What I'm saying is skill/talent and connections will probably hold more weight than a music related degree. If Plan A (being hired as a composer) fails, what do you turn to with a music theory degree?

you should probably start

you should probably start learning music theory like right now the composer to megaman battle network 4 has a jazz piano degree and that music is badass |
Like Jacob said, you must

Like Jacob said, you must learn the theory (seriously) and getting interested in all kind of musique (classical, metal, ethnic, jazz, electro...) And i think playing piano (or synth) is a good thing to comopose VG music. I'd like to compose some OST music (for myself not for VG companys ^^), even if i'm in a Stoner Rock band ^^' i already composed (just the base, it must be improve) 3 songs. - Red Sand's Castle (arabian style music with a little crescendo with metal guitars) I really enjoy trying to compose that kind of music but i have problems to finish them, because my theory is really poor =/

I am also working towards being a games composer. In fact, I dropped out of my law degree in order to do the music A Level (the qualification between degree and comprehensive/high school) I am on currently. I have been also been entered for a grade 5 theory exam in the summer, with the possibility of doing a higher grade. Hopefully with these qualifications, alongside the three A Levels I already possess, I will be able to do a degree in music. My year spent arranging and composing songs for solo guitar has done wonders for my skills at understanding and creating music, which still have a long way to go before I am nearly at the standard of professional composers. However, even with a 1st music degree and grade 8 in music theory my chances of becoming a successful video game composer are slim (ambition and overconfidence run in the family :D). Saying that I strongly believe that this is a good direction to take in life. If you want to be a game composer I have a few suggestions: learn EVERYTHING about the creation of music, get a reputation as a good musician, learn a polyphonic instrument to the extent that you can play pieces of music on it (guitars and pianos are great tools for composing), familiarise yourself with music software and getting some relevant qualifications won't hurt either. Good luck!

Now there are some realistic replies. I figured Music Theory was the big one to hit and, thanks for the note on MMMBN 4's composer Jacob, that's pretty cool to know. I'll be taking courses from Berklee this year and I just can't decide if I want to take their guitar courses, or music theory courses. |
dude there are heaps easier

Hey everyone I was hoping someone around here would know what degree's are favored by companies looking for a composer for their soundtrack to a video game. Everyone here knows what Nobuo Uematsu does of course, that's the kind of job I'm talking about. Ironically I just answered my own question, obviously I can just look him up and find what degrees he has. So let's talk about studying to be a composer on this thread, anyway. Anyone interested in doing this for a living?
Edit: Apparently Uematsu graduated from Kanagawa University, but not with a music degree. So what degree do you guys think is favored for his position by most companies? My best assumption is a major in Music Theory but I'm not sure yet.
