Question about the history of the site

I was looking through the "All tabs" section to see what the first few tabs added to the site were like, and I noticed that near that end point, there are about 12 pages of tabs added "5 years 39 weeks ago". Were all these tabs moved from an earlier site, some previous incarnation of gametabs.net? Very few tabs for the first year or so, then just this big explosion; thought it was quite weird that so many were added in the same week.

Dude that is exactly the kind of question I would ask if I came across that info. I AM NOW ON TEAM "LET'S FIGURE THIS OUT"

And then I realized that the chord progression from Chrono Cross's Another World is the same progression as the chorus from Peace of Mind by Boston, and life was never quite the same.

was it because when those tabs were being published they were being accidentally marked as created by the tab editor instead of the tab submitter? i do wonder now what kind of mysterious secrets this site holds in the past...

I think he moved them from an older system. I'm not sure, but maybe he'll see this thread and respond. (I don't know how often he checks GT, though.)

You can see some other quirks with some really old tabs. A lot of them didn't have creators, which I think was also the result of being added on some older system originally. At some point, I think archard subsumed almost all the authorless tabs into the "archard" account to fix that, so you can see tabs like this one which are under his account but done by someone else. (I think maybe a third of his 450 tabs are like that.) So old stuff is definitely wonky.

Having a look at the site through the "Wayback Machine" - going back to 5 years and 39 weeks ago - there's a notice that says "I am currently in the process of moving the site over to a content management system that can handle this type of site.".

http://web.archive.org/web/20071006132447/http://www.gametabs.net/

That seems to make some sense, but it wouldn't explain why there are a number of tabs with dates *before* then - surely if all the tabs are moved to this new system at roughly the same time, why are some being shown as added a year beforehand? Maybe he had to manually input the original date of submission then got fed up after the first few and set them all to the current date?

Also, it's interesting to see how there are a few tabbers that have stayed with this site for such a long time, like Kabukibear and Calebelijah. I'm pretty sure I visited the site a handful of times back then, back before the current logo at least (the latest layout seemingly being implemented around June 2008 which nobody wanted to know but I thought I'd mention anyway), but didn't use it nearly as regularly as today.

On a related note, does anyone know what happened to Stamen47? I'm sure I heard about it some time ago, but I can't remember. I like how his tabs require your fingers to bend space and time around them :) And does archard still actually run the site, or has someone else taken over? His latest tab was 4 years ago and doesn't post in the forum any more (last post being November 2012).

Sorry, this certain kind of history really interests me for some reason :D Not sure if there's a name for it.

Ash took over the site. He doesn't show up much, though. Archard doesn't either, but maybe you could email him and tell him to show up and answer Important Questions xD

I was around in 2008 but not 2007, so I missed the beginning days, but I got to see the site with different colors and layouts :-)

There probably is. I mean, even Pornography Historian exists.

AWWWWWWWW MAN. I'm sorry I didn't notice this earlier. I love reminiscing about the history of this site and would love to answer any questions you have about it. To answer the one's already asked in this thread: yes, I originally made the site using WordPress in July 2006. When the site started getting bigger, WP couldn't handle it anymore, so I needed to move to a better CMS. I chose Drupal and made the switch in October 2007 I believe. That does explain why so many of the tabs have that timestamp on them. And, when I used WordPress there was no way to assign a user to any particular tab, so when I moved everything over to Drupal I subsumed all the userless tabs like auri guessed. Also, I used to be obsessed with the details of this site, so I went through a big chunk of them one day and started manually changing the submission date to match the actual submission date written manually on the tab for some of the tabs. I didn't do all of them though. I have no idea what happened to Stamen.

Sorry I'm not so active around here these days, but my life is such that I wouldn't have any time to do any real work on the site anyway. I started this site right after I graduated high school and maintained it firstly out of pure passion but also because the ad revenue I got went a looooooong way through helping me pay for my college expenses. Towards the end of college my life started getting epically busy and I decided I needed to sell the site to someone else in December 2011. GT was such a huge part of my life for those 5 years, but now my life is just completely different than it was in those days. I genuinely look back on those days with such fondness and I'm so grateful to everyone who volunteered to make this site what it has become, even though I think it's certainly seen better days.

<3 you all

Thanks, Archard, for creating this site. There's a smattering of video game tabs on other sites around the web but gametabs.net is on a whole other level. I do play other stuff on guitar from time to time but you just can't beat fingerstyle arrangements of video game songs! To be honest though, when someone asks what sort of guitar I play, it's not an easy one to explain...

Another question I have: do you still play guitar, even though you've left the site? Do you look at the tabs like a regular user now that you don't have to run things anymore?

You said the site has "seen better days", I'm assuming you mean it's not as active now as it once was? When was the site most active, do you think? Even though I've only been regularly using the site for the past few years, I kinda miss those days as well, if that even makes sense... Like how someone can look back at the 50s and wish they'd been born in that era because it seemed so cool! There aren't so many "superstar" tabbers these days, like Stamen47 or Kabukibear, prolific tabbers that have made lots of really well-received tabs. Or maybe there are but they just don't tab for games that I like :P

I can't think of any other questions right now but I'm certain there are many other fascinating facets of the site's history I'd love to hear about!

Probably 09-12, for the golden era. In early 2011 the tune contests started, and in early 2012 we had enough good fingerstyle regs that there was a performance competition on a somewhat regular basis, and the pieces to perform were *hella* difficult.

But the posting of good tabs went to well before that, of course. I'm just guessing about 09 honestly, I got here in early 2010.

I think 2010 was the golden age. That's when everyone was active and we had the awesome IRC channel going. I think the rate of tab growth was the highest at that point too but who knows.

Can someone explain what the shoutbox was? It's not something I think I've ever seen. I may have visited the site while the feature was still around but not for long enough to actually use it.

2010 was the year I finished high school. I didn't practise guitar nearly enough at that time so I wasn't regularly visiting the site. Damn...

Hmm a shout-box would be a nice personally I think the site is far more active then it actually appears, lots of lurkers and people passing through that don't post or do submissions.

That or maybe it's just a lag between generations? Most of the original members are in late 20-30s so life goes on right?
