I got a new guitar for my birthday. Some family members wanted to hear a song. I had to play in front of a bunch of people and the only songs I could think of were video game songs. They asked me when I was done where it was from. I got funny looks. Was awkward. People tend to infantilize (I can't spell this fucking word apparently) gaming in all forms. They think we're still 2d dingos collecting gems or something with bleeps and bloops for music. /shrug, what are you gonna do? |

Possible that she calls them

Possible that she calls them idiots not because they have a different opinion, but because they have already berated her for hers. I tend to feel, whenever I mention playing game music, that I have to justify it. Before knowing what people really think--I just tend to assume they'll think it's for losers unless I explain the musical value it actually has. :/

And then I realized that the chord progression from Chrono Cross's Another World is the same progression as the chorus from Peace of Mind by Boston, and life was never quite the same. |

Even so, going down to their level isn't any better.
It's the labeling of the music. If I don't say a word of what a piece is from, they'll enjoy it. Then if I tell them where it came from, they immediately have a sense of guilt or embarrassment that they liked it. It's a shame really, but that's just how it is. |
You can take the high road
auriplaneJoined: Sep 06 2008 |
You can take the high road and avoid calling something stupid because you want to be nice. That doesn't mean, however, that it isn't stupid! Video game music spans all genres, and you can't meaningfully generalize about the quality of all VGM. It's as orthogonal as saying "I dislike video games that use the color green". Sure, they can have their opinion. Sure, you can avoid saying the opinion is stupid. But that doesn't make it any less so.

Thankfully my mom likes games and their music almost as much as I do. She's been playing Zelda since it came out, and started FF4 right when I did, when it came out, we rented it from the video store and were hooked. She's actually better than me at solving puzzles and finding hidden shit, which is why she loves Zelda. She only played the FF series til 6, which is fine, she's not missing much. But she thinks it's cool that I'm playing the old songs. I was lucky as a kid, I got all the RPGs back in the day because my mom wanted to play them too :P |

people tend to think of me as a loser when i play or listen to VGM, in fact 300 of 380 songs on my ipod are VGM... when they insult me i tend to say "hey i listen to some real bands too, check out these guys... 'the black mages' they're awesome" people have no musical taste... they just find some crappy singer like lady gaga or justin beiber and stick with it thinking that good music requires repeated words... music that people listen to simply relies on how much makeup they wear and how slutty they act... its not real |

Just because they don't listen to your type of music doesn't mean they lack musical taste. I enjoy a lot of the radio rap/pop if I'm out at a club dancing or just socializing with friends in a bar. |

I've got 2100 songs on my ipod, and almost 1000 of them are video game remixes. I do have like 100 actual VGMs, that I use for guitar practice (set my ipod on the dock and play along). And then another huge chunk is just guitar instrumentals by people like Buckethead, Joe Satriani, Mintjam/a2c (who is my favorite!), Eric Johnson, etc. Then the rest really is 70s, 80s and 90s. I hate pop music. |

My dad doesn't like when I play video games in general. When I play Vgm on my guitar he asks me "why don't you play some classical or something?". That said my mom is somewhat a gamer. She was actually able to breed a Gold Chocobo in ff7 for Pete's Sake! That's the one thing I never got around to do. My sister is more of a puzzle gamer, but she loves final fantasy 9. :)

you just, in effect, essentially summed up the entirety of the human race. i applaud thou tenacity, this feat i knew not of thee. ... anywho, yes it happens all the time to me. but if i play something from mario, people love it. if i play the FF prelude, people tell me to knock it the fuck off and play heart of gold. if i play breezy/balamb from VIII, folks mellow out and love the tune, and tell me to keep playing, if i play the FF7 boss theme, my metalhead buddies are lovin it, my not metalhead buddies, not so much, and if i ever play radical dreamers, everyone lapses into utter silence and responds to the theme in the music, and the story it tells. its like this one time i was listening to slipknot in art class back in highschool, metabolic was the song, and some girls gotta pissy and whined until i turned it off. but then, i turned ons tone sour, and they all said "I LOVE THAT SONG!" or "HIS VOICE IS SOOO GOOOD!" corey taylor is the lead vocalist in both stone sour AND slipknot. i ask you, do fans attract the music? or does the music attract the fan?

yes, absolutely. though, in the newer stuff, he actually sings, and you can hear the similarity. my point is, people judge not by what is worth finding out, they judge by what they feel to be correct. they make assumptions, bad ones, not wrong ones, theres a difference. i heard some say that a stone temple pilot song (creep) was the worst creed song they ever heard. i laughed and laughed and laughed. just cause scott weiland sounds like scott stapp, doesnt mean its the same band.

I was talking about this on Facebook, and since you're not all on there, I was wondering how often this happens. I had a few people attempt to "insult" me on another forum (cars) by telling me to "get back to playing video game music on the guitar" when I said something they didn't agree with.
Now, I think that's completely hilarious and pathetic (not to mention ad hominem) and I don't need help with it, lol, I was just wondering if that's happened to you guys. I love being a nerd (I'm a bookworm too). I also party and obviously am into cars as well, so I really have a broad spectrum of friends. I don't try to talk to my video game friends about cars or vice versa, obviously. However I'm proud of all of my passions so everyone knows what I like.
Oh and the funniest part was the guys who said that are both goofy as hell, one smokes pot all the time and the other does nothing but go out and get drunk trying to pick up girls to fuck. I feel sorry for them.
