem with collab work. It's a pity though, we could finish so many requests if we just did... My suggestion was that it should be encouraged as in, "I'll try tabbing this song out, but is anyone willing to split the work with me?" and not be forced upon. Theoretically (at least in my mind ;) ) it works, only if people are willing to work with each other.

Well I could categorize requests by what type of music file they have. Could be like MIDI, MP3 and Other. Then you'd be able to get a list of requests with just MIDIs, or just MP3s, etc. Check out the discussion in this thread for more details about the new request system I'm thinking about.

As for the collaboration, the only way I can see people really working together is if the process was incentivized. Perhaps if there was some sort of reward people could get for fulfilling a request... hmm.... (damn that's a great idea) .....
