Obscure / Underrated Game Soundtracks

I looked around briefly but I couldn't find a thread like this in any of the forums. Please merge / point me in that direction if I missed it.

Otherwise, itt share a couple of links to quality VGM that gets overlooked.

Solstice NES

In the 80s, Solstice composer Tim Follin became something of a legend for pushing the boundaries of what was considered possible for 8 bit game music. His achievements are numerous and its well worth reading his wikipedia article. He should be one of the most famous of all VGM composers imo.

Turok 2 - The Port of Adia

The rest of the soundtrack is pretty forgettable but this track was awesome.

Mystical Ninja 2 - Edo Castle

Probably one of the most underrated game series ever, Mystical Ninja was fucking hilarious and the music was fantastic.

nice. hey, not to make an issue of it, but i take it you're a girl. do you feel that there should be more female composers doing progressive music? i was thrilled when i first learned that there were a few prominent female VGM composers (michiru yamane, yoko shimomura etc) but i'm still not seeing many female progressive guitar players. as a composer/guitarist, is that something you feel strongly about?

Eh, people are people. I don't know why fewer women are into prog, but I'm more concerned with whether the music is good than whether the composer is female :-D

Yamane and Shimomura are both awesome, though.

Im pretty sure I heard an OC remix version of that turok 2 song and remember it being pretty damn good.

Does Beyond Good and Evil count?

I really like Alexander Brandon's music. It seems youre familiar with at least his Deus Ex stuff, but I loved his work on the original Unreal (no not tournament, the one JUST called unreal) and also Unreal Tournament 99.

Unreal - Shared Dig

Unreal Tournament 99- Phantom

I was rediscovering Timesplitters 2 and found it actually had a really good soundtrack.

Timesplitters 2 Wild Wild West (I especially like the part that kicks in around 1:45 ish)

Despite using covers of old pop music Stubbs the Zombie for the original Xbox has a killer soundtrack.

i just use "prog" as a blanket term for anything that kindof transcends genre and has had a bit of thought put into it. most of the female artists out there tend to stick to formulaic music (all girl punk, acoustic folk, pop etc) and they pay plenty of lip service to there not being enough original or experimental female artists (especially in rock), but then they get all defensive as soon as someone asks why there aren't more female progressive instrumentalists. maybe i'm wrong but i just feel like there's a bit of a double standard when i try to discuss it with female musicians i know, like its something you're not allowed to talk about. of course the music matters more than the gender, but i'd hate to see progressive and alternative sounds remain the preserve of male musicians indefinitely. i really want to see more girls make an impact as instrumentalists and musical visionaries.

that's tight, you should totally finish that.

the song kindof takes a while to pick up though. the bass at 1:23 and the strings at 1:43 are the best parts.

Sad song

There are more happy/emotional songs that I'm too lazy to make in-game recordings of though (because the OST album released is actually..um...higher-quality rerecordings? And limited in song selection)

There is also Saiyuki Journey West for the PSX

Illusion of Gaia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qterCE6F3RM&feature=youtube_gdata_player) and Alundra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62HoIMZ8xAE&feature=youtube_gdata_player) have criminally underrated soundtracks. And though I'll chalk this one up to nostalgia, a couple songs from Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories and Eternal Duelist Soul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irTxv_kkee4&feature=youtube_gdata_player) are awesome. Too bad next to nobody played those.

Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology, Steven Rippy made some really fantastic soundtracks for both of these in particular, they fit in so well with the strategy gameplay and fuse elements of the time period with more modern sounds to create a vast soundscape:
