I really like this

I really like this arrangement. Definitely just became my next challenge.

So amazing!

Oh man I've always loved this song! I can't believe you can play this so smoothly dude, there are some serious positions and stretches going on to maintain the melody. Outstanding tab man, really.

I love this tab!

Too bad my hands are too small for some of the stretches :(

My hands are quite small too!

My hands are quite small too! Just keep working on it.

Your hands are gargantuan!

Your hands are gargantuan! You have to stop claiming this. Just because they may be small for your height, does not mean they are actually small. It's a question of their absolute size.

You think my hands are giant too :-(

Not giant, though we did

Not giant, though we did establish that they are at least larger than mine. But I look at Bhael's in comparison to the fretboard and I go O_O. (same scale fretboard I use...maybe even larger, who knows. Yo Bhael, you got a 650 or a 665?)

I would like to see a measurement of his hands, 1. out of curiosity, and 2. because:

Look, it's awesome and noble to encourage people to try hard in spite of physical limitations, especially if those limitations are actually largely mental. But if they are actually physical, it IS possible to lead someone into doing something that is harmful for them.

From watching both of your

From watching both of your videos, I assure you guys that my hands are smaller than both yours and bhaels!

I just realized that no matter how many replies this conversation has, kara will have the last word. Maybe by keeping talking, we can confuse people as to where he actually made his comment relative to the others. Or, if we keep making our comments progressively weirder, people could always assume he just said it after the last comment.

PS I am ruining all these wonderful possibilities by making it clear that at THIS point, he'd already posted.

PS Lemon

PS Lemon, do you have a retarded pinky too? Pic related, this is me flexing fingers loosely. I am putting absolutely no effort into bending my pinky like that. That is what it does naturally, which makes some stretch chords pretty hilarious.

P1020334.JPG

how do you flex your fingers

how do you flex your fingers loosely? not trying to sound like a smart ass, I just want to know what you mean so I can take a similar picture to compare, because to be honest, I see nothing retarded about your pinky at all! my hand looks similar to that when I just let my fingers hang limp in that position

He meant what you're doing.

He meant what you're doing. I confirmed it via private correspondence and have taken it upon myself to update you on the matter, since his response to this thread has been less than forthcoming!

WELL ACCORDING TO THIS

WELL ACCORDING TO THIS ARTICLE MY HANDS ARE HETEROSEXUAL AS FUCK

My ring finger actually comes

My ring finger actually comes out less far than my index...which is not normal for a guy.

(The reason I say "comes out less far" rather than "is shorter" is cause technically they're about the same length, but because of the slant of the palm, blah blah blah)

PS we don't all respond

PS we don't all respond faster to Gametabs than we do to IM, like Auri. PPS I have money on a table, I'm paying more attention to that. Except now I'm not, but I should be.

In regards to Musenji: I think I remember you saying something about playing piano. What's the largest stretch you can make there? (7th, Octave?) I think its a better way to measure your hands.

Ouch, my hands...

5

I'm pretty sure my fingering is off by a mile... Had to type all of this with my right hand.

What do you mean off by a

What do you mean off by a mile? Do you mean you just can't finger it because your hands aren't big enough, but you tried anyway, and now your left hand hurts like a bitch?

If that's the case, don't believe the hype. Your hand really is too small. The tabber's hands are pretty large, and he has yet to prove otherwise. :p Just move on to a piece that your left hand can handle.

Oookay I accept that the

Oookay I accept that the stretches in this tab are impossible for some people regardless of flexibility. Nevertheless my hands aren't huge, and I had to force them to adapt to big stretches like 3-8. Anyway when I eventually find a ruler I'll settle this dispute once and for all :P

Bhael said when I eventually

Bhael said

when I eventually find a ruler

I'm pretty sure England is *made out of* rulers. And tea.

But god damn if this is not the coolest site I've ever seen!

http://www.sylens.net/ruler/index_en.html

I don't really have a beef anymore, but any time it pops up that someone has trouble with their left hand hurting, on your tab or anyone's, I will keep telling them to take care of themselves and not try to do stretches that are not healthy for them!

I still look forward to any time you post a recording cause I know it will be ace! I should post sometime too...

Ah ha! The distance from the

Ah ha! The distance from the bottom of my palm to the top of my middle finger is 19cm, while the distance I can stretch from my little finger to index is 14.5cm. Yourself?

And yeah man your recordings are great also.

I would say 17.5 and 13.5-14.

I would say 17.5 and 13.5-14. Though I just realized that measuring palm facing away toward a screen vs palm facing toward oneself pressed directly against the ruler might get different results, one way or the other. We'll NEVER KNOW FOR SURE lol

Okay so. I finally tried

5

Okay so. I finally tried this.

Bhael, I have to say this is a pretty gorgeous arrangement. I absolutely loved the sounds that were coming from the guitar, and the fingering is actually very intuitive to me for the most part--it's just much too painful. After one playthrough my left hand was yelling at me to stop.

I'm going to give it a try on my 606mm guitar when I have the chance. If it is more agreeable on that one, I may just work it up and post!

Auriplane pointed out to me

Auriplane pointed out to me that I could just capo on 2 instead of 1, and it would be similar to playing open on a 606, so I tried it and it does hurt less. Still hurts though. :p

[edit] but assuming I'd capo on the 606, then I should really capo on 3. I just tried capoing on 3, and it's a lot more comfortable, aside from barring 8 which is really barring 11 and pretty much pointless on a non-cutaway classical. Maybe I will learn this on electric and capo on 3 for that.

