Tune Contest #29 - Game Character Theme

Character Theme

We've already done this theme before, but this time is a little different (and I can't think of anything else).

Instead of coming up with your own original character, use a character from a game who doesn't have a theme. Maybe you could write some lyrics for the melody, though you don't have to sing if you don't want to.

At least one minute
Any audio format
Any instruments/style

Just hate when ppl upload pure Midi/VST stuff. without some actual playing/instruments in it.

Give the newer members a chance who don't know how to use that stuff.

Plus what would you guys think about a solo contest?
Would be awesome, make a simple backtrack and stuff and see who makes
the best solo.

You make it sound like they're at a disadvantage because they're playing on instruments. As long as their tune is good, they've got an equal chance of winning~

you should go ahead and make the solo contest, I'd like to see that.

Um.. didn't navi have that flying song at the intro?

I was just asking about the solo. Maybe I will start something up once the site gets back to life again :)

But I was just saying, VST stuff just tends to sound better at times, compared to some entries who simply recorded with a cell phone if you get the point. Dont want a good entry to be cast aside due to quality.I think I will make something real quick and enter this one though...just can't think of a character.

Samus does have a theme song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lTWCkF8B3o but those other people are good examples

Typically the main character that you play doesn't have a theme since they are always on screen: Link, Mario, Ness and Lucas, Donkey Kong, Kirby (I think), Megaman, Kratos, Gordon Freeman

Im sorry but theres 100's of ways of recording audio. for a solo contest. Press play and play whatever over the track.

I seen solo contest with cell phone quality that win all the time. i mean Christ even a ROCKBAND mic works just fine. Cellphone, camera, webcam, handheld gaming camera,The camera from the PS move and kinect.

And the whole "skill" thing applies to writing a theme as well.

--------------------

The only point I was bringing up is that this is a game TAB website. having every contest filled with 100% prerenderd MIDI files pushes those away who have no clue on how to arrange and Mix midi files, or how and where to get VSt and daws. It becomes a contest of who has the better VST, rather then who has the better song. That's why i try to use as much guitar as possible in whatever I do. I've seen it happen on other forums. I personally dont mind, I have some awesome VST stuff. like 60+ Gbs worth. But I want to see more people enter, It's always fun seeing how different everyone's songs are.

Your prior post.

This is a tab website that mostly uses GuitarPro, tuxguitar, and powertab. The reason why the contest are predominantly midi is because this is what TABBERS are familiar with. Every contest so far has accepted both electronically created, live recordings, or a hybrid of both as songs that can be turned in. No one is being pushed away, unless you do not wish to do it in the first place.

There's already live recording contests and if you really feel you want to try and start one, go right on ahead.

I think both live recordings

I think both live recordings and midi style tracks can have their pros and cons. Cons like, not having some bad-ass pedals/amps and microphones or not having the experience with midi trackers and other types of ill shit.
Kind of like me hehe =^.^= but I still have fun with it.

The pro is that they're both an outlet for expressing a sound or a song you have in your head. Whatever suits you best.

On another note...

...whatever

I don't think people upload midi stuff because they like it. It is kinda sad to compose something on your instrument to share it with shitty midi.
The songs on those contest threads are mainly midi because its easier and faster.
Recording something yourself is pretty tedious. With midi, you only have to work on the composition part.

The solo contest can be a good idea. Though I think it'll be popular with the same people in the Riff of the week contest. Just start it and you'll see.

Tseng Theme from FF7 !

I find that he is a mysterous character, divided between his personal emotions and his duty as the leader of the Turks.

He loves Aerith but he have to hide his feelings... I think he is kinda sad and lonely but proud and faithful.

BTW : i know the musical environement doesn't fits with FF7 music but i don't care :D

It's a theme for Bugenhagen (The guy Red XIII calls Grandfather) or (the old guy with the big green butt)from FFVII. I incorporated the "lifestream" motif from FFVII to make it seem like it belongs. And I used my new Eventide Pitchfactor to get the spacey sound. I figured that sound would fit perfectly with this character as the main thing I remember about him is the scene where he is showing the group the galaxy and talking about all that jazz.

There are some amazing entries in this one!

I have been working so much the last few weeks, I literally couldn't do a recording until today haha
I can't seem to get a tight melody going but I have a cool rhythm.

I am definitely going to elaborate on this song and make it a legit theme for Watts.

Glad to see more submissions than usual.

Heh, I don't know any of these characters except met and mudcrab.

1st Place

Kenor: Garrett - Really like the atmosphere. Defineately someone with a dark past, mysterious and a bit sad.

2nd Place

Jacob: Met - Very fitting for a mega man song.

3rd Place

Gio: Mudcrab - Nice playing and melody. I wish I could write drums like that.

Everyone else (in order of submission)

jit: Dyne - Fantastic as usual. I like the tone of the bass and percussion, pretty good simple melody.

technoturtle: Buzzy - Fun and upbeat, nice use of palm muting.

Hakoria - You're an amazing guitarist. I'd like to see you actually deliver on one of these contests or at least point me to some original music you have posted somewhere. I'm sure you have some great ideas.

hashel: Tseng - Groovy bass. I like the part at 0:50 and the continuously changing melody.

srvjimiandkurt: Bugenhagen - Interesting, Cool space sounds, what's with the picture warping back and forth XD

tiger child: Dark Koopa - Boss. Did you use Famitracker?

iamHoustonian: Watts - Would like to hear a melody, post it if you ever finish!

Overall, one of the best contests in a while

I have some pretty rad ideas for my Watts's theme. Like some industrial sounding drums that use steam sounds and other blacksmithing sounds like hammering metals and whatnot. Just need to find a program that suits my needs :-)

I've been playing that rhythm for the last week haha. I had the day off on the 28th so I figured I'd at least crank out a recording of that and submit it because I called dibs on Watts like 2 weeks ago pahaha.
