Yeah I would've said FF4,

My life is a chip in your pile. Ante up!

Yeah I would've said FF4, because it was my first RPG when it was new, and it is the most nostalgic game in my life...but I think 6 is the best and CT is just so close to FF6 but didn't have as many characters, or as deep of backstories for them. Anyway I'd put a few other games for runnerup:

-Lufia 2
-Terranigma
-Soul Blazer
-ActRaiser
-Secret of Mana & Evermore
-Breath of Fire 1/2/3
-Zelda 1/2/3/4
-Super Mario World
-Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3

I can't understand the like for FF9. It's the one game I haven't played in probably close to 10 years, the longest I've ever gone with a FF that I've played before. It just did NOT impress me.

There's nothing to understand. People like different things.

I can't speak for lemon and nate but..

I liked the story. Zidane was likable and easy to empathize with. He got to roam around free from commitments as a thief. He was always upbeat and wasn't whiny and obnoxious ala cloud/squall(except near the end, but that was more or less warranted). Some of the side characters like Amarant were never really fully developed but they all had distinct personalities and appeareances.

I liked the gameplay. This is really the big deal for me more than anything else, it's what you play a game for. If you play FFIX for any amount of time you GET something out of it. Either story via cutscenes/dialogue or the special cutscenes you could choose that were happening in other places (forget the exact name) or you get a new item/spell/skill. The sort of pavlovian "fun" dial in terms of work vs reward was very generous. It wasn't 800 hours of grinding to get a sword with 1 more damage.

The equipment system was cool in that you didn't always WANT to use the next best weapon. Sometimes you would use on an on paper inferior weapon and you had incentives to hunt down every weapon possible because finding oddball weapons taught you skills you didnt have. Additionally items had special effects like reducing elemental damage or other such utility that allowed you to fine tune your strategy to specific bosses or encounters.

Also the "stone/gem" system meant that you had to be somewhat tactical in your passive skill choosing. Which is not unlike talents in World of Warcraft or other similar systems. You cant get EVERY passive buff, you have to choose the ones you want based on what you think you need. The cool thing was unlike other games you weren't STUCK with whatever skills you chose (which could lead to things like OOPS LOL PICKED SHITTY SKILL TIME TO RESTART ENTIRE GAME) you could freely unassign skills and use the points to take other skills.

The legendary/chocobo quests were pretty fun. At least I enjoyed them. They didn't just feel like chores or some stupid shit like dodging lightning 200 times.

I liked the music. I pretty much loved the whole soundtrack to this game and the majority of the guitar music I know comes from FFIX. I can listen to each song and have a clear mental image of what part of the game it's attached to. There's a lot of diverse music from Frontier Village Dali(quiet subdued town theme) to Youre not Alone (more serious, somber theme) to the battle theme and even Dark Messenger (more progressive, killer bassline and one of my favorite game songs ever). Also a lot of the music in FFIX comes from older FF games and is sort of an homage to the series in some ways, which is fitting because in my mind it turned out to be squaresofts swan song.

I liked the artwork. This was basically the last time we saw a final fantasy with world maps and pre rendered environments. Not to mention it was a different direction than many of the newer FF games which traded in more medieval themes in favor of some psuedo cyberpunk feel. I feel the medieval theme is more in line with earlier games and also RPG (not just JRPG but ALL RPG) roots (i.e. pen and paper/D&D/LotR/etc)

I liked the time in my life when I was playing the game. I suspect many of our favorite games are a part of a good time in our lives and as such thinking of these games brings us back there and are why we like them. Maybe FFIX was just around during a good time for a lot of people.

I dunno, that's just my two cents.

That last one is funny,

Yeah I've been playing FF4 for 20 years now, still not tired of it. I replay games until I master them, some people don't get that, but I think a good game you always learn something new every time you play...and the best games simply never get old!
