I guess that's technically true, but GC/XBOX/PS2 were all approximately 128-bit systems...well, maybe not the XBOX...

I had a friend that became extremely furious when I informed him that the original Xbox had a 32-bit processor. I think it had 128-bit SDRAM or something, though, so it could technically be spun as a 128-bit system if enough idiocy were involved.

No.

Gamecube, for example, is 32-bit, not "approximately 128-bit". The N64 was 64-bit, but most people didn't even use a compiler that could emit 64-bit instructions, so for practical purposes it was no better (and actually worse) than a 32-bit console. 64 is not MORE BETTER than 32, and 128 is not MORE BETTER than 64.

Listen, that stuff is all marketing. The Intellivision, sold back in the 70s, was a 16-bit console, and the Wii, sold decades later, is 32-bit. And I can't imagine anyone ever making a 128-bit console. It doesn't make any sense! If you want to do wider than 64-bit ops, just use SIMD, like what the PS3 and 360 do.

Sorry, I know that when people are inaccurate like this, it doesn't really matter. But it drives me a little crazy ;-)

You can justify anything, if you just fanboy hard enough! ;-)

On a serious note it's impossible to come up with just 5 games. There were way too many games I loved from the ps2/xbox generation.

I'd say

(does this count? it's a dreamcast game technically)

(don't judge me ;-;)

You know these types of threads are more interesting if they are "explain why your favorite games are your favorite" instead of arbitrary lists.

Maybe if someone hasn't played the games they will see a reason to check them out.

Fair enough. I won't pretend that I know more about bit size and system power than the wiki article I sourced, and you seem very knowledgeable on the subject (CS/ECE major?). Even though it might be misleading, the big four of the 6th generation consoles are still considered "128-bit era" consoles...I guess that should have been my header.

Actually, I almost switched out Okami/Timesplitters 2 for Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Definitely the best in the trilogy.

Did you tryed Child Of Eden ? Loved it !
Btw the Snail-Girl is technically ( engrish ? ) right, but usually everyone refer such period (xbox, dc, gc, ps2 ) as the 128 bit era. Like the 32 bit era ( I will make a topic bout other generation soon cuz I like it ) refer to PSX, N64 and Saturn, even if we all knows that the N64 is offcourse 64-bit.
Btw the handled consolle count as well.
GBA had such great game.

So there are no 128-bit consoles. Question, then: if someone wants to group the Playstation 2, Gamecube, Dreamcast, and Xbox together, what simple, easy-to-remember, colloquially acceptable name would you have them call the group? (I know this is a setup for a joke like "total crap", but I'm looking for a real alternative. This note is mostly for other people, as I figure Auriplane wouldn't make that kind of joke. :p)

[edit] Never mind, apparently the wikipedia article calls them "sixth generation consoles" and includes all four, so...there you go!
