Mine is an F chord.

But since the F chord is so hard to perform I just tune my other guitar to open F. What a lovely tuning/chord.

That would be G. Well, I think officially G has an open b string rather than that 3, but I've always learned to play it with the 3. I think it sounds a lot better that way.

There is in fact no official way of playing various chords. As long as the "right" notes in a chord is there, it is all a matter of how you like to "voice" the chord. For example, in a G chord the notes G,B,D have to be present.

e|-3 -> G
b|-3 -> D
g|-0 -> G
d|-0 -> D
a|-2 -> B
e|-3 -> G

Is one way of playing a G :)

e|-3 -> G
b|-0 -> B
g|-0 -> G
d|-0 -> D
a|-2 -> B
e|-3 -> G

Is another way :)

And one of my favorites

e|-7 --> B
b|-8 --> G
g|-7 --> D
d|-9 --> B
a|-10 -> G
e|-X

There are of course many more variations that you can do when you want to make a G chord :)

Please do. I have a very good basic understanding of what makes up a chord. Like how the spacing between the triads determines whether its major or minor. And inversions and stuff like that. It's just when you get into stuff like Cadd11+majSus that I get lost.

Re: Favorite chord?

Well, chords are almost exclusively built around scales. When you see a number, it's the scale degree (usually).
Since you know basic chords (Major, Minor, Augmented and Diminished, right?) I'm just going to go with some of the more fun stuff.
First, when you see the marker "sus" that means it's a suspended chord, meaning either the third or the fifth has been removed and replaced with a passing tone; the second or the fourth.
For example: C is C E G, Csus2 can be C D G or C D E, and Csus4 can be C F G or C E F.
When you see 7, that just means you add in a note a seventh above the root
This is based on intervals (more accurately, scales), C Major 7 (AKA CM7, CMaj7) is C E G B, C Dominant 7 (AKA C7, CMm7; will only appear in the scale in which the chord is the fifth step) is C E G Bb, C minor 7 (c7, cmin7) is C Eb G Bb, C half-diminished 7 (really awkward one to notate in shorthand; most common way is CØ7) is C Eb Gb Bb, and C fully diminished 7 (AKA C°7, Cdim7) is C Eb Gb Bbb. There are more, and the naming schemes of the diminished sevenths can (and do) vary, but that's enough on sevenths for now.
For things like 11 and 9, well, that's just when you add the eleventh or ninth scale degree (sort of). A C9 is C E G B D, though often the fifth will be omitted because otherwise the C can be overpowered and sound more like a Gadd4add6/C chord, but yeah. You'll notice that the D can be found in the suspended C chords - no. This D is more than an octave away from the C (hence the 9) and the chord is also complete, so it's not suspended. Usually add is used when the chord is otherwise completed. C E G B D will often be called CM7add9 because you have a complete CM7, and you're throwing in the ninth. C9 could imply just a C with a D an octave higher.

Okay, this is becoming really long, I hope I helped you a bit, but if you have any questions I'll answer them. Really, chords are based entirely on scales, and you'll notice that a lot of chords can have different names... It depends on the scale in which they appear, the harmonic progression, etc. That's kind of like why earlier I said I really have no favourite solo chord. I'm actually stuck on a piece of theory homework right now because of the multiple names problem (is it a ii7 in the second inversion or a iv in the first inversion with passing tones, because neither often leads into the root position VI according to the rules of classical harmonic progression I've been given, but root position VI is regularly followed by either of them. Haha, theory.)
