Do you still play RPGs?

archard

Maybe it's just because I'm no longer 13 years old with no responsibilities, but it seems like I've haven't had a true RPG experience in soooo long. Back in the day, my friends and I used to have epic Final Fantasy and Zelda sessions. We would just spend all weekend staying at each other's houses with a new FF game and just soak it all in. It was a great time to be fully immersed in a great RPG, not knowing what to expect next, and just letting your imagination flow with the storyline. It was back then that the music from those games became engraved into my mind and is basically the reason this site exists. Man, those were the days. I'm getting so nostalgic :ugeek:

Do you still play RPGs? And if not, tell us some of your fond memories from when you did.

I occasionally play rpgs but quickly lose interest or just don't have the time. Perhaps the quality of modern rpgs is wanting, but I don't find myself drawn into the strong narrative focus of jrpgs or the complex game mechanics of american rpgs. I get bored of even the classics, but I suppose this is what happens when you feel almost guilty of wasting time playing video games.

I really only play RPG's relating to my faves from when I was a kid. I play Fire Emblem, Baldur's Gate, and Pokemon (inb4 12yr olds thinking they're cool and adult by flaming it). They stopped making Baldur's Gate games before I started playing, but I've played through mods and the like for going on four years. Excellent series, check it out. Gamestop will sell copies of all three games in a bundle for $10. Fire Emblem is great in general, no explanation needed. I'm getting tired of defending pokemon, but it goes deeper than nostalgia. I like simple RPG's, and Pokemon is simple and fun.

These days I play in fact more RPGs than I used to. My mission is first of all to beat all FF's until 9, that is why I'm busy playing them. Lately I also played Wild Arms 5, the Boktai Series and Chrono Chross for the heck of it. RPG is my favourite genre, because of their great storylines and nice tunes, which ofcourse depends on what game you are playing.

The problem is that most RPGs coming out now aren't focusing on what we used to love in RPGs....story! So many RPGs coming out focus on graphics and how much stuff they can cram onto the disk, rather than giving us an emotional connection to the characters. I would love to see companys come out with another 2d RPG with a great story line rather than another 3d flashy game with a story line that makes me feel like I wasted the last 20 hours of my life.

Atukomanga is right, They don't make rpg's like they used too.
Of course that wasn't my "era". I'm 14 now. But I've always gone to my uncles house, and dust off the old nes/snes and play them! I used to be forced to do that cuz he had nothing else. And I would tell him to get a newer system. But after awhile, I got attached to the story line and it would just pull on you! One of the games I remember playing, and having a great time on, was that mario rpg game!
But speaking of mario, the paper mario game for the Gcube was pretty fun too!

I still play RPGs, but as I get older (21 in november ;) ), I tend to focus more on strategy and dominating the enemies (if not school and work) than the story. I picked up Suikoden V and Chrono Cross (on sale at Amazon for $20) to play over the summer while I have some free time, and both have been pretty enjoyable...not on the level I used to enjoy as a kid, but enough so that I can look up at the clock after three unexpected hours and say "really?!"

I think a huge part of the problem is most of the good RPGs were Square-based

And then square went all *Splat*
and PS3 is LOL
and well... make the math :(

I too miss good RPG's

The one's that made you feel awesome doing the same thing over and over again :P

I still play my old GOOD RPG's, yes. I'm replaying Super Mario RPG right now actually, and after that going straight to FF3/6. What I really want to find a copy of is Legend of Legaia though, it was probably my favorite RPG but I never had the money to buy it :P.

Now though all company's do is say, "lets make a game with some kick ass graphics and people will buy it without any plausible story at all! Even for an imaginary world!" it's starting to tick me off. I'd rather see a new 2d game with a great story and 16 bit characters :P then a crappy new rpg...

What did you guys think of the last few Final Fantasies? FFX-2, FFXI and FFXII, basically. I wasn't impressed by either of them. I prefer good old fashioned turn based battles.

I was never a fan of RPGs, the only ones I can say I've played and enjoyed are Earthbound, Paper Mario, Paper Mario TTYD, Chrono Trigger, and Tales of Symphonia.

I'm about to begin Final Fantasy VI (III?) for the SNES. Got it all set up on my Dreamcast as finding a cart would prove difficult.

