What string weight do you use?

After having used light strings for my entire life I decided to try some heavier strings today (D'Addario) and I love them :!:

It seems like I don't have to put as much force into the strings to achieve the same intensity level as I did with light strings. The sound is much more vibrant and clear IMO. Maybe it's just my particular guitar though. What kind of strings do you use?

Wow, one major drawback of heavier strings is that it's way harder on your fingers. After playing with them for a few days my fingers now feel like they did when I first started out. Gonna have to build up calluses again.

I'm threw a set of D'Addario .45-.105's on my Warwick bass at the weekend and they are far too bright! Although it means I'm experimenting more with plucking and picking positions to get a better sound, so maybe it's not entirely bad.

I could do with some suggestions for a better set though!

Well they aren't cheap and I'm not a bassist but I'd say check some warm chromes,

I take back what I said about heavier weighted strings... they're best left up to electric guitars. I've been using them for over a month and my fingers still haven't really adjusted to them. They hurt after playing for a long time... something that never happened with light strings. Also, it's damn near impossible to hold down some barre chords without straining your wrist and causing all kinds of fret buzz. I do not recommend anything other than light strings for finger picking acoustic guitar players.

What about fingerpicking electric? :)

I generally keep my bass and treble strings as separate types to add definition, so right now I have med flatwound in the treble and light roundwound on the bass on my SG and the reverse on my Strat. I really like this setup, but the time is coming to try some others as well.

Is there such a thing as medium weight?

They shouldn't have named it the Wii, it's the butt of too many stupid jokes. They should've named it the Perfect Nintendo Entertainment System(PNES).

I like to use Ernie Ball .12 gauge, but since the place I usually get them is out of stock I've been rocking .11s. The .12s are great for dropped tunings (anything below 1 step). Mabye I'm being paranoid but the pinch harmonics from the .12s sound amazing O.O. I can do .9s and 10.s, almost anything really...they all sound good to me.

The strings I talked about in the original post were medium. Like I said, they sound really full and vibrant, but the tension in them is much higher and they kill your fingers and make you press down so hard on barre chords. I wouldn't recommend them for fingerpicking.

I use medium Elixer stings. Usually Polyweb, but I'll also use Nanoweb strings. Elixer's strings are rust proof, and the coating makes it feel like silk. Also, their medium strings seem and look like heavy, regular, non-rust proof stings. But since they are like silk, they won't kill your fingers. They are also perfect for fingerpicking on electric since they won't pull on your right hand finders like the regular stings would, IMO.

I get Elixer strings for about $10 or $12 a pack, but they usually last about 6 months each for me, so its worth it, IMO.

Actually, that 6 months is about where I cut them off and put new ones on. They start to wear out and the coating gets all shaggy, making it sound kinda crappy. But if you don't mind that, they would probably last longer.

Six month's a long time, I wouldn't mind changing string strings only once or twice a year =D
