I'm curious as to whether anybody here has ever submitted work to OCRemix. Yea? Nay? What about VGMix?

i was in BEER #4 and #5 back in '03, but that's the extent of my OCRing. haven't even really been around that site much since then, i'm mostly between here and OLR [where i have one song up and one being judged] though i lurk around Remix:ThaSauce and Dwelling of Duels [where my jan2010 entry placed 12th... out of 12... with 0 points...]

I submitted a terrible remix in 2008 and it was deservedly rejected. Eventually I'll submit something again, if I feel I've done a good enough job on something that fits their "not too much, not too little" arrangement requirements.

Wow, xuwawa, I didn't know about those other sites. Thanks! I'm checking them out.

Kabuki, sweet! I'm listening to the source right now, as I never played the game. ...Okay now I'm listening to the remix. Good stuff. The traveling bass line actually reminds me of the Startropics end music. :D

The reason I brought this all up is that I have a piece I'm considering submitting, solo acoustic guitar. It has some good musical ideas, but I have several concerns about it being "OCR" material.

The first and biggest is production value, as I have a cheapie mic that tends to pick up fuzz. Kabuki, what's your mic/recording/mixing setup, if I may ask? Did you add a touch of reverb?

And then I realized that the chord progression from Chrono Cross's Another World is the same progression as the chorus from Peace of Mind by Boston, and life was never quite the same.

computer mic and acid music studio I bought like 12 years ago XD Yeah I added reverb. They are pretty picky about what they accept these days. I've had my arrangement of Besaid Island and Dk in Love both rejected. Don't get too crazy with your arrangement.

Don't get too crazy as in don't stray too far from the source? Or don't get too crazy as in don't get my hopes up and put all this effort into it only to be rejected?

I sure hope you mean the former! Cause it's still a worthwhile endeavor to create the thing, even if they turn it down. :D

Anyway I'm thinking of sending a rough draft to one of the judges and asking if it would even qualify...it might break the "medleys have to sound like one song" rule...it's borderline in my mind.

Don't stray too far from the source, they are pretty strict about that.

Yeah, but you can't be too close to the source either.

Yeah I think it has to be like 50% source or something. I know they actually COUNTED SECONDS in my While San d'Oria Sleeps arrangement to be sure I was over the 50% mark. A bit silly but it does keep the level of incoming arrangements quite high.

What, my crap submission from 2008? Sure!

http://mp3.auriplane.net/blaster5.mp3

Yeegh. Guitars sound horrible, bass is super muffled, and it's not the right amount of arrangement for OCR anyway. Drums are boring. The random panning is silly. I still love the original song, though, and I think it's a lot of fun playing, so someday I'll try to make a better version of that tune :-)

Now, I haven't listened to it yet, but note that when Auriplane says something bad about her own work, what you have to do is assign her estimate a value from 1-10, and then add 5.

For example, for the Christmas contest she wrote the "world's worst song", trashed that one, and eventually submitted one that was "slightly less crappy". She therefore won the competition, with a song that she deemed slightly less crappy than the worst song in the world.

:D:D:D

Actually, in this case I have a panel of judges to back me up. Just ask OCR. ;-)

Posting here for the record: I think you're objective in your analysis--just hard on yourself in the final evaluation stage (or, just really modest). It's a combination of poking fun at that tendency and complimenting your skills. Anyway, being one's own hardest critic drives us forward. :D
