My parents destroyed everything.

My parents are the definition of "Mormon". Today my parents went through my writings and didnt like what they read. I had written a couple lyrics for some songs I have been working on along with a book i was writing. They didnt like it because of some of the "Dialog" of my stuff. So what do they do they throw it out. 156 pages of book, music, and screenplays are now gone.

My question is do parents have the right to destroy artistic careers? Was it fair that they can throw away my stuff because of language? I have to restart all over again on all my work.

I dont know but i think its fucked up that they did that.

dude, it's just mormons stuff. I'm betting you live in Utah or Idaho? Somewhere in the mormon corridor. Having grown up in a mormon society I think I can safely say that Mormons aren't bastions of open mindedness/artistic thinking. I can't speak of other's people's parents because I only dealt with Mormon parents. I know many friends whose parents were freaks like that. My parents were thankfully cool. Sadly I can't think of anything to say other than when you're 18 you wont have to take it anymore. I know some would say talk to them, but honestly I've had too many friends in the same situation to think that talking will make any difference. They've made up their minds and nothing you can say or do will change it. I would suggest though that try to expand in the area they'll allow you to grow. Anyone can write what they want, nothing special about that. But someone that can do something special within set rules, that's something. There'll be plenty of time to do what you want later. It's little consolation but try to use it as a time to grow your talent.

Also they can't destroy something that's virtual. You're on the internet. Use it.

A teacher of mine told me about a similar situation he was in a few months ago. He told me about how his super cute new kitten spent an entire night playing with the power cable to his external hardrive. It shorted or something, and fried the drive. He had pictures of his <1 year old daughter and all of his music and all of his writing from 1998-2005. He is a heavy writer, so this was a LOT of lost data. After the initial feeling of wanting to strangle his cat, he realized that what happened to him wasn't a bad thing. He can recover the pictues of his daughter from his parents, he has most of his music on CD or vinyl, and finally, he realized he needed his old writing gone anyway. This experience helped him change his style, and he started writing differently. So you just need to try and find positive features in all situations in life. Your parents' destroying your stuff could be a sign that you should try doing something new, or different.

I would be no doubt angry, but I'd keep writing and lock it away. Let your voice be heard.

Someday.

What kind of Books do your parents read?...do they have a particular favorite?
Burn it
Burn it because of its 'Dialogue'
if they dont read then the Telly will do just as well

The caustic "taste-of-your-own-medicine" idea doesn't really work outside of Home Alone or whatever. That's really a bad idea.

I'm saving my judgement in the matter until I've seen some of the "dialog." Care to share any of the lyrics or writings they've deemed offensive? Not that I'm taking your parent's side or anything, and I think destroying so much work is a little overboard, but if I want to be fair I'd have to know what it was they read they didn't like. I don't know you, I don't know anything about you, but judging from the amount of blood sprayed across your sig and avatar, I'm curious as to the content of your work. With only half of the story, however, I can't give you an opinion one way or the other.

I say you get them real bad. Or at least have a lock on your door like me. My mom did the same to me, but she got some of my favorite CDs and DVDs too. They weren't pornos or have any explicit dialogue on them, but she didn't like them. She didn't trash them like your parents did with you. So the next day, I robbed her of some of her favorite CDs and DVDs and then I bought a lock for my bedroom door and two keys for the lock. So when she got home, I surprised her with the fact her CDs and DVDs were gone and that I locked them in my room along with my key. But I didn't tell her that I had another key. I told her she would get them when I got my stuff back. She tried but she couldn't open my lock. So a few days went by, and she finally caved in. She gave me my stuff and wondered how she was gonna get her stuff back. I pulled out the other key and unlocked my door. She was so surprised and so mad that I led her on like that. But it was too late to do anything about it since I had my stuff. So since then, she could never get in my room, especially since I bought two more locks on my door and I put a metal plate on the door to prevent her from burning the door down. What I'm saying is, revenge can either be the best or worst option. It depends on how much planning you put into it. It worked for me because I'm smart like that!

You had best be trolling. That is probably the worst thing he can do at this point.

it seemed like he was just writing for catharsis, and better in ink than blood.

Or more importantly, why are they writing lyrics like that? Because they get paid to. If there is any creative member of those bands, they are being repressed, because if they just keep recycling the same bullshit, they keep making money. All those bands, they're pop bands. If their record sells well and the tour makes millions, then they call it a day in a few years. Someday, their fans will look back and say, "Shit. I can NOT believe I listened to this. Well, it was popular at the time..." I'm not saying you're suicidal, I just think your influences are giving you the wrong idea of what you should be writing about.