I LOVE RPG's!
I used to have those Zelda sessions when I was younger, playing the living daylight out of Ocarina of Time with my friends... Nostalgica... Of course, I still hang around with one of my friends from back then, and we STILL play the living daylight out of Zelda from time to time :P

Nowadays I don't play that much... I experimented a little with free RPG's such as Heroes Online and some other japanese anime-style grindfest excuse of a game..

I'm considering installing Morrowind again... With mods that's the best game I've played since Ocarina of Time.

I never was a huge RPG fan, though I was a bigger one when I was younger. The only RPGs I ever really played were Poke'mon games and Zelda games. Recently, I played Final Fantasy XII, which I thought was sweet.

The big problem with me is lasting appeal. I hate most turn-based RPGs because they eventually amount to grinding to continue the story, which is really boring for me. That killed Poke'mon for me; endless grinding, and I'm going to pay an extra 30$ for a game that hasn't changed since Poke'mon Gold? No thanks. That's why I like FFXII so much-It had great pacing, I never needed to grind for more than a couple of hours, and the battle system was turn-based, but the way it was handled made it seem real-time.

It takes something really new to make an RPG good for me. KOTOR, for example, was an awesome game because it was the first game I had played with a good/evil system. Dark Cloud 2 had grinding elements, but had so many interesting things in it (Spheda, Georama, Photography, etc.) that it became my favorite RPG of all time to this day. Twilight Princess, however, bored the crap out of me because it just seemed like Ocarina of Time with some gimmicks slapped on. Plus, it was too easy. That's another thing-I like skill in my RPGs. I don't like the kind of game where you can grind until you get strong enough to just blow your way through everything and take out the final boss in a short amount of time.

First off I'd like to say "Hi, I'm new" :geek:

I've noticed that pre-FFX I played through a load of JRPGs and enjoyed most of em while pretty much hating western RPGs with the exception of Diablo. Nowadays, I fall in love with western games like Oblivion, Fable, KOTOR, and Mass Effect while enthusiasm for traditional JRPGs drops. The last JRPG that I enjoyed (probably because it played like a great 16-bit RPG with a beautiful cinematic approach) was Lost Odyssey. But before Lost Odyssey came along, it was Final Fantasy X. That's quite a few years without a good JRPG for me, especially after spending all my allowance living through the SNES era on cartridge after cartridge.

This leads me to think western-made RPGs are really making leaps and bounds in all departments (the stories are now very appealing to me and the gameplay feels great) while JRPGs feel like they are at a stand-still (developers obviously feel the urge to push graphics to the limit but now forget about character development and story)

In the end I still skim through gaming sites and try to feel hopeful for the upcoming big ones like Final Fantasy XIII and White Knight Story

P.S.

Speaking of Lost Odyssey, I would lovelovelovelovelove to see more tabs =P It's my favorite OST by Uematsu

Speaking of the Japanese market, has anyone else noticed that American's don't seem to really try to go after RPGs like the Japanese do? Closest we get are GTA games, which is about as close to an RPG as an apple is to a particle accelerator.
I think someone like Neversoft or Rockstar...hell, I'd even like to see EA give it a try, just to see what we get. could be funny...could be pathetic...could be awesome...never know unless someone tries. If no one tries it, I may be the first American to shoot for it. Got an epic story and gameplay fleshed out...just need one important thing...programmers. Music and graphics are taken care of. lol

XIII is Square's last chance to get me to play Final Fantasy, and they technically get two tries with VersusXIII. I haven't enjoyed playing a FF game since VII, with VIII through 12 (excluding 11) having a list of complaints on them. (everything from the draw system, horrible stories, epic girliness, etc.) If Square can't put forth a decent FF game here, I'm never buying another FF, and I'll be cautious on the next KH (though I loved the last 2). They're already pissing me off with this Xbox trend they are going on. (still petitioning the "Down with Microsoft" campaign)

Ah well...worst case scenario, the only RPG I play is Pokemon, which does provide several months of entertainment.

I'll still play those. Definitely. I'm currently on Wind Waker, as video games are too expensive nowadays for me to buy new ones, so I'm catching up on all the titles I missed out on once my hobby slowed down circa 2003.

