Fingerstyle Challenge of the Week #6 FINISHED

Start of CELES - FINAL FANTASY VI

-- Tune the 6th string up 2 frets to F#
-- Use a Capo on first fret, or it you don't have one, just play with out it, but a couple of stretches might be a bit more difficult.

-- I have bolded the notes that need to be accented, they are the melody, and need to be held longer then the accompaning notes, which are just the harmony. It is important to seperate the melody and harmony voices to make it sound like the original track in the game.

-- The left hand finger numbers under the tab along with the capo markings where to hold down bar chords are what i found to be the most fluid way of making all the notes connect in the left hand.

HERE IS THE COMPLETE TAB in .pdf and a .midi file to listen:

PLAY AT WHAT SPEED YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH, it is pretty fast, but it is better to play musically then sloppy.

musicality is the most important thing for me, and this can be achieved even with fret noise, scratchy nails, and out of tune guitar, or playing slowly. (but obviously try to avoid the first 3!!)
its better to make it musical then play it fast beyond your technique and sloppy.

amz181, i was hoping to hear peoples interpretations first before releasing my recording!

i feel an important part of musicianship when doing a 'cover' of another piece is listening and also creating your own interpretation. but i see everyones playing level is at different levels, so i will see, maybe i will do an example.
but i would prefer not to, instead, i would hope anyone that enters this week 6 competition, will listen many times to the original track from the game (on youtube is an easy way to do it), and then try to bring their own feeling and interpretation to the piece into a guitar performance, whatever their playing level is at.

if stamen47 doesnt write back in a couple of days, i may just upload the tab, if i hadnt mentioned it was based on his, no one would have noticed anyway, as it is a total reworking, made more comfortable to play on the guitar, but i wanted to be fair to him and recognise that he was first to arrange to guitar.

I probably would have dissuaded against hosts using one of their own tabs for a contest, but it's not a rule or anything. I'm not completely against it, it just isn't a trend that I'd enjoy seeing continue.

Anyways, I really like how this contest centers on accentuated notes. I think accentuation is a relatively easy concept that a lot of people neglect, and it often shows. Accenting notes can make a large impact on someone's playing.

How long is the final assigned tab going to be? We only have 4 more days, unless everyone wants to extend the deadline.

Actually nate, I'd be fine with a person presenting their own tab. I actually thought of doing it, because I have a couple that are difficult enough and also exercise new skills, but have received very little attention simply because the games aren't popular among the folks here. I think winning would be a good chance for a person to give one of their own tabs some air time, as long as it was fitting for the competition.

Yes, you only use a capo on the first fret (for the whole song) - but the other parts where i wrote Capo i mean barre with first finger. sorry about that, thats the terminology im uses to.

The competition is just that start of the song, whats in the first post, so the intro and first couple of bars of the theme. im upload now the whole tab to gametabs for anyone that wants the whole song. ill put up a recording of the whole song after the competition ends.

Well I've been busy all week working on my own arrangements. I think when the amount of contestants start dropping it's a good time to take a break; extending the deadline for the piece indefinitely until numbers are restored.

I know kpcart would like to record this himself, so perhaps after you guys are finished with this one, and the next is created; a short break can be administered to rejuvenate peoples' motivation.

I would love an extension :)

MONKEYDYO - welcome to the site.
good work, a couple rough notes, but mainly clean, you held all the important notes the correct length. the end of fast section sounded choppy but, its the first 6 notes of bar 8, you repeat the thumb, but a different combination would sound cleaner, such as thumb, middle, index, thumb, middle index - that order would then be easier to play fast when you eventually play the piece faster. also in the faster section sometimes you played rest stroke, when its more consistent sounding to just do the whole thing in freestroke - you can hear the sound contrast when in the last 2 bars of fast section, you started restroke index and middle fingers then switched to freestroke thumb.

ENNEA - good clean sound. you brough out the top notes well, except for in bar 3 the first note that you play with finger 4 on the left hand should be held for 6 notes, you only held for 3, as you lifted the 4th finger to play the fourth note of the bar, this made the top melody sound disconnected, 3rd finger should have been used on the 4th note of the bar (its a hard stretch i know). again in bar 6, the first note also wasnt held long enough (but i thing your bar with the first finger just slipped). also, like monkeydyuo, the right hand could have had a better fingering to not have to repeat the thumb quickly i.e. in bar 4 for the lower notes (note 2,3 and 5,6) you did all with thumb, but a smoother combination (from 2nd to 6th note) would be for example something like thumb, index, middle, thumb, index. alot of fret noise at start of bar 8.

FATALFABLE - The fast section sounded relatively smooth, but the top voice in the fast section was too inconsistent, in bars 1 and 4 and 7 you didnt hold the first note of each bar long enough, also that top voice was too quiet a lot of the times, the top notes should be louder then the accompaning notes. you repeated the second last bar!, but that might be my fault, it didnt need to be their, that repeat sign is from the complete tab, and it is an open repeat, meaning you first have to see the closed repeat sign (which comes in later in the song, and then you repeat from this point).

SURREAL - good right hand fingering in fast section which helped you to play at speed and made it quite fluid. the change from the end of the 1st bar to the start of the second bar is difficult at speed, and you lifted a bit fast or something and made the open D sound. also in bar 4 you doubled a note. the top f# in bar 7 was too weak - that was the climax of the top melody in that section. going from the second to third bar in slow part sounded disconnected because you used the 3rd finger for the last note, which then quickly had to jump to the fifth string for the next bar, thats why 4th finger should have been for the last note of bar 10, to better connect the melody.

sorry i mainly named the bad points, but that is just to help you guys now what to improve.
i toss a coin...

and Surreal gets it - on first impression, his sounded more impressive mainly because of fluid right hand in fast section... and he slipped a 50 in my backpocket ;) just kidding

I hope all you guys re-enter the next competitions, you are all capable of winning

Kpcart its not at all your fault with the repeats. Like I said earlier when I posted it was not at all a final draft as I had broken a string while I was doing some retakes hence the mediocre recording. I just uploaded the previous one I had done before I broke the string. The repeat was just because I forgot the final part not because of a confusion. Very nice arrangement btw :)
