I like In Flames. They were my gateway into "extreme" metal years ago, and even though I listen to other music more often now, they're still my go-to band when I want to hear some metal. I still haven't found any metal that comes close to In Flames' instrumental stuff.

then, my friend, i have the band for you. listen to omnium gatherum, they are nearly on par with in flames musicianship, the difference bing OG hasnt changed style as drastically.

no, they arent quite as good as in flames, but they are damn close.

its kind of hard to top a song like man made god, resin, or goliaths disarm their davids.

jester script transfigured is godly.

if you like that older style in flames, then have a listen to at the gates and dark tranquility as well, they are also from gothenburg (which translates as land of awesome), and they also have a prominent old school melodeth vibe in their music.

listen to omnium gatherum though (song? the perfumed garden, sons thoughts, nail, and green eyes). insomnium is a very similar style (from finland as well), and they often quote poetry in their music--check the lay of the autumn, where the last wave broke, and thousand eyes.

trust me mate, you wont be disappointed.

btw, new in flames out in june, the first single, called deliver us, is out the 10th of may, at least in north america.

dave mustaine fan eh? DAMN good guitar player, but i personally think he was best suited with metallica, but he fucked that up for himself. that being said, megadeath is a highly influential thrash band, and comes to the top of the list for any thrash-heads.

i havent listened to any thrash metal since metallica, and that was some years ago. kinda stepped out of it i guess, it didnt appeal as much anymore. lately ive been diggin the grindcore (carnifex, job for a cowboy, etc.) and groove metal (lamb of god).

my roots for metal reside in thrash and the good ol disgusto german band...oh yes, rammstein.

rammstein wrote a song about these cannibal guys fighting over who was gonna eat the fried dick, called mein teil (my piece).

the weird thing? its based on actual events... yeah, rammstein man, fuckin deep.

yeah, thats rammstein for ya. check em out man, fuckin awesome music. older stuff like du hast, buch dich, sehnsucht, klavier, eifersucht...all awesome tunes, highly recommended if you havent heard em before.

on stage antics are messed up (singin into microphones rigged out as dildos, usin hoses in the pants to emulate ejacultion, dominating....) strangeness aside, fuckin amazing band. mostly german, but they have one or two songs in english.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm well aware of At the Gates, Insomnium, and other melodeath acts though. In fact, I've heard pretty much every subgenre in metal, but something about In Flames' older material really does it for me. I'll still look into your recs...excluding the new In Flames single- I completely lost my faith in them after Clayman.

edit: Ok, I love the first minute of that first Omnium Gatherum song you listed, but I lost interest once the lead guitar came in. I realized that maybe I like In Flames because they lack technical guitarists relative to many other metal bands. Most of their older songs are just simple, catchy melodies thrown together rather than padding for sweeping guitar solos, which I have a distaste for now. At least that's how I see their efforts. Those "simple, catchy melodies" song structures are pretty much what drew me to video game music.

Well I'm going to stop talking crap about metal and share stuff I still enjoy.

Weird mix of black metal, pop, post-rock, and cloying vocals. Enjoyable if you can buy into the whole nostalgia for childhood thing.

Trance-like black metal with really long build ups.

i didnt take to OG as much as first, btu after awhile, i felt the riffs and leads get stuck with me, and so i kept goin back and goin back, and eventually loved it. but youre ABSOLUTELY right, in flames older stuff=godlike. whoracle is my favorite album in particular, jester race following second, then colony.

the newer stuff turned me off at first too, but i really started diggin it when i realized how fluent the evolution to the new sound was (sat down and listened to the discography--and frankly, i was blown away at how simple they made that transition seem).

for the new album, they are working with some guy from AtG, so im thinkin that old gothenburg sound might be more prominent on SOaPF, but i said the same thing for a sense of purpose, and was sorely disappointed. worst album from IF BY FAR, couple noteworthy songs i guess; condemned was good, alias, and the chosen pessimist also. but it doesnt even come close to whoracle and tJR and colony, every damn song was epic and amazing.
