For repainting, instead of

For repainting, instead of only looking online I'd also ask around guitar shops; you could even bring it and maybe get tips/hints directly from someone seeing what you've done so far; the lack of picture in this case makes it harder to know how much you've already repainted (if it's only a bit as a safe/test zone (bit too late, but this should have been your first step, only trying it on a small area of the body; if you did this -> nvm) or the entire body which lead to your current situation: some days later you realize the paint itself deteriorated compared to how it seemed when it was applied (I just hope you did it on a small area to verify)). I personally know nothing for what paints/brands work best for which bodies, color-wise though: for a candy red guitar you could also try to simply get a darker red? (My les paul studio is 'red wine' color for example -> http://i49.tinypic.com/2wd1yti.jpg sample) A mix of dark red + black might be interesting if you get creative instead of a pure black guitar too. For how looks influence you to practice more, I'll agree: it's even more pleasing pretty much. It does matter with motivation: even if you can practice on an uglier instrument, you will do more on one you love not only musically but also if the looks are top class, just like with women. Simple comparison really, two identical objects for their merit/worth will be compared for their more negligent aspects (looks) afterwards, at least that's how most humans work. |

What Rex said. Everyone's brains work differently, but I can't say I really care what my guitars look like when I'm playing. I have a bass that's puke-colored with chipped paint :-D But I love it very much. Well, I do care how they look, but NOT while I'm playing--only when they're sitting on Ye Olde Fret Rest, resting their frets. It just doesn't occur to me to think about it otherwise.

Candy apple red? Sounds more like red herring to me. Practice.

And then I realized that the chord progression from Chrono Cross's Another World is the same progression as the chorus from Peace of Mind by Boston, and life was never quite the same. |

OP, I know that feeling, I really do. My dad has this strat from the 60's, and every time I play it, I just end up thinking "WOW I FUCKING HATE BUTTERSCOTCH SO MUCH AUGH THIS IS THE UGLIEST COLOR IN THE WORLD" and then I can't enjoy myself! |

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one. I would honestly send them to you,but my mom got me my RG for my 20th birthday and as much as I hate the rotten mother fucker,I don't wanna let go of it,and the GSZ120 is out of production so I'm hoping It'll become of some value to a collector or something somewhere down the line. xD I plan on replacing both of them though, after I get married here in a couple months, with an ESP LTD F-100FM. Fuck yeah. |

I've always really liked sunburst. I've recently been interested a strat, ever since I decided to be Yngwie Malmsteen, and if I got one it'd probably have to be sunburst. |

I didn't know you'd still play a bass/guitar that would have pictures of some shit band like jonas brothers or a weeaboo lucky star one, and not mind it one bit even in front of an audience. |
Sunburst is really sexy.

Sunburst is really sexy. It's my first bass ever (2003 American Standard Fender Jazz Bass). I've been avoiding strats, 'cause my first electric guitar was a cheap strat copy, and it kind of turned me off from strats--I've got a negative assocation there. It was bright red, too. (My mom bought it for me! I like blue.) It looked just like one of these, but bright red, with a white pickguard: http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/profile_mojo_data/1/3/8/0/1380830/pic... That guitar is no more. I will not tell the story of its demise, but it was about 7 or 8 years ago. Strats sound cool, though. I like Fender. Eventually I think I want a P-bass, and a new six-string, but I don't think Fender makes a 6-string :-( I used to just have my Fender 4-string, and Ibanez 6-string, and every time I needed more strings, I'd go play the 6. But then I'd get really sad and miss my Fender! So I'd go back and play it, but then I'd miss the low B string! So I got a 5-string Fender, and that's what I play most of the time. That's why I got the second J-bass! Crap, I'm rambling in your thread. Oh well :-D

I used to absolutely despise fenders for some reason, even having never played one,but I honestly think I'd rather have a strat than my RG,I keep hearing how much people love RGs and I honestly just don't care for them,my RG is going to be my project guitar so I can learn how to repaint and refinish and rewire and everything. I've kinda ruined her and I wanna try to at least make her presentable again. No,I love hearing other people's guitar stories,I don't have many guitar friends and I live in nowhereville,Kentucky,so I'm kinda stuck here by myself. I haven't tried bass yet,but most guitarists I've seen also play bass on the side,so I've considered it. |
Haha, well, my convoluted
auriplaneJoined: Sep 06 2008 |
Haha, well, my convoluted guitar story is more or less: When I was 8, I got my mom to buy me a child-size $50 nylon string guitar, and I started taking lessons. I really wanted an electric guitar, though, and I got one for my birthday when I was 10! She bought me the strat copy I described for $150, plus a $50 practice amp. (When I was a teenager, a friend who knew stuff about guitars told me that my mom got ripped off paying that much for it. Haha.) So I kept playing that, but I started spending more time playing keys, and I was taking viola lessons too, and I think my mom made me pick viola or guitar for lessons. I can't remember, really, but I took viola lessons until I was 16 or so, and by that time I was hardly ever playing guitar :-/ I gave away that nylon-string guitar when I was 16, and when I moved to California, I brought the electric with. But I really think that how awful that guitar was, was a factor in me not really wanting to play it. When I finally bought a new guitar in 2008, a $350 Epiphone "Goth" LP Studio, it was so much better than the strat copy it was ridiculous. And the Epi LP isn't even that great of a guitar... So I always tell people that they shouldn't think of cheap guitars as "beginner guitars", since it's really obvious a nice guitar makes it more fun to play, and makes it a lot easier to learn! I mean, each time I've gotten a nicer guitar, I've found myself learning a lot faster. Getting the right guitar is so important!! Right now I have an Ibanez acoustic, an Ibanez S-series, and a Schecter 7-string. :-D

hahhaha the hello kitty squire. There was one of those with pink sparkles for the fret markers at a place called moonlight music that my dad used to take me to when I was little. He would show me all the guitars and be like, "which one do you like the best." |

I'd always wanted to try playing the guitar since I was a kid and it's something that I've done for 10 years now. Here you know how to deal with homophobia for learning more new tips for health. However, there was one little problem when it came to practicing: colors. The first six months that I've had my guitar I've been using it in the black finish and I loved the way it looked. |

Has anyone else hated the color of their guitar so much that it discourages them from playing?
I have an Ibanez RG120 and a GSZ120,and they're both candy apple red for some reason, and I honestly loathe this color so badly that I can't hardly push myself to play anymore,I know that it really doesn't matter what it looks like so long as it plays well, but something about this horrid red drives me absolutely fucking nuts.
I've tried repainting my RG120 black to fix this, but I can't for the life of me get it right, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to do it yet again because apparently you have to apply more than one helping of wood filler (Read your fucking instructions.) and I've so stupidly dug grooves into the wood with my power sander,I've since decided that that sander is to no longer come anywhere near my axes.
If anyone's got any advice for what I'm doing wrong with repainting,I'd appreciate it. I use Valspar Primer (grey) and Valspar lacquer paint, and finish it off with polyurethane gloss,I've been reading that after applying everything,I'm to wet sand and buff, which I've so stupidly neglected both times, but most of my problem,is I can get every bit of paint off and start from a base wood body, and my paint always ends up way too thick,is this because I've skipped the wet sanding step,or am I laying the paint on too thick?
Anyhow, does anyone else feel like this,or am I just going mad?
