So when turned 19 I saved up and used whatever money i could to get one and started learning.

got an ion for christmas one year. no real reason at all; this was about the time i got into slipknot and rammstein and the such, and strated off playing thigns like metallica and nirvana, then worked my way up. learned some trivium and killswitch engage (both of which i still say ahve some of the funnest riffs on guitar), then i learned some children of bodom, which introduced me to the melodic scene in death metal, and the all mighty in flames became known to me, when i saw the video for take this life on muchLOUD; i enjoyed it so much, i had to look mroe into the band, and when i heard things from the jester race, colony, and whoracle, my mind was set; i wanted to be an actor on the stage of melodic death metal.

now ive been getting more into mellower things, and combining hard hitting riffs with pretty acoustic build ups and layering.

i try to play djent riffs, but i cant hack that stuff man, so fucking technical.

i feel if i can master one dream theater riff in entirety, then ill be able to play some periphery or protest the hero, even though the latter is technically prog-metal (i still say theyre djent though)

I originally played bass for a few months after a friend convinced me to buy one. I soon moved on to electric guitar for a further few months. Although I was progressing well at both, I was only interested in playing the more melodic stuff. After a few months of playing I started to learn fingersyle, and soon after that found gametabs. I moved on to the classical guitar, and havn't look back since.

I can't remember any motivating factors, it was just something to do.

I just listened to 80's rock when I was around 12 and thought the guitar solos were cool (whatever happened to solos in modern rock anyway?)

Then I took piano class in middle school and realized how easy it came to me after my guitar background. I basically just play a ton of Zelda songs and some SOTC on piano

i was into nile a few years back, havent given them a listen now in a while; didnt they release not too long ago? or am i mistaken all together?

also, thumbs up for kreator.

the overly heavy stuff i got into was stuff like carnifex, here comes the kraken, i declare war, disfiguring the goddess, faceless, job for a cowboy, agonist (hottest chick in metal, dont give a FUCK); i really dig that style of sonic bombardment

trivium has some seriously awesome solos (look a palindrome!), and i think in flames has some nice stuff too, and lets not leave out dream theater, they remain masters imo

but maybe that style of music doesnt appeal to you much hsl, so you might not have listened into it. if its the vocals that throw you off, try this! an instrumental heah!

currently my favorite players and artists are a2c,KaizokuOu, Marco Sfogli, victor Wooten and some Greg Howe,SOME(Actually just 1-2 songs lol) Vai, Some Petrucci, nearly no Satriani. I never really liked Joe Satriani's style anyways, amazing player tho.
I still listen to metalcore bands for the riffs. gawd those palm muted bass note change riffs. will never get old.

I also currently enjoy All that remains. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0pYWGjECLE Boss Song,Boss band.

I was heavily into Children of Bodom too a few years ago, but only up until hatecrew deathroll, I followed each album released, then I think they took a while to release the next one, and shit was just not the same. "Are you dead yet?" I dare say that album sucked major balls compared to their previous material. no idea what CoB has been doing since then. I might give them a try again after so many years lol.

dont. really, just no, at least from my viewpoint; if you didnt like AYDY? you aint gonna like blooddrunk, guaran-fucking-teed.

i liked are you dead yet quite a bit actually, but follow the reaper and hatecrew deathroll was the best from CoB

also, @hsl, in flames has a lot of instrumentals. nearly one for each album actually. their acoustic stuff is godly, no joke. acoustic medley, the riffiage in jester script transfigured (non-instrumental)... all utterly divine.

I used to think Slash (only GNR, never listened to VR or his solo works) was the best guitarist ever. Then Dragonforce's drunken team as amazing skills-wise (well, herman ri ofc, not the other guy). Free Bird's solo seemed like the top of the mountain.

Then I discovered Jason Becker out of nowhere. Have never listened to the previous bands since pretty much. Since JB I've only continued to discover more and more real skills too.

it was considered an "80's hair metal" thing. So in the 90's people stopped doing them. Then it became a Mindless "shredder" technique and people just bash them most of the time. As time went on Media musicians became less original and talented, yet more famous? Til we got the music we have today.

Metal will never die, there will always be musicians who want to actually play the guitar at the level of a jazz player.

Always had a affection towards music, so my mum put me into a musician-school and gave me a guitar for christmas (although I wanted a N64!). I was stuck there for around 2 years and only learned some strumming and chords and lost interest pretty fast, plus I only played for the one hour in the school and not even once at home. So after these years I stopped and haven't touched my guitar for around 5 years.

Than when I was 18 I somehow really wanted to start it again and learned some easy tabs like avril lavigne and stuff, re-learned everything from music school in around 2 weeks... Pretty soon I discovered some VGM tabs here and there and practised them a bit, since then I never wanted to play normal songs anymore. Totally got me hooked.

Well, I could play a little meoldy from a song, so naturally I thought I was amazing and had 'already learnt the guitar' hah. Someone bought be a guitar book about five years later and i realised i hated chords, with a passion. They just felt incomplete to me. I still wanted to learn the guitar tho; I wanted to play the whole song on my guitar, not just the little shitty part you hear in the background. Then I found this site and fell in love with the nostalgia.
