Icewind Dale II's my all round favourite. Immersive, compelling, reactive and challenging. The audio and visuals are also excellent.

Sadly the game went under the radar on release, and it's probably the least played of all decent rpgs. I have no idea why this is.

Sorry,I should state the reasons when started this topic.Well the reasons are amazing or top graphics at that time when the game was released, engaging storyline and most unique gaming experience i ever had since i became gamer. And to the people who say skyrim is the best game ever made, sorry but no.This game is the worst and most boring ES game ever made by Bethesda.Monotonous dungeons and boring quests are seriously a no no for an adventure game.

It's so boring that it breached 5 million users logged in on steam, so repetitive that the lowest score from a notable critic it received was an 88%, so "the worst" that it won overall Game of the Year from IGN, SpikeTV, and Gamespot. I agree wholeheartedly. I'm alright if you think it's bad, but don't go with that "worst and most boring" malarkey :P

But I might agree with those Monkey Islanders. Unique gameplay and just an entirely enjoyable experience.

To Crazymoogle i only said that for Elder Scrolls games only made by bethesda and theres only 5.I know the comment i made is harsh but I played morrowind and oblivion and you know what i totally love with both games. As a matter of fact i actually replay both games for at least three times.Trust me when i got skyrim i am so excited i played it immediately. But the big let down when i am playing the game betrayed my initial feelings about skyrim.I even tried to find anything good to talk about skyrim.

Alright, I can understand that. I recognize that my response was abrasive, sorry about that. ^_^; I never played Morrowind sadly, but I know that the first thing I was comparing Skyrim to was Oblivion, so I definitely appreciate your point.

Yeah! The first two were really good. Tales, too.

Ron Gilbert has said he still wants to make a real MI3, but he also said it doesn't sound likely that he'll ever be able to :-(

For that matter, I'd like to play a real Star Control 3, but I guess that'll never happen either.

Actually I found Skyrim quite entertaining when I first played it, but got bored after two weeks. The main story is weak, the factions are too small and the whole dragonborn/shout thing detracts from the sense of achievement you'd get without it. Afterall, when everyone else is handicapped (limited to one crappy shout or none) where's the fun in killing? Actually I don't dig the whole 'chosen one' stuff anyway - achievements should be made on equal ground for them to be called achievements imo.

However, something compelled me to start playing it again and I'm really enjoying it :O. Been playing it for a week in a very different manner. I'm a rogue archetype who uses a lot of speech and illusion, thief skills, archery and backstabbing. I'm just playing it casually this time, just doing one quest at a time and avoiding the factions. It seems every dungeon more or less has it's own story, and there's quite a few easter eggs scattered throughout the game. I think the problem with Skyrim was that on release it had lots of fans who were new to this type of game and rpgs in general, lots of kids impressed by the dragons and lots of electric guitarists fus ro dahring all over the place. In other words the game was overrated into some kind of 'best thing ever made ever ever', so cynics like myself reacted against it like true hipsters.

Man ok that is some stupid shit. Lol is not pay to win at all. Some of the top players in the solo queue ladder have never spent money on the game.

There's a reason LoL is the biggest online game right now. Also Dota 2 is garbage. It's filled with broken game design, an awful ui, and is generally an unplayable pile of shit. You can try to defend it by saying it's in beta but we both know it's not going to change substantially before release. I promise you Dota 2 is never going to amount to shit and it's not because it's too deep for casual players, it's because the people designing it learned nothing from Dota 1 and kept all the shitty parts in it.

There is no advantage LoL players who pay can access that players who don't pay can't also access. The only thing you can buy with real money that other players cant have is skins which are cosmetic. (for the record I've spent money on the game twice only for skins, I refuse to spend any money on actual game shit and I've unlocked pretty much everything in the game with in game money)

Also Dota 2 has no system to deal with leavers or griefers so the community is a pile of shit too.

It's pretty simple if a game is pay to win then paying should

1)make you win automatically or give some significant advantage over other players

or

2)Allow access to content that non-paying players cannot access (which should lead to #1)

I can tell you that when I queue up aside from skins on champions there is no way to tell who has spent money on the game and who has not. The people who spend money are not hitting harder or really doing any better in the games. The competitive community is very alive and there isn't a sense that people are spending oodles of money on the game with the hopes of coming out on top.

This kind of bullshit is perpetuated by people who have never played league and hate it because of its admittedly shitty community or by people who just hate it for the same reason people hated CoD and WoW. (They're popular games and I can't carve out an identity for myself as a "hardcore gamer" playing low-brow games that everyone knows about hurr hurr)

"Pricing, aside from us saying "let's have the game be free forever and never sell power" has largely been an after thought because our view is that if we create awesome, then our players will reward us. That has held true." -Mark Merril President of Riot Games (makers of LoL)

Are there Monkey Island/Star Control games/editions that would work on Windows 7? I find that a lot of my older games like Warcraft I and Lords of the Realm don't like to work on my computer and I'm guessing that it's the old software doesn't always agree with the new.

On that note, Lords of the Realm II is also an awesome candidate for best PC game for me. It's a strategy game which forces you to cope with natural events, crop sickness, droughts, and other similar disasters while you still have to fend off other Lords and Ladies. Something about it always resonated more with me than it did with Civilization or something.

YES! Star Control 2 has been open sourced as the Ur-Quan Masters. It is now free to play :-D

For Monkey Island, you can get the Special Edition versions of 1 and 2 for Windows. Or, get the old versions and play them with SCUMMVM (which is free, though the games aren't). For 3 (Curse), I don't think you can buy new copies anywhere, but you could find it somewhere (eBay?) and play it on Windows using SCUMMVM.

I don't know about 4 (Escape), but that game was skippable anyway.

Tales of Monkey Island is a modern game and works just fine on Windows. That one's good, too.

It is hard to decide the best pc game ever made...I mean...what is "best"?
I can say that a game is the best 'cause it has good graphics, or a good story, or a good soundtrack, etc...
I'll use the following proposition: The best pc game ever made is the game that gave me a lot of good feelings, experience, fun, prizes, friends, etc.

So, the game is Ragnarok Online ;)
