About the sale of the site

archard

Joined: Jan 11 2007

So there has been some fervor about my previous comment that I am selling the site and I would like to explain a little further.

First I must say that I'm not handing it over to any big corporate entity like Google. I'm selling it to a young chap from the UK named Ash who is both an experienced computer programming and has experience running a guitar tablature website. Said website unfortunately fell victim to legality issues some years ago and was forced to go down. From my conversations with him, I know that he has an understanding and respect for what this site is all about and I'm confident that it's not going to turn into a shithole. As a matter of fact, I really expect everything to be business as usual around here once Ash takes over. I'm still going to remain an admin, actually; he will simply have the ultimate say in how everything is run.

Ash is a bro. Don't worry about it. I still love you guys. I just don't have time to do ANYTHING with the site anymore, and I would hate for there to be some issue with the site that needed my attention when I couldn't be there. And I think there are many ways in which the site could be improved, but I certainly don't have any time to put into that anymore. I don't want you guys to think of it as me leaving. Think of it like when Bill Gates left Microsoft. He was still sorta the boss in many ways, but he relinquished his role as CEO because he had other aspirations. This site was a huge part of my life for a long time, and in many ways it got me to the point where I am today. But I have other fish to fry now and it would make no sense IMO for me to stay on the site in my current capacity.

Long live archard! So, will

Hey everyone, I thought it would be a good time to introduce myself. The first thing I really want to say is that I'm not going to come into your house and start messing shit up. This is and will always be your community and I look forward to becoming a part of it.

I kinda have mixed feelings about taking over from Archard. Like I said, I'm really looking forward to being involved in this awesome community that he's been so integral in building. On the other hand, I know what it's like to have to leave a project like this and so I'm not really enjoying being a part of that. However, as Archard said, he doesn't have the time any more. Even though we're not saying goodbye to him, I'm sure you'll join me in wishing him the very best in the ridiculous stuff he's getting up to in his life right now. Honestly, I'm a little jealous of him.

As Archard said, I know my stuff when it comes to software and I have some experience with this type of site, but it's going to take me a little while to find my footing over here. I look forward to getting to know you all and would be super appreciative if the mods could help show me the ropes. First and foremost, I just want to see a nice clean transition of the site and then get to know you all and understand the community a bit better. In time, I want to work with you and try to bring about any positive changes we can to help ensure that this is the best site it can be.

Finally, I'm not going to bullshit you. I don't do bullshit. I bought the site from Archard and giving him the cash to help him achieve his dreams is something that is giving me satisfaction in a very difficult time in my life. My mother passed away two weeks ago. I don't want any sympathy or anything. You didn't know her and you don't know me yet either. I just wanted to explain that it might take me a little while before I can be as productive as I'd like to be, so please bare with me. The timing of everything is just really bad right now. But anyway, as I was saying! I've been looking to buy a site for a while now in the hope that (after owning it for a few years) it would start to make me a little money. Archard is just trying to do his best in life, and so am I. In fact, I'd love to be doing the exact stuff he's doing right now and trying my best to make a little extra cash is all part of that. I'm just super grateful that I happened to find gametabs - only two weeks before we started talking, I was telling my friends that I miss running my tab site from way back in the day. So this really could work out well for all of us.

If you have any questions, comments or would just like to say hey, I'd love to hear from you. I was wondering how long it would take for the US-UK banter to start but I can see that's already happened :)

Thanks,

Ash

You're invited to be depressing about what's been going on in your life there. I've heard it strengthens bonds between people so even if it might not be the typical style of introduction (this one was fine, just superficial in the sense that we still don't know much about you besides the fact you're brit and inspired to do well with us which we'll hope to be true; but hey! I never got to know much about archard besides the fact he lives (well, 'lived' soon, maybe) in a desert and that he took a pic of Rex's ass in Paris, so dw) it could always help out if you wanted some suggestions as to figuring out "what will be best for them and myself at once".

You've said you've had stuff going on lately though, so it's not like I'm actually asking you to be in a rush btw, these are long-run stuff that tend to work (noticed by observation) and are always brought up in community/group psychology too. if it was obvious then don't mind this and just care about the 'soup at the start.

I abuse parentheses and make them my bitch the longer my posts get btw, so don't mind that.
Oh right, hope you'll enjoy being here etcetc!

Ash, as we are musiciens and (ex)gamers (damned social life !), that would be interesting to know which are you favorit games, OST and bands =)

Hey, hashel. Like you, I'm feeling the pressures of social and professional life etc. I play drums, guitar and keyboard although nowadays, I play them badly with the possible exception of drums. Times have changed and I've converted my studio into an office, but I can't bring myself to sell all my recording gear because of the memories and the feeling that "I might use it one day...honest...". Even though I don't have much time for playing, I can't stop myself from writing if the mood captures me.

Again, not having much time affects the games I play. I tend to only play stuff I can easily pick up and put down - stuff like MW3. My favourite game of all time is Final Fantasy VII. I haven't found a game that emotionally capturing since. In fact, I stopped playing games for a long time because nothing was quite the same to me. Whenever I try to play RPGs nowadays, I usually get a third of the way through and then something else comes up in life and I lose the 'mood' if you know what I mean.

In general, my favourite band is probably Muse. My brain doesn't work in a visual way, I'm very 'auditory' when it comes to thinking. I spend a lot of time thinking and working on projects so again that's shaped my tastes. I spend a lot of time listening to instrumental music because vocals are such a massive distraction to me if I'm busy. So I'm usually found listening to stuff like Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Bonobo and Boards of Canada. I love TV and movie soundtracks, particularly if they're electronic or orchestral. Battlestar Galactica, Inception, Tron etc. I frakin' love me some strings. So in terms of game soundtracks, I'm most addicted the Assassin's Creed OSTs.

So there we go. Now you probably have some (new, non-xenophobic) reasons to hate me :)

Sorry Salem, I missed your comment. Expectations...hmm. That's a difficult question. I don't really have any expectations. My first goal is really to just not break anything while I gain a better understanding of the community and and software. Ideally, I would like to grow it while maintaining the rich community that you already have here, but I really want it to be up to you guys to decide how the site progresses from here. I'd prefer to be thought of more as a building superintendent than some boss who is just going to control things.
There are already a bunch of positive suggestions on the forum and that's great. I'll be setting up a bug tracking/feature request thing and then I'd like to gauge everyone's thoughts on the ideas that people have been raising. I want to make sure I'm always focusing on the things that will improve the site the most.
