Assuming it's actually true. It's probably going to end up being the result of some sort of systematic error, but I kind of hope their findings are the real deal. I can't wait for the official statement/explanation! |

I'm pretty psyched at having more evidence for the tachyonic neutrino hypothesis. There's plenty of reasons to doubt it (e.g. the velocities don't seem to fit the math if you compare the time lags and energies between 1987A and CERN), but there's also evidence for it. For example, in the early 90s six experiments in a row showed negative mass squared and therefore complex neutrino mass. Also, the MINOS results. MINOS, though, was only 1.8 sigma, and this is 6 sigma, which is pretty exciting! 1987A is an indirectly negative result, depending on certain (very probably true) assumptions as to why the photons were delayed. But really, we've been making up explanations for a while as to why neutrinos arrive early, and it's possible the explanations haven't been correct. Also, consider that the 1987A neutrinos were electron antineutrinos, while MINOS and FNAL observed muon neutrinos, and CERN was concerned with muon and tau neutrinos. As far as why it matters, who can say? If they aren't tachyonic, it's a meaningless question, and if they are, then we won't know how to answer it until we know how they work. Of course, everyone's reviewing old results and working to find some sort of systematic error, but I'm excited :-)
