For me, i started out with your basic open chords, then came tab, from tab i learned how to play some scales: To the point i have a vast knowledge of scales, i can relate some solos to scales. Im not too great with ear learning but i can read both tab and partial parts of actual music. So my theory outweights my ear. But yeah you can learn any which way you want the way i see it.

Hail friends,
I've been studying a good bit of musical theory here lately, and I was just wondering how the rest of you got started learning to play,or how many of you have bothered with scales and intervals and what have ye.
If you do study musical theory, how important would you say it is for others to learn it,at least certain aspects of it. Clearly we all need to understand what chords and scales and the like are,but is it really necessary to learn music up to beethoven levels?
