It's not that different from playing guitar. Unless you insist on finger picking, slapping and whatnot.

I'd recommend to play the same songs you already played on guitar with your bass. You already know how it sounds...I guess you would learn bass quicker that way. I'd also recommend to play "normal" music (not videogame-tabs) for now, so you get into the style the bass has in the kind of music you want to play.

By the way, I have a similar problem:
Someone offered me to play the keyboard in his band, but...well, I'm not able to read notes, although I tried so many times, but something always prevents me from doing that. I'm sure the problem is just that I always play every song by ear, and every book about learning to play keyboard has popular songs only, and I always play them by ear instead of looking at the notes. I just look at them, but I automatically play it by ear. :/
I mean, I can play things like the FF6 Boss Theme without knowing a single note, but I have no alternative than learning a song by ear or with the Guitar Pro piano, and if I forget a song I have to learn it all over, because I have no way of writing it down...

If you are actually going to stick with playing bass, I suggest you learn to finger pick and slap. Personally slap bass is my favorite style to listen to, alas Les Claypool, Bootsy Collins. The top four strings are the same notes as the top four strings on a guitar, if tuned to standard. Alot of bands these days the bassist just follows the guitar (Slipknot comes to mind), but try to make some original bass lines that you can actually distinguish from a guitar.
