I guess Vincent!
He lives in a coffin in the area where Sephiroth reads books and shit and goes crazy... or enlightened from Sephiroth's own perspective.
His limit breaks contort him into monsters, but his battle skills are heightened (to an extent XD)
Not sure about this, but "looking around" may refer to looking at pictures of the character. One in particular where he is on the rooftops sorta looks like he is preying on somone? I dunno XD
This refers to his theme? |

The logic is spot on for lines 1 and 4. The guess is incorrect.

I'm thinkin Jenova. I don't
FrogmaJoined: Jun 25 2008 |
I'm thinkin Jenova. I don't really know where she resides but enlightened could refer to the ancients or Hojo. Contorted, yeah she's pretty messed up. Heightened, as in those times you fight her she's pretty massive. Looking around the game you find all the tattooed ex-soldiers which could pertain to the 3rd line. Jenova's theme is guitaraliciously awesome.

EDIT: I changed my mind, I'm going to go with the big man himself, Sephiroth. I'm not positive how to fit the last line in which is why I originally went with Hojo, but I'll give it a shot anyway. |

None of those are correct. When I said Nate's logic was spot on for lines 1 and 4, I meant it! Pick up on his trail and you'll get the answer in no time. Since Jit was also correct about line 4, I'll explicitly say, yes, line 4 refers to Vincent's theme. Frogma, line 3 is a bit more literal than you're thinking with regard to evidence of "preying".

Jit, just because Nate's guess about the final answer to the riddle was incorrect, doesn't mean he wasn't right about certain individual lines! Vincent isn't the answer--but line 4 does refer to Vincent's musical theme. That's a piece of the puzzle--not the whole puzzle.

jitJoined: Mar 04 2009 |
Well then the two logical choices would be either Lucrecia or Dr. Hojo but some the riddle doesnt make sense for each Residing in darkness would either be Hojo's Lab or Lucrecia's cave. "Mostly contorted, but sometimes I’m heightened" "If you look around, you can tell I’ve been preying" Though when I appear, the guitarist keeps playing I don't like just throwing out guess after guess so I'm not gonna say either until I fully figure it out. Hell, I could still be completely wrong. |
It's not Lucrecia or Hojo.
musenjiJoined: Feb 02 2010 |
It's not Lucrecia or Hojo. "Preying" is in a very literal sense, not the psychological sense. "Contorted" and "heightened" also refer to the physical, not the psychological.

Maybe it is one of the enemies in the basement? I'm specifically thinking of the bats or the zombie thing. To keep this at just one guess per post, I'll go with... I guess Zombie thing in the basement!
He lives in the basement area where Sephiroth reads books and shit and goes crazy... or enlightened from Sephiroth's own perspective.
He is usually contorted and bent over backwards, yet he often stands up tall (heightened) and straight.
Looking around the basement there are plenty of bones and crap from what zombie thing has been preying on.
While when you battle him, the music switches to the battle theme, he appears in one of the same screens in which you talk to Vincent and hear The Nightmare's Beginning. Also, is the answer actually living/sentient? I have a few ideas about non-living items, which I actually would have gone to before the zombie, but I feel like they are stupid XD. |
Vincent. He's awesome :)

Despite there being multiple games where you can do this, I'm guessing you meant FFVII? If so, Northern Cave? Or did you want specific areas in the Northern Cave? Edit: LINK STRIIIIIIIIFE!!!! XD Double edit: Actually, I think that link strife is correct with the golden saucer... the Tonberry is only there. In the northern cave is Master Tonberry. |

Lol I used to XD... not so much anymore, but I've been thinking of playing through again. And I'm actually pretty confident your answer is correct, as while I was looking for a spirit bug fix the other day, I saw some other bug fixes. One was that the Tonberry can be added back to the Whirlwind maze so that it is not just in the battle arena. I'm hoping that the spirit bug fix won't make it too easy, though. I am thinking it would make for a slightly different experience as armor that wasn't viable before will be so with the fix. Btw, your semi-new avatar is awesome. XD |

Technically it's LS's turn but as LS hasn't said "hey it's my turn!" I assume it's cool? One thought is that "thump thump thump thump" is an event, which would make one worry, but nothing's gone wrong, and even if it did go wrong the thing would end up fine. It kinda makes me think it's a character because characters in games tend to not get permanently injured--for example how Link can fall 200 feet in Ocarina of Time and only lose one heart. The thumping also makes me think of Suplex, Mog's dancing, or maybe an enemy lore. (None of these are guesses, mind you--just thinking out loud. :D)

Riddles are really friggin fun. Verily!
The rules:
1. One riddle at a time. Whoever correctly guesses the riddle (and has the answer confirmed by the riddler) gets to post the next one. They have 48 hours to do so, then the floor is open. (They can also decline to post, and leave the floor open, but c'mon guys, give it a shot.)
2. The riddler gets to decide whether to give hints, and whether to answer questions. (i.e. It's not 20 questions folks.)
Something that has worked very well is for guessers to post the reasoning behind their guesses--which gives the riddler a chance to steer them along, in an organic fashion. And it keeps people from just randomly guessing.
3. Riddles are to be made based on Square Soft games (pre-2003) that were released in America. (The reason for this is to limit the field and keep it relatively accessible to all.)
4. If you are posting a riddle, pick one game to riddle about, and state it in your initial post.
**************************************
So, the first riddle. It's from Final Fantasy VII:
I reside in darkness where evil’s enlightened
Mostly contorted, but sometimes I’m heightened
If you look around, you can tell I’ve been preying
Though when I appear, the guitarist keeps playing