I still play RPGs...like the Suikoden and BOF series. Though, I don't like what SquareEnix is doing lately: releasing ports of the same game to the DS or other systems. I like the ports, as they are improved and all, but I'd like to try something new for a change. Really, I remember a time when there was a new FF every 2-3 years, or at least a sequel to some series (BoF, Suikoden, Tales series). It seems to be slowing down though.

Oh, and I wouldn't be so psyched out about that count-down. It's just another re-release of Chrono Trigger for the DS... just great... The only port I want to see is of FF VI. That would be so awesome.

Re: Do you still play RPGs?

The main reason I'm psyched for the countdown is that it can bring Chrono Trigger into a wider audience. No one I know IRL has ever played CT and hardly any own a SNES, the price of a cart on eBay runs for $100+, making this one of the only ways to legally own the game for many people.

PS1 release doesn't count.

Well, I guess I can find time to play RPGs a bit, but with college, I certainly can't play as many games as I used to. Well, I play the occasional RPG, but its gotta be a GOOD one. I'm talking about storyline, which is really the problem with modern RPGs. Fire Emblem is always pretty good, and I'm waiting for TOS: Dawn of the New World. A few others too, but, all in all, I don't play as many RPGs as I used to.

I agree with all thats been said. Loved all FF's from 6 to 9. FFX i wasn't too crash hot on it(not to say it wasn't a decent game, though certainly not the best), then XI was online I think? Bleh. Online RPG's are rediculous, I learnt that pretty quickly. Then I had a go at XII still with an open mind (liked the idea it was set in FFTactics homeland) and got to the point, very early on, where I was given a task to deliver something from point A to point B.

I suddenly had a moment of disillusionment that this was just like actually being a delivery boy. The only storyline up until that point was pretty weak, a bit of politics I felt no connection with and an annoying kid with (gasp) an outrageous ambition to own an airship to which he would have to defy the odds to get. It all seemed so formulaic and lame that I havent been able to give it another go since.

Still I'm confident they can make at least 1 decent RPG for new gen.

Of course I do. And Im 25. I understand how most gamers feel when they say, FF use to be this and that, but times have changed unfortunately. And we have to move with the times. Unforunately; story, game-play and developing characters aren't gonna be in "style" Because SE has followed what the masses want. Which is basically eye-candy. Much like Hollywood has corrupted our youth with big money, anorexia and the "I could get away with anything cause my daddy/mommy/family is rich" mentality, The videogame world has lowered its standards and basically its spewing out crap much like the film industry. Dont get me started with making everyone happy, with the various crowds wanting whichever thing this way or that way, too much of this and too much of that. Someone is always gonna be disappointed, so to really get over all this, I tend to stay out of gaming politics. And just remember the good ole days, where pulling 3-4 all-nighters in a row with tons of coffee and junk food, playing FF, CT, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Legaia, Valkyrie Profile, Etc with various friends or family and ONE day hoping, a company gets serious and starts pumping out games worth playing for and dying for. In the end its all about what made you happy or what still does make you happy. I like to see SE experimenting with new things, but if they dont work out, go back to the drawing boards. As far as the recent FF's of our time, X, X-2, XI, XII, I personally have nothing against them. I enjoyed them very much.

I, sadly, don't play many RPG's. But I used to play them more a while ago. I think it's because no new RPG's that are good have come out lately. The only one is Fallout 3 which I have and am obsessing over because it actually is great. ASAP I'm going to play ALL the FF's, but I need to get FF origins and need to get my DS charger to beat the 3rd one, then I have to go on to america's 2nd (number 4? Don't remember anymore). But I just don't have the resources to get them. So I guess the actual answer is, no I don't play as much as I used to and I'm 16.

My theory is that RPGs ara all the same nowadays. Back in the snes era we had some spine-chilling moments in quite a few games. Nowadays, it seems that most people will eat corny dialogue and teenage boys with illusions of grandeur saving the world right up.
I thought FFXII was pretty rad... but yeah, it's been hard to find equivalents to moments such as the Magus battle or the Celes opera.

