Hmm just did some quick snooping and I actually can't find anything on Link since late sept. She's pretty much dropped off the face of the internet.

Some of the admins would be able to pull up her IP and see if she's been on the site since then, but at that point... it's just kinda creepy. lol

after reading vulpes' article on super loud noises, I realized that was exactly what my mix sounded like. xD it's more dynamic now, and only fuzz-blasts your face in the last chorus. if you like rockin' your sub, it should be niice and smooth, but surprisingly powerful considering its higher-than-average register. :P

It's unclear to me. Are you asking someone to convert lower bitrate MP3s to 320kbit/s? If so, don't do that. It'll just decrease quality.

If you want 320kbit/s MP3s, make sure you encode them from the original WAV file. (Never convert an MP3 to WAV and then back to MP3.)

I didn't knew that ^^

I wish all the tracks were in 320 but many files that i got from users were in 192 or 256, but they still sound good :)

Most people probably have them recorded in a higher-bit rate format, it's just easier to upload as
Mp3's and such.

But yeah trying to convert from low -> high never works out very well for audio/video.

Yep! MP3 adds quantization

auriplane

Joined: Sep 06 2008

Yep! MP3 adds quantization noise, which throws away information. Once it's thrown away, you can't get it back. All you can do is throw away more information.

When you first encode to MP3, you try to add as much of the noise below masking thresholds as possible. That means adding noise where it's physically impossible to hear it--you literally cannot hear most of the noise that the MP3 encoding process adds, at least at a reasonable bitrate. But the second time you encode to MP3, odds are that some of the masking thresholds have already been exceeded, so this time most of the noise you add will be audible, and the file will noticeably degrade.

If you re-encode a 192kbit/s MP3 to 320kbit/s, the audio will likely sound worse. But 320kbit/s is pretty good, so it might end up sounding about the same. The important thing is, it will never sound better.

Does someone has any experience at mastering an album or somthing ?
I can do it with Audacity but i'm affraid it will low the quality of the sound (import tracks to audacity => normalize => export as .WAV => WAV. to MP3 320kbs).

Bandcamp is the "place to be", but idk if it's possible to put free stuffs on it ?
Any ideas?

And i'll make a video trailer for the album with the links to the album, to gametabs and to the youtube channel. If you agree i'll send the video to you guys to put it on your private channels (if you are ok) to make this known :)

Hash, can you give me any response to the stuff I tried with your songs? xD ... x___x
I have to know, if there went something wrong^____^

(arhg, I mean they were .mp3 when I imported them, so I did it the wrong way in this aspect... ;P)

---

Everything that has to be mastered / maximized to it's max. fitting loudness-level, should be sent as the original raw .WAV, then there won’t be any losses (except overdoing the compression to death xD) until the .wav will be finally converted to 320kb/s .mp3 and/or FLAC.
(For the conversion to .mp3 I use a free program called “Audiograbber”)
(...if you import any mp3 for that, it will get worse, as Auri said^^)

Here we have to coordinate.
It shouldn’t make any sense to master something that has already been mastered^^
[For example: Otto/Link’s stuff is already mastered and until we cannot get in contact with her, we won’t be able to get the raw file]

A “perfect” result should be hard for beginners like us^^ All tracks are different and have been recorded with different equipment, settings, bitrates...
And even if it's all pushed up to the same, tracks may sound less loud, differ with each other, that's an individual impression...

---
Don’t know if there’s a way to publish it for free... is someone there at bandcamp and can tell?

I just recorded the other 7 guitar tracks within a relatively short time span. Now all I need is bass and the accordion tracks that Careless will be recording.

I pretty much always wait until the last minute when things have a deadline for some reason. But once I got the drums done, the rest has been much easier.

The song is a secret for now, but I didn't see it on the list of tracks being covered, so we shouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes.

It's not a problem to cover the same song as someone else (we got 2 covers for some songs) ! I can't wait to hear it ^^ Im happy and Careless and you are making a song for this project :) As you are a "name" in this community (and DoD too :) it gives credit to this album thing =)

I have some ideas to make some seasonale albums and i hope people here would participate as they did with this on =)
Don't want to be a new DoD or OCR but making albums, or projects together give more life to a community.

I hope for the next album (the theme would be designed by a vote), if there is one, more people will join (Auriplane ? :D) and that we will do collabs ! The only collab for this one is DSheltonator (Czethros11) and i for the Sandy Badlands cover :(
... And now Careless-Juja ^_^

@Vulpes, by mastering, i mean i don't want people to put the volum up for a song and then the next one would be way too loud ^^

Indeed, that's what I meant too^^
Jeah, no one wants to get blast away during the beginning of the next track xD
["Oh, that was nice > next song, oh, it's a bit silent *turninglouder* > next song - BOOM --->>> deaf" ] xD

But if something has already been mastered, it's normally turned up to that border near 0db.
Within the perception of the listener there will always be any slightly difference in loudness, depending on the songs itself. Even Link has this in her bandcamp-stuff from, 2011 :)
So the point is only to reduce the extremes between the songs :) A 100%-perfectly adaption won't be possible for amateurs like us^^

"The piece with the larger dynamic range seems quieter than the with a very low dynamic range of highly compressed"

That's why I asked about your BestofStuff... are the differences between the tracks very huge to you?^^

I found a program that claims to analyze the "felt loudness" and can adapt all to each other, but I tested it a moment ago and there are still loudness-jumps between the tracks... but they went all extremely more silent xD

@vulpes thanks, man. i used a weird tone effect that's similar to wah but makes different vowel sounds at different positions. that description makes it sound really weird xD, basically it has some sweet spots for creating a stand-out tone without going too over the top. it helped prolong some of those super long notes, too haha. (though i wish the notes just before the end of the chorus stretched all the way through. should have tapped on the compressor. :/) your Jenova-Absolute is pretty damn epic! really dig that thiiick Mark of a Traitor, too. it sounds good all big and mean like that!

I saw earlier in the thread that somebody mentioned Temple of the Ancients. Well, Careless and I actually did cover that one a few years ago. The problem is that it's not strictly an FFVII cover, because it changes into the Phanton Forest from FFVI about 2/3rds of the way through (and I think the FFVI portion of our cover is better).

But anyway, if you guys never heard it, here it is:

With your approval i'll use it for the album !
I can make a fade out at 2.40 to keep only the ff7 part (but as the 2 songs fit really well i don't mind let that FF6 part)

Yeah, feel free to use it. I would say keep the FFVI part because it's the best part of the song. I just didn't know if it would be acceptable since it's not strictly an FFVII cover.

I'll see if I can come up with anything this month for DoD. Birth of a God would've been a good DoD song since it's just long enough to qualify, but this deadline was sooner than DoD's.
