Wait can we use a character from a video game and make a new theme for them?

No you can't use a "real"

hashel

Location: Liège (Belgium)

No you can't use a "real" character you should creat a new one, or just creat a song, listen to it and creat a character from the song...

For exemple, you compose something cheerfull, you imagine a cheerfull character, hummm maybe a little girl, so you change the instruments with guitar pro or tuxguitar or whatever and some part of your song to make it sounds like a cheerfull little girl's theme ^^

Or if you really want to, you can make, for exemple, a new theme for Kefka and tell me "it's the bad boy of the story, i tried to put his madness and cruelty in my song" but don't tell me you're talking about kefka :p

Did i answer to your question ?

*hand up* my bad, my bad. I'm the one who made it sound like a rule.

I noted in IRC (to several different people, including jit) that all the people before me had waited till the end to listen to all the entries for their respective contests--so I would wait as well, during mine.

But as there's still nothing official, I'd say it's up to Kabuki (the first contest runner) or some kind of general consensus, whether this should be an actual rule, or up to each contest runner to decide for themselves.

P.S. Congrats Hashel on the win! (yours was my favorite too. :D)

And then I realized that the chord progression from Chrono Cross's Another World is the same progression as the chorus from Peace of Mind by Boston, and life was never quite the same.

Hours of MIDI programming in Logic :-) Plus, I played the bass. Here is more info than you probably wanted:

For the flutes, trumpet, oboe, and marimba, I used Garritan Personal Orchestra, with a stereo delay effect and convolution reverb. (I use convolution reverbs as my only reverbs--they're the most flexible, and I have lots of impulses.)

For the drums, I used roland General MIDI with convolution reverb for the weird sounds, and Natural Drum Kit with Halion Player for the regular drums (used the Funk snare, Full kick, 13 hihats, tambourine, cymbals and rides, using the sticks to hit all of them). I put different EQ on each drum and compress them separately, and divide them into three groups for reverb (kick and snare need different kinds of reverb from other stuff in my experience). I kill the mids on the kick and emphasize the snare's fundamental slightly.

Then I froze those tracks (basically it saves the tracks as WAV files so they stop taking up CPU), recorded my active J-bass with DR hi-beams (I recorded it once with fingers, but then I went back and re-did it with a pick), put the bass through a low and high pass filter to box it in (57Hz-4700Hz I think), compression, noise gate, cab sim with an impulse, then a convolution reverb mixed in quietly (bass doesn't need much reverb).

Then I adjust levels, go back over the EQ on all the tracks again, put all of the tracks together on one bus, and put a limiter plugin on all of them, tweak the levels, and bounce the track to MP3.

Hooray!! I am still not so good at this, but I seem to have learned a bit over the years ;-)

Alan's Theme

the name of the guy is Alan, and just like a shakespearian character is a man in an eternal struggle with his condition, he must decide, he must act but he can't do anything because of his uncertainty, that can be seen like a sort of fatal flaw. I tried to put this perturbation and indecision in his theme, that is at the same time sweet and bitter :)

link, i think this is your best so far, love the dynamics, especially like the part that starts at 1:06.
auri, i wish i understood all that :) very character-themey :P
my favorite so far is volcano's. the riff starting at :56 [to about 1:07] reminds me of cannibal corpse.
you deserve this

here's a "bonus" from me: a song i did for Blood Omnicide for the HMCS Bitters, a hidden ship in the original game
it's still an early version, hafta work it to fit the game's atmosphere. figured i'd post it here since i could easily say it's a theme for cap'n dogtooth barbossa or some other pirate i made up ;)

i am working on a piece just for this contest, got a nice start going too!

STORY:

Jake Owl, abandoned when he was a child, never knew his mother and father. He was raised by a man who found him alone in an alleyway. He was trained in his family's martial arts. He raised Jake and taught him what he knew for the purpose of good. The few that know him call him the Owl.

One day, he saw a girl being chased by a bunch of thugs. Cornered in an alleyway, he kills all the mobsters and rescues the girl. Maria Knight, a local singer of a jazz lounge, immediately felt a connection with him. At first, he runs off and thinks nothing of it. But she eventually gets into trouble and he saves her again. He doesn't understand why, but later realizes his father is a mob king trying to kidnap her for ransom money. They eventually fall in love and try to stop his father.

Maria Knight, a beautiful brunette, doesn't have such a beautiful life. She seems happy but deep inside is alone. She was beaten numerous times and even raped by her father. Her mother died in a plane accident. She wanted to travel the world but fell in love with a guy and settled with him. He was cheating on her the whole time and when she found out she nearly commits suicide. She becomes a singer and writes songs that are sometimes troubling. As soon as she meets Jake, she travels with him as an aide and she realized it was fate to be with him.

Jake's theme is very mysterious sounding as his personality. Throw in a bit of hip hop which resembles his confidence. Orchestral sounds for how epic he is and a few owl sounding FX well, for ya know.
Jake Owl

Maria's theme is sad and depressing as her life is. Her theme kind of sounds like a map theme, resembling her desire to travel.
Maria Knight

I guess if I had to choose 1 for the contest it would be Jake, but I think the sadness of Maria's theme evokes more emotion. You never know, I might make more character themes, it's fun to do these things.

Congratulations for your work

Okay I'll try it.

Jal is rather shady character, who never met his parents. He travels with a circus caravan from town to town, making money by playing con games. He does not talk much. In the night, he usually gets terribly drunk and although he is not a typical bad guy, he is not afraid to take part in a pub fight and introduce his knife to other bruisers. He's also particularly good at stealing.

I would say it does. In the same way that learning chords and scales teaches you what notes go together, and give you the tools for song composition, music theory gives you the tools to create a much wider variety of compositions, which ofcoure increases your control on how the piece expresses itself. Just learning about certain rhythm patterns like a waltz tremendously expands what you can compose.

btw, a waltz is really easy to recognise and compose. It's just "Oom Cha Cha" Try listening for it in Kenor's piece.

(also, im by no means an expert, this is just my experience of learing a bit of theory)
