Ok im doing a project for engineering and my topic is guitar.

what i need too do is basically solve a problem with the guitar using innovations or making an improvement to it. Sooooo!!! what i need is everyone's help to tell me....

What do you hate about the guitar?
What problems are annoying?
Any Improvements you want on it?

Please help!!!

I really can't find a problem with a guitar. To me the design is perfect. I think the engineering of the guitar's acoustics has been developed perfectly over centuries.
But hey, I know something you can improve! Maybe you can improve the crappy guitars being mass-produced and shipped to Wal-Marts all across America!

There are probably solutions for lots of the problems people have, but one that I have is posture. I have a bad habit of craning over the top of the guitar to look at what I'm doing, and I think it may be causing some upper back problems. If I concentrated, I'm sure I could sit up straight, but if there was some kind of solution where I didn't have to think about it and my back didn't hurt I'd be very happy.

Most problems with the acoustic guitar have been sorted out over the last few decades.

Lack of range = extended fretboard/more than 6 strings

Equal temperment problems = fanned frets

uncomfortable ergonomics = beveled edges/manzer wedge

Body too large = multiple sizings

Choosing between fretless and frets = switch on/off frets

Nylon sound without the scale = Godin guitars and shit

"Nylon sound without the scale"? My steel string is 25.6", the same scale as a classical. That varies, but it's pretty standard.

Anyway, no, the guitar isn't perfected. It's a series of compromises--a "perfect" guitar is pretty much a physical impossibility. Different guitars are made or set up with different compromises made. In fact, pretty much everything surreal listed is a compromise. Is a guitar better or worse if it has one of those features? There's no clear answer for any of those.

I'd guess there's a lot of room for innovation. However, you've got a lot of competition, so you'll have to be creative to think of something that is both a good idae and hasn't been thought of by someone else. Come up with an idea like "use robotics to tune the guitar" or "use lasers for pickups", and it's been done.

A lot of innovations come from combinations of old technology with new. For example, MIDI and DSP come along, and suddenly we have MIDI guitars. Others come out of necessity, like coming up with an alternative to avoid a patented design (like ball bearing pivots on a tremolo).

Anyway, good luck :-)

I agree with Auri. She said what I would have said if I didn't have to rely on the tiny dinosaur brain residing in my tail.

Also sometimes "solutions" solve one problem, but compound or add slightly to another.

That's a good point. If you take "problem" as "problem you didn't know existed", you could come up with an innovation which would make the guitar less suitable for how it's currently used, but opens up a new use :-)

well what do you guys find really annoying
like for me i hate it how i lose picks every freaking day
or how strings degrade all fast
or how the little knob thing tends to move by themselves

pick holders have been made to attach to the guitar

strings have been coated

knobs have been knobbed better.

Ya rly, but you get what you pay for. I still use mine, I've done a lot to it to improve the tone, but I also think it's great to start off cheap and do a lot of learning...same way I feel about cars, buy a cheap first one, figure everything out and then move up in the world. So many teenagers have parents buy them an expensive guitar and then they never really learn how to play it but they think they're entitled to it. IDK just my opinion on things. You appreciate what you buy yourself more.