Yeah i still do Play RPG Games,But to me it's not the same as it used to be,

I remember the first rpg i played was dragon awrrior for the nes,
the first real game That got me into RPGS truly was Ocarina of time for the N64
i know many people would not consider it a rpg but i do,

Also there are a few rpgs out on the next gen consoles but they are far in between,
Say for the 360 i found these games to be great and bring the rpg feelings back,

The Last Remnant,Lost odyssey,Infinate undiscovery,and a few others,

for the wii there isnt to much, but i enjoy opoona it was a good game and i am sure there are a few others,

But i know what archard is saying its like when a new RPG cComes out there is a Big Hype then when you get it,Your Like man,This is nothing like back in the day when Zelda 64 or FF7 Came out!

But i want to Know who agrees with me I think The Playstation 1 Had some of the Best RPGS Out of any Console to date, i think it is the RPG King!

Older RPGs seem way better than the newer ones and i think its cause most of the newer ones are the same cliche story line. Like "The world is on the brink of destruction and only a select few can save it." that kinda thing, ya know? I think part of it is because developers are trying to get in the best visuals as possible as well so sometimes it leaves the story lacking. But every now and then you can find a game that draws you in and you dont mind lvling because you wanna find out what happens next. I think the era of groundbreaking RPGs has passed though because after Kingdom Hearts 2 came out and i beat it i havnt found a game that keeps me wanting to play.

I totally agree, RPGs are my favourite genre, but I'm having so much trouble playing them nowadays. Oblivion was very fun, but I barely considered that an RPG, the storyline was just plain terrible. I've played Lost Odyssey on 360, which was pretty good, but nowhere near the level of the old FFs.

I always figured it might simply have to do with nostalgia, but it's so much deeper. I recently tore through Chrono Trigger on the DS, being absolutely addicted to it; RPGs are just in a little bit of a recession. Their core qualities are weak, and there has not been a single incredible one on any of the major consoles so far this gen (excluding DS, and some WRPGS; Fallout 3 is supposed to be incredible, but again... in my opinion, it's an RPG in name only).

I'm playing Tales of Vesperia right now, it's pretty good so far, but like archard said, I liked the good old turn based system, nothing beats it.

Portable RPGs are still pretty strong. Devil Survivor, the Pokemons, the remakes of FF3 and 4 (and 5 and 6, holy crap), Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, etc.

I'm still hoping for an RPG resurgence, soon. I dearly hope it will never go the way of the adventure game. But with the masses getting stupider and stupider... Who knows.

All Rpg are just a caricature of all i've seen before. But it's my opinion. The last one i have fully played was Star Ocean 3 on PS2 because of his battle system. It's not that I feel like I'm too old to be playing video games, it's just that I start feeling like I'm wasting time if I play more than like 30 minutes at a time. Back when I didn't really think much about the future and responsibilities I could spend hours and hours playing. But lately, I start to wonder if it wouldn't be time better spent doing something else. I guess it really is no different than say reading a book or watching tv, but for some odd reason it FEELS different. If that makes any sense.

I can't even use the excuse that games are not as good as they used to be. I go back and have tried to play through old favorites and I just don't have the heart for them anymore. Sad really. :/

Well, I guess I've played my fair share of RPG's back when I was younger (Like 12-14, I'm 16 now) it was full of Morrowind and Zelda, if you count MMORPG's too, well those were a big part in it.

Lately, I delved into the Final Fantasy series, I finish IV about a month ago and I'm trying to finish VI now (epic game). Since VI has been pretty much been all I've been playing for about a month I think I'm gonna take a break from RPG's before I get sick of them.

Also, I agree, all recent RPG's seem to be eye candy games with weak story.
..RPGs need more steam punk. :p

I dont think we should see RPGs as a waste of time or not. I think its more about weather or not we enjoy them. If you can enjoy a game then its not a waste of time since it makes you happy. Its more like a way to pass the time. Iunno its hard to explain. Like say Xenogears for me is my favorite game ever because of the deep plot and the music and all and i consider it better than watching any movie or reading any book. I thoroughly enjoy it except for the Rock Paper Scissors game at the begining. That bastard can rot in hell lol. But anyways even if someone told me that it was a waste of time i would just shrug it off (and possibly deliver a kick to the nuts) Its all on how much you enjoy it is what i believe.