Cool! Looking forward to the

Cool! Looking forward to the recording.

I'm 6'3" and this is about as

5

I'm 6'3" and this is about as far as I can stretch and still hear each note completely cleanly:

--12--
------
------
------
------
--5---

I think this is a great way to show a comparison to hand size, everyone go from fret 12 and reach back.

I have to admit though, I wasn't always able to make this stretch, I was a music major for almost 2 years and I've been a guitar teacher for 12 years. I play the hardest songs I know of for classical guitar. Not to toot my own horn, just showing you that with hard work you can get your stretch to be pretty awesome.

People have always said to me "yeah, but your hands are huge!" My wife has said the same thing, but when I hold my hands up to hers to compare palm-to-palm, her palm to tip of fingers length is the same as mine (she's 6 feet tall). I told her the same thing, play a lot, stretch a lot, get your muscles used to doing that and you'll stretch farther than 3 frets.

I've shown her small people that are amazing at guitar, like Andy McKee, I don't know how tall he is, but he seems really short.

https://fanart.tv/fanart/music/39d6c679-b41c-470c-a755-4566bde24063/arti...

That's also the largest

That's also the largest interval I can play comfortably. I can technically do 4 to 12, but it's not what I'd call comfortable, nor is it something I'd be able to do in the middle of a song …

I'm about four inches shorter than you, but I have long fingers.

I think stretching past three frets might have more to do with technique (the angle of your hand and so on) than working on muscles or anything like that, though. I think anyone can do it.

Best I can do is 7----12.

Best I can do is 7----12. Maybe after years of training I could make it 6.

Nobody has to have huge hands to be good at guitar. However there will always be limitations on a person with smaller hands.

What are the hardest songs you know of for classical guitar? Do you know of this site?

http://www.guitarburst.com/

I can't play the Allegro Solemne from La Catedral, but if I trained obsessively enough I could see myself playing it within a year. ...It only has a rating of 14 (out of 20). :p Sor's Variations on a Theme of Mozart gets a 17. Asturias is 15.

Asturias (Leyenda) was a song

Asturias (Leyenda) was a song I played to try for a full ride scholarship to to BYU back when I was just getting out of high school (in 2004). I got the scholarship but I was denied into the school, so the scholarship went to the next runner up.

Sor's Variations on a Theme of Mozart is a song I studied at about the same time, I performed it at one of my high school's talent shows. It's a FANTASTIC song for people to learn classical technique, even if you have to play it slowly. There are so many techniques spread throughout it. I freakin love that song!

Good, so nothing's stopping

Good, so nothing's stopping you (okay, okay, "time", I understand but this will take you like 15 minutes)! Please make an old man happy.

First, listen to this, let it repeat a few times. Get it into your soul.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFIDdl_OIgg

Then, look at this tab, it's my best arrangement, which nobody cares about because lol NES RPG sequel, combined with legit difficulty:

http://www.gametabs.net/dragon-quest-iv/unknown-castle

Listen to the midi, it's just the guitar arrangement. Yeah it's super slow.

And I'll try any tab of yours that you want me to try out, from a game I haven't played. (Since I've tried all the ones from games I *have* played.)

I have no idea why I missed

I have no idea why I missed this comment! I'm listening to the youtube link right now

I usually go to

I usually go to http://www.classtab.org/ for my classical guitar music. It's a really basic web site, but it has almost every piece of classical guitar music I could ever dream of in tablature form.

I just played through

I just played through http://www.classtab.org/barrios_la_catedral_3_allegro.txt

I've heard John Williams and a few others play it. I'm glad to finally put 2 and 2 together and have the sheet music for it! It's a great song! I'm surprised how well I played it the first time through though.

Maybe if I get some more time I'll start recording myself with some of the hard stuff from this site and some other classical songs. I did this one a while back if you didn't hear it:

http://www.gametabs.net/recording/thedstring/blue-fields

I was sight reading it, so there are a few mistakes. I didn't have it memorized yet.

I think you just wanna plaster it all over. :D

6-12 is my limit. I can

6-12 is my limit. I can nearly sound a clean 5-12 but the thumb comes in handy for those kind of stretches :).

Andy Mckee isn't a great example - small hands might be the reason why he plays nearly everything in altered tunings!

I kinda doubt an altered

I kinda doubt an altered tuning would be used to make up for a stretch or two in a song--it'd just screw a bunch of other fingerings up, right?

I think it's the overhand hammer-happy-slappy style that seems to not require stretching very much.

It's more that the chordal

It's more that the chordal patterns which lead to big stretches in standard tuning tend not to occur within altered tuning pieces. I wasn't suggesting pieces composed in standard tuning can be made easier by transposing into a different one, but rather that music composed within altered tunings tends to put emphasis on the most accessible notes. Phrased differently, altered tunings provide a comfortable playing environment for diatonic composition. I'd also say the style of music popularised by altered tunings tends not to have big register transfers!

Incidentally, candyrat music

Ah, yeah! Makes sense.

Incidentally, candyrat music is also *usually* less musically interesting in my opinion. :p

Usually is the word :) It

Usually is the word :) It certainly has gone downhill recently, but there's still the odd gem: http://youtu.be/yRobnYDZ9N4 But yeah, altered tunings are often a convenient excuse to create music with no substance
